Quote from: RibsClock;1929081Well that's actually not true...

It most certainly is, considering that atheism doesn't have any sacred laws. It's not a religion, it doesn't have anything but disbelief in deities.

Quote from: RibsClock;1929188Nonsense. There have been plenty of times where state-sponsored atheism went hand-in-hand with dogmatically rigid party ideology, as well as obsessive cults of personality indistinguishable from the things you condemn in religion. All the people carrying around the little red books? The Lenin Mausoleum? The Juche ideal with its Eternal President of the Republic, the Great Leader Kim Il Sung and his dynasty of repeatedly beatified linear male descendents? The League of the Militant Godless?

If you're going to get on Muslims for the evils of state-sponsored Islam then is it not fair to get on Atheists for the evils of state-sponsored Atheism?

State-sponsored Islam is the Islamic ideal of a good society. State-sponsored atheism (note the lack of capitalization) has nothing to do with anything inherent to atheism. Lack of belief in a deity doesn't inherently carry with it some impetus to spread your disbelief. There's no atheist scripture demanding the conversion of the world. There's no atheist scripture at all. Do you get the difference yet?

Islam isn't just a word denoting one specific belief, it's a collection of teachings. A collection of misogynistic teachings that often send the message that life is not only cheap but far inferior to death, and that honor and religious tradition are everything. In these respects it's quite a lot like a number of other religions. That's the key point, it's a religion. It has some meat to it, some definite things to say in addition to the various different elaborations and interpretations people might lean toward. It's not just some neutral position from which anyone calling themselves a Muslim is alienated, it's an authoritarian dogma with certain specific requirements.

Atheism, again, is none of these things. It is not a proper noun, it only gets a big "A" when it's at the front of a sentence. There is no dogma to atheism, no blasphemy. There are no behavioral requirements. The sole defining factor of atheism is lack of belief in any gods. Now if you'd like to expand our horizons to anti-theism we can get the ball rolling a bit, but it's still not a proper noun and it still doesn't come with any sort of prescriptivist interpretation of what one should do with their belief that theistic religion is not only incorrect but maladaptive. For some the answer might be discourse, for others it might be taking over the country and forcibly suppressing all religion. Both of these techniques, though, as well as the belief that religion is false and negative, are a matter of personal discovery and decision. You might read a thing or two written by an atheist along the way but there's no Official Atheist Handbook, not even one that we can't agree on the implications of.

I'm sorry, did this stop being a relevant topic? I'm pretty sure honor killings and state-sponsored Islam are still things.
