Title: Shakespeare translated to 'street'
Post by: BobbyClock on April 26, 2008, 03:07:41 AM
Disgusting (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23480218-details/Bling+Lear:+Shakespeare+meets+Ali+G+in+new+chavs'+guide+to+the+Bard/article.do)

(https://clockcrew.net/talk/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.dailymail.co.uk%2Fi%2Fpix%2F2008%2F04_05%2FchavDM2404_468x274.jpg&hash=1d904ec58e7c1b91198144eee402d67fd0d7de86)

Originally intended as satire, I just saw the author on television state that he really hopes for kids to learn of Shakespeare's works through this.. garbage. I honest to God hope it falls flat. As good as it is to extend a bit of culture, doing it through such dumbed down methods that practically shit all over the original works is bleh~

Dumb fucks today need to be slapped back into place, not catered for.

Edit: Speculation, but this is likely to be something our ham-fisted education system might actually take into consideration in using for modern day learning of Shakespeare.

The sad part is that our current society isn't likely to just break out into destruction and chaos and destroy itself, but I wish it did.

what pisses me off is it's not just shakespeare that's getting raped, here.

the whole fun of hip-hop integrating other cultural aspects into itself is that the originals don't get lost in the shuffle

when hip-hop takes kung-fu, or techno, or a rock song, it takes what's cool about those things and adds them into the fucked up cultural goulash
when it's done right, it's incredible

shakespeare's work is essentially an idyllic mixture of poetry and prose, mashed together to the point that they can't be separated

it would be a perfect match for current urban culture, but only in the hands of a non-retard, which this man clearly is not.

Shakespear's too well written to butcher like that, but it might make reading Tolkien tolerable.

This kind of bugged me, but knowing it's tongue in cheek (it better fucking be) makes it at least slightly funny

That movie was fine since all it did was update the timesetting, not "updating" the play itself.

Not saying it didn't suck, though.

I don't know, the older variant of English and the modern Australian drug/crime ring theme didn't really mix. If you're going to remake Shakespeare, do it well.

I think they could have gotten away with it, if it wasn't blatantly obvious that none of the actors in the movie had the slightest fucking clue what they were saying.
