this team lineup isn't based on how good the players are. It was first come first serve, and the results are depressing. Maybe we should set up a different highlander contest with people who don't suck after this one is over. You, me, stereoclock, maybe polyhedron and sobe. We'd be like a tsunami of rape.

Well I wasn't expecting to throw anyone out on the street based solely on my assortment of hats, But I'll take your word for it that the team isn't stellar.

I'm not basing anything on hats, I've played with pretty much everybody in the lineup and I have a pretty good idea of the skill level of everybody in the cc, apart from you who I've somehow missed the chance to play with.

I'm talking about making a completely new challenge here, to some other group. Smaller teams are pretty common in competitive TF2, and 6 players is normal.

If we did that we could do something like
scout - stereo
scout - polyhedron
demoman - sobe
soldier - propaganda
medic - thor

I think that would be a pretty balanced team that could take on anything. The only problem is that I can't think of anybody who's good at sniper.

Anyway, I'm not talking about kicking anybody out of the lineup since it's all about having fun. I'm talking about setting up a new tournament so that we can use the best the cc has to offer and shit all over the competition. All the people who I listed I think would be very easy to convince to join in.

But there is a huge difference in-between a good sniper, a great sniper and an amazing player. An amazing player doesn't need to be across the map to function as a force on the play-field, the kind of sniper player that can instant-headshot you up close (non-panicshooting) or just come at you with the melee and fuck you up. But those snipers are very few and far between.

Aslong as you're a great sniper I'd be content.

I'm a pretty good melee fighter, but it seems people have gotten more wise to the trick of getting too close to a sniper these days.

I don't get how there can be so few spies who realize that ammopacks/weapons recharge the ringer so you can use it every fifth second in intense areas...

But yeah it'd be a pretty shitty tournament if they don't demand Vanilla. I wouldn't mind because it'd be more fun for me, but it makes way for alot of cheesy tactics.

It looks like in Highlander the only items that are typically banned are the Reserve Shooter, the Machina, and the Enforcer. That seems reasonable to me since those three weapons are not even close to balanced.

It's so satisfying to jump with the gloves around a corner and quickly switching to the minigun for super-speed jumprevs, and then instantly heal any damage I take after I kill everything.

As a general rule any items that come out during the season are banned from competitive play.

CorpseGrinder, normal pyro in vanilla tournaments is essential, they fuck soldiers up, seriously a good pyro makes my fucking day because I'm good but I'm nowere near the pro's when it comes to pyro.

EDIT: No Machina? Thank god, a great sniper is unstoppable with that bullshit weapon... "Derp i can't bodyshot" well when you don't ever bodyshot it's just a total rapefest.

I switched back to the kukri after they did that massive damage reduction on the shiv, but I switched back since mostly in a hectic game I think there's more benefit to cause damage over time than brute damage cause I never know when someone's gonna support the guy I'm smackin' and kill me. I haven't really used the bushwacka.

Only downside is if you're dealing with a pyro that's too swift with the flaregun, but most of the time if you have jarate equipped anyway that's not a problem. If they're in flamethrower range you're fucked most of the time anyway.

Yeah, the main problem with that would be is I main the razorback since I found my main predator to be spies. I'm usually able to react to being shot at while scoped quick enough to not get killed.

E: Also it would seem I musta used up my bushwacka making something. I thought I used to have one.

It's weird, I've been having some framerate issues recently. Anyone know why that would be?

I hear this and Idno if the guys I play with are just missing or what but I usually don't have a huge problem reacting to spies shooting at me with the revolver. Plus it always seemed to me like it wouldn't be worth dropping cover in most situations just to take a couple shots at a sniper.

Actually backstabbing is a bigger risk against snipernests (2+ snipers) than it is to just start shooting them in the back, you lose your cover either way so might aswell just use the gun, hit atleast once (or just three times and kill them) and THEN have the melee duel. There's no difference except you start with an advantage.
EDIT: Ofcourse else you just backstabb them but most really good snipers move around alot and are paranoid every three seconds of which they're much easier to shot than to chase with a knife. Always exceptions to rules though.

Sniper has 125 hp, revolver does 40 at close range, enforcer 48, Knife does 40 aswell. So either you just kill em or you get them so low you can melee em once they realize what's going on. Distance also makes you less inclined to get your ass fucked by randomcritting melee and if you somehow fail you can still just escape easier since your entire screen isn't clogged by a melee brawl...
There's probably room to argue but over time I've just felt that it gives me more control over the situation, just as I almost always start firing my gun at people when it's obvious I'm a spy (running from the battlelines) since if they're gonna spycheck me anyway I might aswell do some damage making them less inclined to run around chasing me after my Dead Ringer. Especially pyros.

StereoClock is game for Friday if we'll have him (yes), else he'll play in the later (?) Highlander that ThorClock was gonna fix.

You have to realize, even most semi-pro teams practice together and use mic, we have a very split schedual of time, hardly any communication and of what I know 0 practice, to think we'd win would be naive, but it was much closer than you'd expect, they only really had like 3 aces and one was either sniper/spy and the other just went the kritzkrieg.

Don't feel down that you lost, in my experience we put up a great fight and weren't steamrolled which can be a high possibility.

We didn't do too bad. Most of the trouble was that some people didn't have a very firm grasp of the metagame. It's not that they were bad at the game persay, it's just that their tactics were incorrect.

I tried my best to correct people during the game but there's only so much you can do when you're already playing and don't have time to practice or go into depth with strategy. I would have liked to have been able to specify where the good places to build a sentry are, or explain in detail how to use the curving nature of the medigun to hide behind walls or watch for spies, but I simply hadn't the time. Plus I didn't want to spend the whole game complaining like a douche

What I'm getting at is that this is a solid team that just needs some practice and some simple instruction in order to get to the next level and actually be competitively competent.

I know that I should do that but then I get in the game and there's a million things going on at once and I'm trying to make sure my target doesn't get too far away and that I can heal everyone around me and check to make sure there aren't any pyros coming up behind me and shouting if there are and oh whoops while I was doing that my heal target rocket jumped away.

It didn't help that my game stutters half the time I use my mic.

Guys, guys, I think we all know, that it was MightyBooshClock that lost us the game.

Kinda. We had a lot of momentum going and we were actually doing pretty well but once it got to 9v8 and then 9v7 when propy dropped it made it hard to stop their advance  so they shellacked us pretty quick.

Learning how to be good as pyro is learning how to use airblast. That's the only depth in the class. Axtingisher is a gimmick that isn't nearly as important.

Spychecking is important too but that's entry level shit.

Airblast all the rockets, everyone that's on fire and your foes off ledges and into corners. Use the degrease, axetinguisher and reserve shooter/flare gun for maximum airblast killing. Enemies move in straight lines when airblasted and if they're on fire the flaregun minicrits. You can also be a defensive pyro. I usually use the backburner for it, and the homewrecker/maul are a must. Note that they are a 1-hit-kill on mini-sentries and remove sappers. The Phlog should be used with the sharpened volcano fragment and detonater/flare gun. Focus on building mmph as quickly as possible, then hide just out of sight when you activate. Try to do so behind enemy lines, otherwise they'll just run to their friends.

airblasing heavies straight into the air (especially while ubered) is a really good tactic because it's REALLY disorienting and hard to aim in that situation. That's pretty much the only way a pyro can beat a heavy that isn't a complete retard 1v1.


Don't use the Phlog in competitive play, it's completely worthless. It's ONLY for pubstomping.


Gearbox, I have to disagree with you on the minisentry thing. It's faster to just circlestrife around a sentry and burn it than to switch weapons and hit it once and then switch back. Pyro can walk around a mini sentry faster than it can turn, and it takes overall less time to use the flamethrower. Flamethrower can also hit the sentry from range.

EDIT: After rereading your post, I don't think you should be giving advice on how to play competitive pyro if you're seriously going to suggest backburner, phlog, and volcano fragment.
