it's actually like I use my debit card for everything to make it easy to track my expenses, and I don't have a credit card because I already spend money before I get it, and I don't want to budget for paying for things that I bought with money I really didn't have... besides, you know, student debt

I'm almost thirty but I've managed to live without a credit card. Debit for everything is nice, though I'll fully admit having to wait the extra three months for when I can actually afford expensive new things was a little embarrassing.

Now that I'm between jobs, I've just applied for a credit card from my bank and it's both a huge relief and terrifying at the same time.
I only got a MasterCard this past December when I was afraid I couldn’t make rent for the month. My limit is $1500 and any time I use it I pay off the entire thing the following payday. I don’t owe nothing to no one and I try to keep it that way.

I'm going to make some big purchases to get myself situated, but then I'm doing this. Paying that shit off, leaving the credit card hidden at home, keeping it at $0 until something else huge comes up.

not wanting debt is a generational thing
our parents (I’m generalizing, but by that I mean people who came of age in the 70’s basically) responded to incentivized debt (mortgage => tax breaks) and it did alright by them
but we arrived pretty much just in time to watch that system collapse and derail our economic futures, and we don’t trust it,
which we shouldn’t,
because the expansion of consumer credit is not to encourage investment. that’s a pretty lie. it’s a way of temporarily alleviating the effects of wage suppression on the lower classes (meaning almost everybody at this point) and it’s unsustainable, because the rich start amassing fortunes that are based on debt owed by the rest of us- money that doesn’t actually exist as anything except a promise of future payment that might never come

the majority of young adults collectively choosing to stay out of debt helps avoid that problem, but also kind of blows a smokescreen away from economic inequality, and... well, *gestures vaguely around at everything*

the problem for you and me is that handling debt is the only way the system is set up to gauge fiscal responsibility, so without it, you get charged higher premiums and interest rates whenever you deal with banks- in theory, this is because lower credit score implies higher risk that the loan won’t be payed off, so they request a higher pay-off to justify the risk. in practice, it means:
1) they get to fuck you either way, and
2) since higher rates make it harder to meet payments, and failing to meet payments decreases your credit score, if you’ve been fucked before, you’re more liable to be fucked again. ergo the poor stay poor
which is great for the banks, because when the poor stay poor they seldom have any legal recourse when the bank breaks the law w/r/t overdraft fees, etc., and the poor get fucked again

the solution (for the time being) is to shore up your credit score with small charges that you pay off consistently
optimally, you’d set up a small monthly credit charge (<$10. netflix, for instance, or newgrounds’ premium whatever help tom fulp out jeezum crow you motherfuckers) and also set up an automatic monthly debit payment in that amount, then you destroy the card and never look at it again unless your income situation changes (eg getting fired)
but as long as you stay below 50% of your limit it shouldn’t adversely affect your score, so if you can trust yourself the occasional nickel and dime isn’t gonna hurtcha
I’ve been told it’s also good practice to periodically call the bank and ask them to increase your limit, but idk why and I’ve never done it. sometimes they send me something informing me they bumped it up without my having to ask though. ymmv

It's like switching operating systems. It'll obviously be worth it, but you never want to do it for the months of uncomfortably finding new differences you weren't prepared for.

it's like updating skype. they remove your ability to quit the program and you hate them, the suited ones who have nothing in their hearts but hot gusty desire for next-quarter growth, but you are bound to them, close enough to smell their last meal of tic tacs and stale coffee and adderall, because your middle-aged publisher doesn't know how to use any other calling software

There is no way this winter is *ever* going to end as long as that groundhog keeps seeing his shadow. I don't see any way out of it. He's got to be stopped. And I have to stop him.

What's up with the trope in fantasy movies and series of (bearded) characters pouring half their "ale" over themselves while drinking? What is that supposed to signify? These characters are so wild they never learned to drink properly? These are such hard men their lips don't work? What makes it worse is that you can often tell the actors are purposefully trying to spill the drink (see: I've been stabbed, watch me force this fake blood from my mouth). They might as well be throwing it into their own faces.

The only example I can think of is in the Lord of the Rings extended edition where Gimli and Legolas have a drinking contest, and Gimli is throwing his back while Legolas calmly drinks just as much. The idea therein is that Gimli is rushedly drinking as much as he can in a vindictive pride that he as a dwarf MUST be able to drink more than an elf, which of course backfires.

The purpose is comedic

Those delightful bastards at Voidpoint released another piece of preview content for Ion Maiden
[u2]OYmMPo6ckqY[/u2]

It's been about a week now and I can't remember if I posted this trailer when it came out or not, but all the same I've just played through it now. Map wise, this is a singular (piece of a) level, smaller therefore in scale than the preview campaign, and without a gimmick like the 'Queen of the Hill' update being a wave based survival mini-game. What it does provide though is a chance to play with an additional weapon as well as those from the previous pieces of preview content and all their secondary fire modes. The pistol has a lock on alt fire, the shotgun launches grenades, the SMG is weilded akimbo, the minigun revs (think TF2 heavy), the bowling bomb starts running down its fuse in your hand so you can throw explosives more strategically, and the new CROSSBOW* has a charge up attack that fires a spread of high damage bolts, akin to the attack pattern of the red cultist enemies but, yunno, better. Took me about a half hour, fucking around and taking my time, to finish it which is about on par with your average Duke 3D level. Every new bit of content these boys roll out convinces me more and more that this game will consume my life upon release.

It also warms my heart in a painful nostalgic way that they've continued to homage the trailers of Duke Nukem Forever. The reveal had the 'READY FOR THE REAL DEAL?' lines from the '98 E3 trailer, now this one references the Gearbox PAX reveal trailer. It's a nice subtle nod in the marketing to the Duke fanbase that these dudes are very much a part of.

and a 180 from that, last night I watched Peter Jackson's new World War 1 documentary
[u2]IrabKK9Bhds[/u2]
They digitally restored old film stock from the war, blew it up to HD resolution, coloured it, used some CGI trickery to up it to a smooth frame rate, had lip readers figure out what men in the film were saying and then had voice actors dubbed in. It's stunningly engrossing. The entire film is narrated by archival interviews with British veterans of the war, talking about their experiences in it. There's no talk of grand strategy, it's a more human look at the lives of the poor bastards who stood shin deep in muddy trenches of piss shit and decaying corpses while artillery fire rained down on them. I have nothing of value I can add to a description that wouldn't spoil part of the viewing experience, but I was moved watching it and I would recommend checking it out if the trailer even slightly piques your interest.

thats it but i had a crummy day so here's an amusing photo

*V E R Y _ C O O L but unironically. Gorgeous spritework, unfathomably smooth reload animation, and i thought it a nice touch that the glowing red pieces were effected by the different light sectors.

Thanks for explaining that very complex scene to me, BB10Clock.

The Hobbit

Skip to 2:25. It's a veritable montage.

Lord of the Rings:

I was watching Game of Thrones when this occurred to me. I can't remember which scene that was though, because I was drunk. From pouring beer neatly into my mouth.
