Title: Warcraff Movie Hype (Again, again)
Post by: PhantomCatClock on March 24, 2015, 12:12:35 AM
Gasp (//www.fightforthehorde.com) and gasp (//www.fightforthealliance.com). Saw some blue posts saying that's kosher. Not sure how it's coming out in a year when there's still no flipping information for it but whatever, that's good.

Blizzard's Chris Metzen will co-produce. This still makes me giggle and I hope it hasn't changed

pretty much all the information that's out there for it was from last year's Blizzcon panel which told us next to nothing other than showing off some props and revealing some actors.

I'm pretty excited for it because i'm a glutton for the Warcraft franchise no matter how bad WoW is these days. My only worry is that the guy they having playing Lothar is the main actor from Vikings and having watched a few episodes of Vikings i feel safe in saying that I have little to no faith in his acting ability. I also don't think he looks the part although that is, of course, strictly subjective.

There was a behind-closed-doors trailer for it at Blizzcon but it was only for attendees of the panel. I don't know why they're so hesitant to show us anything but it's pretty infuriating. Of course they've announced another Blizzcon for this year and unless they're planning on another massive game reveal or a new WoW expansion (which there's been speculation on, but i think it'd be I'm a edgy teen of them to have Warlords of Draenor end after only 2 content updates), the movie trailer will most likely be center stage.

They showed concept art of Ironforge at one point. I hope they kept Ironforge in.

Really. There's going to be one more raid, at least, if you've done the legendary ring quest (sorry if you're on LFR and only almost done), so hopefully it's just that and more movie info. After two years it's only been pushed back from Dec2015 to Mar2016, so I feel like it'll actually be coming out around then.

And yeah, that was pretty sweet. Come to think of it, shit, this takes place during the First War. Maybe I should've been Alliance since Lordaeron isn't a festering shithole, yet.
Title: Warcraff Movie Hype (Again, again)
Post by: RobClock on March 24, 2015, 03:29:12 PM
Yeah Lordaeron isn't dead yet, but the story takes place in Stormwind 1.0 before the Orcs ravage the shit out of it.

then again they did show concept art of Dalaran, so maybe all the other human kingdom's won't get sidelined the way they always do.

I remember getting into hala-for-a-Dalaran by using Eyes of the Beast.

There was nothing but grass there. Archimonde doesn't fuck around.

First look at Doomhammer. No, not that Doomhammer, we already saw that. I mean THIS one (http://www.wired.com/2015/05/warcraft-orgrim-reveal-exclusive/?mbid=social_twitter).

Even though orcs have been scientifically proven to wear their armor 100% of the time, he's not in his cool black getup. Also no dumb earrings. This does look cool and all, I'm just not getting hyped from looking at it, I mean... oh, hang on, he's brown. Is Mannoroth going to be in this movie? OH SHIIIIIT HYYYYYYYPED

Shit, I was thinking of the cutscene where Grom and Thrall kill him. Orgrim was never green, hwhoopsydoodle.
Title: Warcraff Movie Hype (Again, again)
Post by: RobClock on May 20, 2015, 07:26:43 AM
What? Yes he was. Doomhammer was Blackhand's second in command during the first war. He drank the demon blood just like everyone else.

also; they changed his hair and facial hair, and he's not wearing the black/gold plate armour so there is literally nothing about this design that doesn't make it just a generic orc.

also i really wish blizzard would stop designing all their orcs to just be beefy attractive dudes instead of grotesque monsters. I fucking hate their 'have my cake and eat it too' attitude where they want orcs to still have the cool factor of being a bloodlust warrior race but simultaneously want orcs to be peaceful shamanistic hippy race who cant shut the fuck up about honour.

this is just becoming me bitching about warcraft so i'm going to stop
Title: Warcraff Movie Hype (Again, again)
Post by: PhantomCatClock on May 20, 2015, 04:27:44 PM
Orgrim was like the only non-Frostwolf to refuse to drink from it (but he did succumb to the bloodlust anyway, so I guess it didn't matter) THOUGH I'M NOT sure if that's canon, since I didn't play Warcraft 2, but it is in the book (http://s.guildomatic.com/62720/host/85/851fa427789b8dd19f8c7790fae2fda3.pdf) (ctrl+F for "Come, friend Orgrim!" and maybe read the page before for some context. Again, not sure how canon it is, but this was written in 2006, and the gist of it is that Orgrim had his suspicions that the orcs were being deceived, as well. He plays it off so well you'd think he was a rogue.) (P.S. don't be fooled by how awful the scan on this book is--yes, some letters were changed in the output, but it really is poorly written without those added errors)

Post by: RobClock on May 20, 2015, 11:34:03 PM
The concept that not every orc drank the demon blood is a retcon, but regardless of whether or not he drank the demon blood, during the period of time that the dark portal was under construction and hellfire peninsula was drying up, the fel magic was corrupting all the orcs just from exposure and they had all turned green by the time they invaded Azeroth.  I own the 'Chronicles of War' anthology book so I'm not sure if what I'm referencing is from Rise of the Horde, or Tides of Darkness. It's been ages since i read any of it.

The novelizations of the older games are more canonically acceptable than the actual games because they're retconned all to shit to fit the new streamlined world narrative Bliz has been trying to force for years now. But even then Blizzard has shown absolutely no regard for established canon and they frequently just do whatever the fuck they want If they think it's cool at the time. See: End of WotLK, End of Cataclysm, and the entirety of WoD and the buildup to it.

I've been reading nerdspout all day, now, and you're definitely right and bah, I was even wrong on the idea. The blood just gave them the glowy red eyes, it was the fel magic that turned their skin green. asdf but anyway hey a First War movie. I wonder if Lothar's death is gonna be in it (and if it's going to be the ambushy large battle death in the game or the HONORABLE ONE ON ONE DEATH in the book)
Title: Warcraff Movie Hype (Again, again)
Post by: RobClock on May 22, 2015, 12:22:32 AM
oh it'll definitely be the one-on-one death if they get that far. Look up the Lothar and Orgrim TCG cards for some really cool artwork of the standoff. It's pretty much hard canon.

I think they'll end the movie with the destruction of Stormwind though.

I'm giving 5:1 odds of them ignoring any of the story outside of the characters, if anyone wants to place bets on this taking the comic book movie route

http://www.wowhead.com/news=248294/sdcc-legendary-films-panel-warcraft-movie-site-lothar-and-durotan-character-art

Looks like it waaaaasn't a trailer? Ã,¿Ã,¿Ã,¿Ã·Ã·Ã·????Ã,¿?Ã,¿Ã,¿??Ã,¿Ã,¿?? Even the Battlenet splash said the trailer was coming down at 2:30 PST today.

The orc statues they had sitting around--for the movie, not the video game--are nice and orcly shaped, but that Durotan from the poster looks

ugh?

he looks ugh. This might be the first twinge of unhype I felt but BY GOLLY STILL HYPED.
Title: Warcraff Movie Hype (Again, again)
Post by: PhantomCatClock on July 11, 2015, 06:30:18 PM
They also announced a graphic novel tie-in with the movie and I've only seen one page (https://bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net/cms/content_folder_media/4ZZ58JMCUZ001436383908478.jpg) of it but I am also hyped for that. This hype is fueled by pure fanboyism at this point because all other sources of hype have started to dry out.
Title: Warcraff Movie Hype (Again, again)
Post by: RobClock on July 12, 2015, 09:32:25 AM
Yeah that Orc poster looks like shit. If that's supposed to be Durotan I'm very worried.

On the other hand that VR thing of the gryphon flying over Stormwind was gorgeous.
Title: Warcraff Movie Hype (Again, again)
Post by: PhantomCatClock on July 12, 2015, 09:48:28 AM
Could you imagine if both the poster and the statues were accurate and Durotan looked like an apeman while Orgrim looked like a giant ripped Warcraft orc in the actual movie?

So there was a trailer? Anyway, now it's November. https://twitter.com/manmademoon/status/620048261722669056

This is what happens when you make a movie for the company that nearly completed StarCraft 2 before announcing they were working on StarCraft 2.

Edit: Though these fine folks (http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/12/8935877/warcraft-trailer-drawing-comic-con-2015) caught the Medivh scene that Perculia talked about.

yeah, big surprise, they're holding it until Blizzcon so they can use it to generate hype opposite WoW, SC, and D3- none of which are doing particularly hot these days with their core audiences.

also I cannot fucking believe that we're doing a First War movie and they still managed to not only include Thrall, but PUT HIM IN THE FUCKING TRAILER.

Post by: PhantomCatClock on July 13, 2015, 08:12:27 AM
Where'd you hear that? (And I remember someone in the Wowhead comments saying they were miffed that they gave someone--Durotan?--blue eyes. Sure you weren't seeing him?)

long live VCR, our great forum overlord! :D
(seriously sir, thank you)

also
wow, i bet that warcraft will be a huge success.

which makes me think...

why noone did a halo movie (yet)?
i mean yes, some people did some short halo-themed movies, but why not making a long, 2-hour movie with masterchief beating the crap out of aliens, talking with cortana and chilling with the arbiter?
i have heard 3-4 years ago that peter jackson was going to direct a halo movie.
it would be profitable, thats for sure.

i liked the deadpool movie trailer BTW. awesome stuff.

Anybody still give a shit about this whole thing?

Every trailer has made the movie look more generic and shitty than the last and all positivity I had for the project died months ago. Early reviews are starting to roll out and it's looking none-too-good (http://www.metacritic.com/movie/warcraft).

But on another note, Blizzard posted the OST on twitter. https://soundcloud.com/backlotmusic/sets/warcraft-soundtrack-ramin-djawadi
Started listening to it and I'm a little disappointed there's no game-theme reprises thusfar, but then I shouldn't criticize them for not-recycling shit.

I stand by this. I usually watch movies in theatres twice--once with a purely critical eye to see whether or not I think it's good, and once again to see if I actually like it/rewatch with the intent of enjoying it. Liking something can get in the way of deciding if it's good or not, y'know.

This movie, though. I know it's going to be bad. Going to dive straight in with the 'do I like it?' phase. That said, I'm a little excited to have a slough of new players invading WoW. Wish it was closer to Legion.

So far my predictions have been correct: reviews say it sucks, box office income say people are watching it over and over anyway. I will be one of those people.

Also, since there's no WoW thread, is transmogging just going to be a tab like mounts and pets and toys? Jesus Christ, what useless shit are they going to put on my yak this time, a digital clock?

So comic book nerds will froth about the stories being different, but I remember when the leaked trailer footage came out for this, the Warcraft nerds were mad that Orgrim's armor wasn't black and like, wow, wait until you guys see the inevitable story differences. Plus he didn't stand a chance, even if the movie was great: people have been waiting eleven years for this.

most of my irl friends and acquaintances are (or used to be) big fans of WoW/dotta/online multiplayer stuff by blizzard, so they are excited as hell about this movie, while i stand in silence, shocked.

is WoW that good? i mean, i've played 1 game and it was OK... but im not a big fan.

Holy shit the movie is bad. With all my tempered expectations, with all the bullshit retcons I was willing to let slide, the ending of the movie still managed to be a massive fucking insult.

Even just from the film-making perspective, it's a disaster. They say the studio cut 40 minutes of screentime and it fucking shows. Within the first five minutes you start on Draenor, have the dark portal open, move to the black morass, cut to ironforge, cut to stormwind, cut to goldshire- it has no room to breathe, you're left struggling to keep up with what's even happening. The acting is horrible as well. Travis Fimmel, in particular, can't seem decide on an accent for his role.

Please don't pay money to see this.

but Rob, I saw a new commercial for it and Gul'dan looks amazing. Durotan still looks like someone tried to use ape shit as clay to make another ape out of it, and what the fuck retcons you already retconned the entire first war in WoW

where I was going with that is I still need to see it. At this point, I'm not sure if I want to

I couldn't help thinking of this over and over. I took a friend who knew nothing about WarCraft and he enjoyed the movie, but I kind of facepalmed when they dropped the names KARAZHAN STORMWIND GOLDSHIRE LAUGHING SKULL etc but he said he kept up and had a blast. Then he asked me which one Gul'dan was, again.

disposable income and potential investment opportunity since I'm obviously going to be the only person to buy it. what if it becomes a cult classic? the six year olds today do nothing but watch other people play minecraft on youtube. by the time they're 26 this will be considered a cult masterpiece
