We can all agree is awesome? I don't mean sex, or air, but something in terms of media, anything, an ancient statue or rap album, what can everyone here honestly agree is really awesome.

The Simpsons started going downhill before the movie was released.
Wanna talk about an awesome show? King of the Hill.
I love KIng of the Hill, but Simpsons has a better chace of being liked by everyone, I thought.
Alright how about burritos. Bean and cheese burritos.
Quote from: AMPEEEM;1884313I love KIng of the Hill, but Simpsons has a better chace of being liked by everyone, I thought.

I can agree on Bean and Cheese Burritos, but only when covered in hot sauce.
yeah thats cool
burrito's own pretty hard, but you can achieve a much higher degree of delicacy by sloppily adding all the toppings all over the top. the only thing that should be inside the burrito in question is the beef.

I like king of the hill a lot more, the simpsons has always been just whatever to me.
But I can always go for a burrito. Beanchee, pork, beefy 5 layer. Burritos all day.

Beatles are pretty great.
I got one: Bill Nye is a pretty cool dude, he made science entertaining.
Quote from: Girclock;1884315I can agree on Bean and Cheese Burritos, but only when covered in hot sauce.
Why would you eat that when you could have beef and cheese
Quote from: F U Clock;1884484Beatles are pretty great.
I agree, but I know people who really hate the beatles.
Jimi Hendrix. Nobody dislikes Jimi
I don't like the Beatles, they were the ultimate hipsters. They were mainstream before it was cool.
Also, seconding Bill Nye.

Sporting a jimi hendrix shirt as we speak.
Quote from: clammo;1884491the beatles are hella overrated imo and when people talk about how good they are it makes me hate them just a little bit more every time
I agree with this standpoint, but I do actually enjoy their music from time to time.edit - Just to clarify: I like The Beatles. But I by no means consider them the "greatest rock band of all time", and listening to people rave about it can be quite frustrating when they absolutely refuse to acknowledge a counterpoint.
Not liking the Beatles is like the most hipster thing you can do.
Overrated? Tough to say. "Greatest rock band of all time" is a pretty high rating, and it tends to put a bad taste in people's mouths. But when you listen to Revolver, then Sgt. Pepper, then the White Album, Magical Mystery Tour, Abbey Road and Let it Be, and you realize they wrote/recorded all of those albums in the scope of four fucking years, it's pretty amazing. Not to mention that entire genres of rock music can be traced back to one fleeting Beatles tune.
I used to think the Beatles were the original boy band. Then I listened to them.
EDIT: Here's Helter Skelter just for shits:

Part of why people think they're overrated is because we're all so used to modern bands that are derived from them, so they dont seem very revolutionary or creative in comparison.
Quote from: F U Clock;1884538I used to think the Beatles were the original boy band. Then I listened to them.
To be fair, they were. They just happened to be actual musicians as well.

They were NOT the original boy band, they were the original Pop stars; granted there was Elvis, but what really propelled forward modern day Pop music and even record selling in genereal were the Beatles. Not to mention, boy bands suck, don't write their own music, and have virtually no voice within the political spectrum, and all that is the opposite of the beatles.
I like burritos!
good sleep is p. awesome

AWOLNATION: I really don't like the first two songs, the third one sounded cheap as fuck at the beginning, like laughably, and while the beat doesnt really get that much, the songs is tolerable. Also my alarm clock went during this and its going BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP in beat.
My personal opinion, it's grade at being better than the beatles is F.
Cage the Elephant
Oof. F as well. Heard this song a bizzillion times, it never gets any better.

Metric
Ha, oh yeah Metric, they get a pass from me. B.
Nirvana
A, I put them on the same plain as beatles, though, I still think they were probably a little bit bitter. Nirvana is like beatles is JOhn lennon blew his head off right before recording Lucy in the sky.

Yeah, I agree with you that 90s music was awesome, though, I must honestly say I don't I'm a music guy. More into books, speaking of which, how about the new Stephen King novel, anyone got a problem with that?
Not to be contrary but yeah hipsters kind of hate anything popular. You know the whole, "You've probably never heard of them..." thing. They specialize in liking obscure shit/hating obscure shit when it inevitably becomes popular.
Quote from: clammo;1884627except the beatles arent popular anymore and havent been relevant in 40 years. you wouldnt call someone a hipster for hating al jolson or mozart. the beatles are old enough where being super into them is retro and more of a hipster thing.
Wasn't there a sudden interest spike in them when Beatles:Rock Band came out? I think I remember seeing more about them on TV when that game was released.
I would think because so many people consider the beatles good that it would be more hipster to
not like them. Plus almost everyone recognizes the name even if they haven't heard any of their songs.
the term 'hipster' is ill-defined, leads to confusion and doesn't actually have a fixed meaning
according to this thread so far hipsters are:
the beatles
people who dislike the beatles
people who dislike pop music
people who hate anything popular
people super into retro stuff
ironically, wikipedia defines it as:
Hipsters (also referred to as scenesters[1]) are a subculture of young, recently settled urban middle class adults and older teenagers with musical interests mainly in alternative rock that appeared in the 1990s.
which would make clammo a hipster because he just told us he likes 90's alternative rock lol
its a shitty and confusing term plz avoid it

I see Beatles shirts and bumper stickers all over the place, and p-much everyone I know has gone through a Beatles phase. There are select people I know who didn't, but I think
most people will tell you that at one time or another, The Beatles were their favorite band.
They aren't relevant because they're an old, broken up band with songs most have heard a bajillion times, but they're still present because they, unarguably, were the most influential band of the 1960s, the most musically influential decade in the 20th century.
Not relevant, but they are the most important band of the 20th century. "Best band" is debatable, but I don't that last statement is.
They go beyond whats "hip" or not "hip" or what ever hipster is. They're just a fucking classic band, and all the irony and uncomfortably of most fucking bands is simply not present here.
define most important band
the beatles' impact was limited to the western world
most people in china only heard of the beatles around the 1980's
im willing to bet that India and most of the African and Arabic world is also largely unfamiliar with the Beatles
Clam could you please edit your post to use the [youtube] tag instead of the [u2] tag because this page scrolls kind of slowly.
Thanks to this thread, and an iTunes commercial, I've spent most of the day with 'Magical Mystery Tour' stuck in my head.

Within the Western World, they are easily the most important band ever, and even outside of it, they were huge. They were the most popular band in Germany, England and America during the 1960s, and had a very large fan base in Japan, as well. I also watched a documentary last year detailing the impact of the Beatles on the soviet union and how their music inspired the young to rethink the priorities laid out by them by their government, and helped influence the social change that took place in 90s in Russia.
They developed numerous studio techniques (to put it lightly), marketing strategies and invented the EP. They changed the idea of a record from "The latest hits, with some covers and a throw away song or two" to a complete piece of original art. Each album was an event in and of it self, and both represented the current trends in music and life, and prophesied where it would go from here. Again, I believe this is not debatable.
When the Beatles encountered Indian culture and brought it back into their music, they also left an impression India. Africa, Arabia, alright, maybe they aren't as well known as other places, but that doesn't matter. The Beatles are still the most important band, can you think of a band that has had more influence, a single band that has progressed music and kicked down more doors?
Hell, what other band has had video games and films released forty years after their split based solely on their music, with more to come?
Also, China? The place that has the biggest lock down on their culture and hate letting anything else in? C'mon. Of course they learn about the bealtes in 60s.
Also, North Koreans only found out about the peace sign in the early 00's. There was an interview with some North Korean guy going "We have just learned this hand gesture is supposed to represent some kind of good will,"

okay, so Africa doesn't matter, China and most of Asia don't matter, Arabic countries do not matter, India doesn't matter, you discount 70% of the world population
even within the western-centric world it is debatable, the Beatles are flanked by the Rolling Stones, Elvis, Sinatra and Michael Jackson in record sales, worldwide reach through tours and radio play etc
my point was that defining 'the most important band of the 20th century' is problematic and unnecessary
were the beatles of importance to popular music in most of the Western world during the second half of the 20th century? yes

Well, at least google agrees with me. "What is the most important band in the world" "most popular" and "best known" all ended up with several websites that pointed directly to the beatles.
I saw a documentary about North Korea where they sing at a north korean karaoke bar. One of the north korean guys paid to entertain the documentary guys sang Anarchy in the UK by the Sex Pistols. If that wasn't ironic enough he thought it was a patriotic song. It was goddamned amazing.
