Ten years since the dissolution of the original 3D Realms team, I wonder who will secure the rights to Duke when this ordeal results in Gearbox going belly up?

This is so utterly adorable AND one of my favorite ATHF episodes.

I farted in Chesterfield, Missouri
I've been farty all morning it's your fault isnt it? you and your god damn internet fartomancy.

Apparently Randy Pitchford is being sued by lifelong friend and former co-executive of Gearbox software for embezzlement, fraud, and shady business practices. In said lawsuit, it is alleged that Mr.Pitchford is a purveyor of underaged pornography and hosts parties with his wife wherein sexual misconduct against minors is enacted.

maybe now the old 2001 duke nukem forever build can get leaked now that randy cant keep it under lock and key. that shit looked like a lot of fun. somehow, I'm not surprised by the child molestation party thing.

Supposedly the issue with releasing the older builds of Duke Nukem Forever is that 2k still holds distribution rights. Pitchford said he had recently struck a deal with them for some kind of commercial license for a compiled release. He had previously talked about re-re-re-re-releasing Duke 3D with the third party expansions (Life's a Beach, Duke it out in DC, Nuclear Winter), so we were left to wonder if he meant some kind of all encompassing Duke Nukem package. Doesn't look like we'll be seeing that any time soon.

I haven't played the Resident Evil 2 remake demo yet, and I was a little unsure of whether they were gonna do things right. But now I know they kept the greatest video game protagonist in history in the game and I am now absolutely sure it will be wonderful

the original soundtrack being day 1 dlc is still utter bullshit but I can forgive that if tofu is in the base game.

current ones I have no idea. Recently I've been watching Mr Show and it's pretty alright. Some episodes bored me but there's a lot of good in there.

I really like the idea of cosmic horror, but once I'm actually reading it, I often find it boring, clunky, disappointing. It's an itch I can't adequately scratch.

The Mist is a damn fine novella and the movie adaption is  good too, dont watch the tv series. Mentioned Bloodborne already but it's a dark souls kind of game that starts out as typical victorian horror with werewolves or something the cosmic horror stuff creeps in gradually till you're fighting tentacle people and making contact with an interdimensional brain via geometry.  call of cthulhu dark corners of the earth might need a patch or use of savestates to get through it's glitches but it's a damn fine survival horror experience. eternal darkness sanity's requiem is in the same vein but more forgiving and less glitchy. also it's a gamecube game so emulating it is pretty easy.  amnesia the dark descent and it's predecessor penumbra both do the cosmic horror thing but the threats are often more grounded and less world ending.  The Thing is kind of cosmic horror I guess? Technically? but less supernatural and more scientific. It's still an unknowable alien force that threatens the very concept of humanity. If you somehow haven't seen that movie watch it. I would have recommended more books but all I've read in this genre is lovecraft and the mist for the most part.

tangential, but my favorite Lovecraft story is The Outsider, which is also the least cosmic horror-y of his stuff that I’ve read

it’s about a boy who lives in a dilapidated castle at the bottom of a massive, cavernous pit, reading books and dreaming of escape
one day the isolation gets to be too much and he decides to risk climbing out the of the pit by scaling the highest tower of the crumbling castle
and it takes a long time and he nearly dies, but he does. DISHY POSSUM
so he gets out, and he hears people
so he heads toward them, and it’s a beautiful, lavish party
but just as he enters, the party is suddenly wrecked by a horrible monster that he can’t see
the people flee in terror, and as the room empties he at last sees the source of the commotion: a grotesque shambling mockery of the human form standing in th-whoops wait that’s a mirror, shit. it was really dark down there and he just saw humans in his books and just assumed he looked like that too
and then
he’s like
“yesssssss dUDE FUCK YES. YES!!”
and there’s a huge paragraph describing how now he flies around at night with his “mocking and friendly” new ghoul pals and plays all day in hidden catacombs and forgotten valleys only rising to terrorize the surface in the moonlight because being a monster fucking rules
and that’s it that’s the end of the story

I love it so much
partly because that is exactly how I would have reacted if I got Innsmouth’d when I was a kid (or a young man (or now tbh))
but also because it’s so the opposite of all of his other conclusions, this fear and otherworldly terror of everyone and everything instead becomes “what if I’m the monsterous invader? hm that would be... pretty sweet.”

Yeah, The Outsider is pretty great. My favorite is The Shadow over Innsmouth. Lovecraft gets a lot of shit for his stilted writing (and sometimes rightly so), but the man knew how to evoke a certain mood. Innsmouth really comes alive for me: the salty air, the moldy wood of the houses, the summer haze over this dilapidated seaside town. I can see those fishmonsters dancing on the reef, out in the distance. I don't know which parts I filled in myself (is it even set in summer?), but it really works.

From Celephaïs:
"But some of us awake in the night with strange phantasms of enchanted hills and gardens, of fountains that sing in the sun, of golden cliffs overhanging murmuring seas, of plains that stretch down to sleeping cities of bronze and stone, and of shadowy companies of heroes that ride caparisoned white horses along the edges of thick forests; and then we know that we have looked back through the ivory gates into that world of wonder which was ours before we were wise and unhappy." Which I like because it resembles my own dreams. Although mine usually end "and then I met Henry Rollins, who was a German-speaking doctor for some reason. I struggled to explain my symptoms to him for ten minutes. Then his head blew up like a balloon, before it burst."

But for every Shadow, Outsider or Mountains, there's two Imprisoned with the Pharaohs...

You guys should check out Thomas Ligotti. The Last Feast of Harlequin is a good place to start.

(I watched The Mist (movie) and The Thing. Also In the Mouth of Madness, for obvious reasons. Which was okay. Sam Neill's accent is hilarious.)

In In the Mouth of Madness Sam Neill plays an American? Irish? Australian insurance investigator?

I left the screen open as I was making coffee and my cat almost broke it by jumping against your signature.

It's hard to find an answer to this because you get a gazillion results related to weight loss, maybe one of you paid attention in physics class:

When you weigh dried cat food (or anything really), in a bowl on a kitchen scale, and you move the food around, the weight shouldn't change right? Because it frequently does. Maybe the scale is fucked.

Make sure your scale is on a -flat- surface, and recalibrate it every time you move it

But the stuff changing weight when you move it around is very probably because the scale isn't on a flat surface
