Have you ever opened your own forum?
« on: July 02, 2019, 03:37:10 PM »
I opened my own forum about a year ago, which promptly died about a month later. It was for talking about Mario games, whether it be dumb continuity bullshit, fan games, whatever. I really liked it, but I can kinda see that its hard for a forum to open in this day and age. I might try bring it back though.
in the year of our lord 2019

funny how the www came about as this self publishing thing that didn't initially have anything to do with two way communication

"why would I let other people write on my WebPage? if they have something to say to me they can email me or we can duke it out on Usenet!!"

then later it was all like, the mailing list messages did become web pages, that were discoverable in directories and search engines and w/e

but still, like, maybe it's just we didn't have the technology or we didn't have it at scale, but we were sooo far into this thing before the "social media" model occurred to anyone, let alone "centralized social media"

forums were all
"how do I beat water temple God damn. oh here's a website someone made about zeldo that has a page containing some of the information I want. God I wish I could talk to other people who played this game"
"howdy stranger, you want to talk?? on the world wide web?? that's awful strange, but Buddy's put up a talkin' shed out back"
"WELCOME TO BUDDY'S TALKIN' SHED - OFFICIAL ZELDO FAN FORUM"

cuz like, what better place to find the people you want to talk to than the forum attached to the website with content you like? and then of course search engines be indexing forum content so you can just Google a question that someone asked a decade ago and there it is, answered for posterity ok but unca vcrclock's point is forums were like this symbiotic outgrowth of non-social, primarily content-oriented websites

in the modern world of today there is no better place to shoot the shit than centralized shit-shooters NOBODY ELSE can offer you such stability and potential connections

as long as content is searchable, forums are an incredibly valuable resource as long as the community therein engaged is made up of people who are bringing hot information to the table. unfortunately I feel like these days there's probably a lot of valuable information hidden behind Facebook loginwalls because people are KNOWLEDGE SHARING and COLLABORATING IN CENTRALIZED SHIT-SHOOTERS

excuse my popsting but the more I feel like my long ass post is e/n, the less I care about how it reads

yes

like 15 years ago

it was alright, persisted in limbo for a decade until invisionfree collapsed

forums are basically dead though, a casualty of the mass-homogenization of the internet and collectivization into mass social media giants instead of more splintered special interests communities, basically what VCR was saying

it's really hard to get people back on that path because nobody really wants to manage 20 different accounts for their mario spinoff fetishes

discord serves much of the same purpose but more hidden to conceal the vast amounts of shitty furry anime porn which 100% of the time only serve to drive away the less degenerate members of a community and only leave the diaper rape fags or w/e

i also fucking hate the new culture of PLZ LIKE & SUBSCRIBE & SUPPORT MY PATREON TO GET ACCESS TO MY SEKRIT PORNO DISCORD, GOYIM which is prevalent almost everywhere you go
