Title: A message for those hangers-on
Post by: BlackberryClock on February 02, 2019, 04:07:37 AM
Hello my dudes! I was just burning the midnight oil, and I ended up back on here. I'm installing Unbuntu on an old machine, and I was messing around in my archives. I found my old Flash files (that I can't even open now). That made me a little nostalgic.

I was just reminiscing a bit. It's pretty crazy that most of us were teens when we joined, and now we're mostly in our 30s. Time keeps on moving forward and relentlessly so. Man, how old would Bio be at this point?

I was searching the forums a bit and saw MarijaunaClock posted a few years ago. Some of you may remember that I was particularly active on the politics board and for a good chunk of time moderated it. MJ and I argued a lot as he was a left/liberal and I was a borderline-religious, conservative-leaning libertarian. How times have changed. I'm basically a leftist now. Sorry if I said anything crappy to people back then, though I think I was mostly civil.

I saw DrunkMagiKoopa is dril. WTF. That is amazing. I can get how the CC/NG planted a seed for the absurdist comedy that goes over well these days. And congrats on those who kept the dream going and are working in graphics/coding/animation. I just looked at some of Munglai's new stuff, and it's amazing. I wish I knew what some of the other folks ended up doing (what does Orange do for a living? What is Strange doing?).

Sometimes I think back to all of the time I spent on the forums and all of the time I spent tinkering in Flash. What was it all for? I don't keep in contact with anyone from the CC. But I have used the programming, artistic, and graphic-design skills I acquired. That's pretty cool.

I'm living in Baltimore (hit me up) for a few more months until I move to an Indian reservation (hours from any major city) to do work there.

I hope you are all doing well and got something out of your time with the CC like I did.

Best,

Funny to see this post here. Randomly was just thinking about NewGrounds and my old internet days. I was 14-15 years old when I stumbled across ClockCrew. I'm now 31. I'm wondering at this moment in time if anyone still here remembers me? Who all is still around?

I was 12 years old when I signed up on this site, I am now 24. That’s half my life come August I’ll have been posting here. I don’t know if I’ve gleaned anything particularly meaningful from the forums explicitly in that time but this place and you guys are so engrained into me at this point I’d be lost if it up and vanished.

Hey, good memory. Actually the avatar was a character from a OrangeClock movie--that I believe was deleted--called Mr. Handcock. I think it was a teacher he had named Mr. Hancock, so the character had a penis for a hand. I just ran with it.

I found this old signature pic that used the different avatars I used:

Maybe I'll change it back.

Cool. I go to Texas at least once a year for family stuff. Hello!

I'm hoping my old laptop can be like a distraction-free word processor and not be so slow with Ubuntu. We'll see how it goes.

Yeah, 12 is crazy young to be in the CC. Whether we can tell it or not, our life experiences color our current existence. Without it, you wouldn't be who you are now.

This inspired me to look into my archives. I don't really delete anything, and I have not had a major data loss recently. I found a lot of CC stuff in there going back to 2002.

There's old swf's from various original clocks that were blammed, screen caps from notable events and CC drama, lots of audio files (CC radio ads, CC-related rapping, various voice acting), and a few chat logs among other things.

Maybe some day I will make a thread and post some.

Did someone ever archive the CC wiki?

I've been meaning to write software to automatically fetch "deleted" cartoons from the latest copyrighted media purge, but I've been a lazy asshole and haven't even started. Was gonna host it on Clocktopia.net if you want to throw those SWFs my way, with the author names at least.

When I talk to clocks after a long time, sometimes they tell me that I was mean to them in the past or that I just had a bad attitude. I hope that wasn't the case with you. If so, ten thousand apologies, and nothing but love.

<3
Heh, you know, not seeing people's faces or interacting with them in person really limits your ability to truly assess their personality. Even still, we get a decently developed ideas of what people are like based on how they act on the forum over years.

For CC members, we could make a two-axis plot with nice-mean on the horizontal and stable-erratic on the vertical. Erratic being the kind of high-output spammy type consistent with classic Clock aesthetic. Some clocks I found incredible nice and stable (Bio, Strange, FU, oskoo, Leek) others mean and stable (Onion, SpriteRemix, some of the seniors), and others erratic and mean (Grey, Frogbag lol).  From my recollection, I think you would be a neutral to slight nice of center on the horizontal and erratic on the vertical.

Based on my experience here, the concept of trolling revolves around misrepresenting oneself to get a rise out of people. That entire notion originated on NG and CC, didn't it? And has anyone found this to be somewhat of a superpower in situations where people have tried to troll you? Sorry, going off on a tangent here.
the term dates back all the way to usenet. it comes from the word "trawling". fishing for a reaction so to speak. and even before that people have been "trawling" for extreme reactions from people for their own amusement since the dawn of human culture. the clock crew did however invent the concept of art itself. nobody even understood how to draw a dick in the sand before B came around. strawberryclock brought creativity to humanity as prometheus brought us fire.

It's really awesome going through and reading these posts. It's these quiet, lonely nights that come up from time to time which draw me back in here.. like a lot of folks said, I think CC was just that panacea to the misery that adolescence and life can throw at you. Even the people who were assholes here are people who I remember fondly, and tbh? While I can't relate to a lot of the content I made or consumed, and can't say I'm near the same person as I was before, I'm glad to have known all of you the way I did.

I just recovered one of my accounts on Reddit and had forgotten that I was mod of /r/theclockcrew (it's more dead there than here btw) and wandered back over here.

Quote from: BlackberryClock on February 02, 2019, 04:07:37 AMI saw DrunkMagiKoopa is dril. WTF. That is amazing.

I'm not sure if this is just as mind blowing but does everyone know that videogamedunkey (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsvn_Po0SmunchJYOWpOxMg) is meatwadsprite? What surprised me even more is his appearance. I met him while working PAX and he is not what I had imagined... He's such a soft spoken dude!

There are other little discoveries I've made here and there over the years but I can't recall them at the moment. I do know that a lot of early NG peeps have gone on to be successful in various corners of the internet and the animation and gaming industry. I find it a little humbling knowing that we all sort of have the same online roots.

When I joined the CC in 2006, I tried to make myself known within the community. Not to dive into any personal details, but the CC was all I had at the time (this seems to have been a theme with some of our members). I craved acceptance. There were plenty of reasons behind this and I'm sure some of us can relate. It brought me a lot of happiness at a time when I needed it the most. There were members I probably should not have associated myself with (you know you are), but it was still such an excellent learning experience.

I'm about to turn 28 now and the CC has shaped who I am in countless aspects. I've done my best to grow out of all the negative traits that I attributed to my experience here, but the sense of humor is still there. Random but sort of related : has anyone noticed that the word trolling has completely lost its original meaning? Based on my experience here, the concept of trolling revolves around misrepresenting oneself to get a rise out of people. That entire notion originated on NG and CC, didn't it? And has anyone found this to be somewhat of a superpower in situations where people have tried to troll you? Sorry, going off on a tangent here.

I'm not really making any sort of a point with what I'm saying. I forgot to mention that I've met some incredible people thanks to this community. You guys know you are as well. :)

And I'm not fucking Mexican, fuck off

That's actually pretty funny. Good idea PHANTOMCATCLOCK.

Also "we are all just prisoners here, of our own device" is a great line in Clock Crew context. Too bad nothing was done with it in favor of another goddamn stabbing.

Interesting. I have a couple movies removed, presumably due to music copyright. Is there a way to recover movies that were blammed back in the day?

I had a quiet conspiracy theory that you and Pop-Tart were the same person because Pop started off fiddling with 3D models before switching to his now well established 2D pastel focused look and it seemed like you stopped posting around the time he showed up and like I've never seen the two of you in the same room together so

welcome back
Just because his name contains the word chocolate doesn't necessarily mean he's a black guy, that's racist.

Are you though? Are you a black guy?

Oh hey I'm here

Only on these evenings where I find myself with absolutely nothing to do or anyone to talk to do I remember this place is still here.

I'm pretty sure everyone was horrible to each other at some point back in the day. I remember some of you (myself included) having various percieved shifts in persona, both personally towards me, and publically. It was probably all nonsense but as I kid I loved the drama of it all. So desperately did I want to be accepted by those of you I thought were cool.

Anyway I'm we're all adults now so just the relentless boot of capitalism to contend with!

I lost all of my files from 2002-2017 last year, that was a massive bummer.

It's pure love, our horribleness.

If you have Flashes that were uploaded to NewGrounds but got removed from the copyright purge, you can still get them back. Images and suchâ€"no such luck. I know there were some artists who drew both of us in the same big mass post image and I have them saved because, you know, it has me in it. Could swooce through that folder, but I wouldn't have any of your forum sigs/flashes SORRY, MY MAN.

Was just playing Clock Tournament again tonight, was like, "I should probably update this, maybe add some newer clocks in, fix a few things, make it widescreen, replace that damn Hans Zimmer song with a legal song, etc", and made me think to come back on the forums and saw this thread.

I'm almost 40 now. I don't remember how old I was when I first started participating, but Clock Legends is now 16 years old now, so I was in my early 20s. I bought a house in the Chicago suburbs last year. I have two dogs now, and I'm getting married in a few months.

I worked in the video game industry for a short while. Most notably for Yuke's, who did the WWE Smackdown vs Raw games and the first UFC games, although I worked for their short-lived American offshoot, so I didn't work on those games. I worked on a game with Yuke's Japan during their downtime between WWE games called Double D Dodgeball that came out on Xbox Live Arcade and got a bad reception (they had very little time to make the game, and we charged too much for it), then I worked on a Playstation Portable card tactics game you can still buy off Amazon called Neverland Card Battles, developed by Idea Factory, then we worked together with High Voltage Software to make Evasive Space for Wiiware, and with a developer called Beeworks for a puzzle game called NEVES Plus, and then by that point the games weren't selling well enough to keep the company going. We had a rhythm game in the works called Beat Runner for Wiiware but that got cancelled.

I also worked on a couple of mobile games for a failed startup, which I can only play on my old iPad Mini now (shame too, one of the two games is really good), and then worked at Game Refuge for awhile with two legends in the game industry, who made a bunch of classics for Midway back in the day, including Rampage, Mortal Kombat 2, and NBA Jam. I worked on a free to play facebook/mobile game during that time for a client of theirs, and the game never ended up doing that well, mostly thanks to the client being nuts and changing everything about the game every month.

I currently work for a major corporation heading up the phone systems for several call centers that run health surveys and other campaigns for major health insurance clients. You most likely have health insurance through one of them (we do something for most of them). It sounds more prestigious than it is. I still get paid the same as when I started as a senior engineer, and while our department is doing okay, our parent corporation has been doing awful (40% drop in stock after the most recent earnings meeting, yay), so bad the CEO is resigning, and they've been reducing pay and benefits for years. I need to escape but I feel directionless on where to go and what to do next, and while it's a stressful job I do work from home right now, which is nice.

I'd love to work in the video game industry again, but the whole industry seems to be a shit show of abuse right now. I'm working on some video games in what limited spare time I have instead. I kind of miss collaborating with other people on games, back in the days of Flash. That was fun.

I am trying to revive Proximity again. I found out last Christmas that my old XNA code for Proximity 2 (that I released on the Xbox 360 awhile back) actually transferred really easily to Monogame and I had a mostly working version after a single night of work. I've started working on an update I hope to get out sometime next year, with some upgrades and new features. It's come along pretty well so far, although I keep getting distracted by other crap going on in my life. Monogame supports a ton of platforms so I'm hoping to eventually get it onto a bunch of consoles and make an official desktop version, finally.

Also started getting into board game design, and I'm pretty active in those circles, at least in the Midwestern region. I go to a lot of Protospiels and try to go to Origins and Gen Con most years. I've playtested several major board games, and been credited on a few. I signed my first game with a publisher and it should be coming out late this year or early next year. I've got three more pretty solid designs that I'm going to try to sign this year, if possible. If you make it out to any board game conventions, let me know and if I'm going I'd be happy to meet up, show you what I'm working on if you're interested, or just shoot the shit.

I might finish up a book I've been writing forever in the next year or two. I might just self-publish it, since I'm already interacting a bunch with publishers in board games. I don't think I can do it for two mediums at the same time. Plus it sounds like publishing ain't what it used to be anymore in books, unless you're writing bestseller material. It's a silly novel. You guys might enjoy giving it a read.

I'm not up on any clock stuff anymore, and haven't really been paying attention for at least the past five years or so. What have I missed?

We should have done a third one too, but none of us can count to three.
