for the longest time I thought this was an intentional callback, like how Ashes to Ashes reframes Space Oddity, like- "look, I was dreaming. there's no merry skip down a cobblestone path, that's a fantasy. the street is cold and lonely and I was awakened from that dream by the searing neon light of Moloch. we are marching towards a hell of our own creation."

but, nope, it's not. The 59th Street Bridge Song came out after The Sound of Silence
they wrote their mad prophecy of a neon industrial hellscape separating humanity from ourselves and THEN they made their song about feelin' groovy

which actually kind of rules, because it means you can read it as presenting a clear vision of an alternative. after the dark portent of Sound of Silence, 59th Street Bridge Song tells you "there's another way. you can slow down and appreciate things. you're never alone if you love lamp"

A new Thunderbird update changed it so that when you go back to a inbox, it re-selects the message you had selected. Pressing escape never de-selects a message, meaning once you click one, your preview pane is just always fucking on and that monitor is bright white forever. I found out you can change mailboxes and then change back to the unified mailbox to clear your preview pane, but this update broke that. No option to toggle it. It takes a FULL FUCKING MINUTE, sometimes, before it'll re-select, too.

There was actually a problem where Thunderbird just wouldn't check new emails unless I switched inboxes, and this problem existed for well over a year, but I barely noticed because I have such a muscle memory for switching back and forth already

anyway I found a addon called DESELECT which still doesn't make esc do anything, and the button's fucking ugly (has a color on it when everything else is gray, says DESELECT instead of just being a button) but I shouted "fucking THANK YOU" when I saw it in the add-ons list
