Quote from: Slurpee on March 06, 2024, 03:24:36 AMalways have these cabeça grande plans for setting up a special evening of game for my friends that I never end up actually carrying out

there's a ttrpg that uses a jenga set instead of dice, like, every time you take an action that involves any kind of risk, you have to take a jenga block out and put it on top, and if the tower falls you fail and probably die or something I don't remember the specifics
and I was like 30% of the way through setting up this whole ass custom scenario loosely based on Saw 2 (the one where a bunch of strangers wake up in a house with a slow-acting poison gas and they're supposed to go through a bunch of saw traps to find hypodermic needles with the cure)
I had an old tape recorder and a bunch of little mini-cassette tapes I found in the ancient warrens of the local Rite-Aid and I was mapping out this whole like web of character and plot

then I guess I just wandered away to do god knows what else

Oh hey cool I'm friends with the author of that RPG! I've never had a chance to play it though. He loves a metaphorical mini-game.

I was just thinking about your old choose-your-own-adventure threads

probably gone?

Aww it makes me sad. I barely remember those, I would have loved to revisit them. Looks like they were lost in an ancient hard drive failure, though. Maybe I have some really old burned CD backup somewhere.

The only thing I found was some Borund, whatever that is:

Quote from: RobClock on May 29, 2023, 04:33:06 PMI completed a commission this past weekend and having done so accrued enough in my paypal to order A NEW TABLET!!

The Huion Kamvas 12! Recommended to me by someone in my Wednesday art club, it came out to be roughly $300(CAD) and should be here in two weeks. Long past time to put my Wacom Bamboo Splash out to pasture. Had a laptop SSD die on me a few months ago and when I put the new harddrive in I came to find that to install the drivers for the Wacom I had to disconnect from wifi and set the PC's clock to 2010 for some fucking reason. I guess that's the deal when you're using decade old hardware.

Very excited. Feels like a big step forward as an artist.

yooooo congrats!

hey you guys should watch The Amazing Screw-On Head if you haven't though

[u2]XbsDvGtTRWU[/u2]

iirc Mike Mignola wasn't even upset that the pilot didn't get picked up because it does everything they wanted to do with the series in one episode

Well that was amazing. I've followed Mike Mignola's art account but had no idea about this or.. really anything else he's done.

Also, congrats on growing your cat family Rob!!

what I thought was happening was each of the four scrybes would have their own version of the cabin, determined by how you played the old school part, but it would be cyclical, and your "real" task would be to explore the 4 different outcomes and piece together for yourself some way of breaking the cycle
which is kiiiinda what happens, but not really
(I haven't played Shandalar but if anything like that happens in it, that sounds incredible)
Man, I love that idea. Having to break the larger cycle of the 4 scrybes would perfectly echo the conundrum of the initial cycle you're breaking out of with Leshy. And then all that lore could come in as the way to break the big cycle, instead of giving it to the GPS nerds >:(

MtG Shandalar didn't do anything like that, it was an entirely earnest attempt to make Magic the Gathering into a fantasy adventure. There wasn't any irony or humor or metatextual commentary, but the feeling of getting a powerful card from some boss or treasure chest was top notch.

The idea of combining the open-world-ish adventure of Shandalar with the atmosphere and writing quality and card modification of Inscryption sounds like heaven.

although, I did put in some more time today and it turns out on my first play-through, two pretty unlikely things happened that made the story less satisfying than it might have been
1) I picked poe, so I didn't quite pick up on the fact that him taking control wasn't "supposed" to be happening
2) a game patch dropped while I was playing, so unbeknownst to me I was locked out of the network features, so I didn't get to see the cutscene that plays when you examine the network monitor after beating golly

so, the story makes more sense to me now, I understand better why it plays out the way it does, and I'm not quite as frustrated

there's also some nifty foreshadowing I didn't notice the first time, like the dredger wondering why poe wasn't using his underlings as bosses the way leshy did, or how hastily poe glosses over some of the broad concepts (because he wasn't making a game to rule over, the uberbots were really just tasks he needed you to perform)

I feel a little unsatisfied with how everything with Po3 went down. First, it felt like Leshy was already in the midst of an out-of-bounds power grab as the game begins, with every other Scrybe captured and put into his game. Am I wrong? So having another Scrybe pull the same maneuver didn't feel that impactful.

And Po3's thing of not being interested in the story or atmosphere or flavor of its world, while making sense with the secret agenda, still made a world that felt... way less atmospheric and flavorful. That was kind of a bummer for me, after Leshy's part was so good on those counts.

Finally, it feels weird that Po3's plan failed. The game is literally dispersed throughout the internet. Wouldn't it just make sense for this to be the history of how the game itself was released? Feels like a strange miss to me.

the column took me a long time, and the reward for it seems to be inconsequential in terms of gameplay
BUT
it's also pretty cute and kind of heartbreaking and I bet you'd like it?

Thank you for the pointers, I messed with that camera bot for ages looking for that clue and couldn't make out anything either!!

well, I beat Inscryption, nearly to death
it was about three times bigger than I expected it to be, which was wonderful, but I still feel an odd sense of disappointment, because at one point it seemed like it was going to be five times bigger than I expected it to be, and I think that would have been really cool

I think there's still a lot of hidden content I haven't seen, that the unfiction crowd will eat right up, but I doubt that it will add up to... argh
someone else beat Inscryption so I have someone cool to talk about it with

There was a point where I thought it was going to open up to the scale of Shandalar, if you ever played that one. That game created an itch that's never been properly scratched.

I think I know what you were getting at regarding the hidden content. I want to keep exploring the game, but instead it seems like all that's left is a lore, and I'd even be interested to know it, but personally when something is buried at a depth that only obsessive communal investigation can unearth... It stops feeling like an integrated part of the fiction. I'm gonna have to learn about it on a wiki, and by the time I'm back in the game, the spell is broken.

Maybe. I guess I could imagine Inscryption being written in such a way as to acknowledge that you're bringing impossible expertise to the table. Or also maybe I'm overestimating how hidden the content is. There was a lock I could never open, another I did open but nothing happened (?), some crypt-inhabitant who wanted an offering I didn't have, a flower pot, a column with three spinning puzzle wheels, and probably a lot more that I never figured out. If those solutions were readily available.. I'm just too dense to see them. I put in honest time pixel hunting and sniffing around in corners.

It's hard not to want more of what was happening there, because it was all so, so good while it lasted.

You ever buy some fresh bread, but then continue to eat the old bread and it tastes kind of stale, but you power through and only when it's all gone do you start eating the new bread, which by then has gone stale as well?

It's like an analogy or something, when you think about it. An airtight analogy for our modern age.

If it was airtight your bread wouldn't be going stale so fast
