Post by: Asshatclock on May 23, 2012, 03:19:55 AM
E3 is coming soon, and there's a lot of games I've been waiting for a long time.
Post here which games you'd like to see, who do you think will come out best?

I'm still waiting for Last Guardian even though it'll probably never ever come out and I'm also pretty curious for the wiiU because I'm a big nintendo fanboy.

Pretty much anything on the WiiU has me stoked. I've been waiting along time to have some glorious nintendo games in HD, created for the intention of HD.

i swear to god if they bust out another "new super mario brothers" game for the wiiu im going to break some fingers.

I'm interested to hear about anything PS3/PS Vita related. Other than that, does Valve have anything planned for this E3?
Title: E3 anticipation thread
Post by: NintendrCkolc on May 23, 2012, 12:56:08 PM
I read a rumor that Retro was working on a Star Fox game. That'd be pretty awesome IMO.

Other than that, I wanna see more of the Wii U and what Nintendo's first party announcements for it will be. Rumor has it Valve might be involved with it so that'd be interesting.

Bioshock infinite, the new DMC, and a slew of other games got pushed back till 2013 which is disappointing to say the least but I still kinda wanna see more of em.

Hoping for an announcement from Kojima studios. They've been working on a new engine for years.

Possible new XBOX or PS4 reveal? I kinda hope not but i'd expect Microsoft and Sony to at least announce their next gen plans. Willing to bet they're going to see what Nintendo does first and then copy the fuck out of them.

Possible 3DS redesign

that's pretty much it.

Metroid Other M was an abomination, anything Retro studios does will be an improvement. I'm cool with them doing Star Fox though, I'd love a good new starfox game. If Wii U has good online play then I'd probably be all over Starfox multiplayer.

I am ultra stoked for Sony's news. What I HOPE/EXPECT to see from them:

- Dust 514 release date (finally)?
- LOTS of new Vita titles
- The Last of Us details
- Playstation Allstars news
- New ps3 titles ( rumoured Killzone 4 )
- Some nextgen talk
- Hopefully some type of plan for the future development of Playstation Home
- Give players more reasons to want to pay for PS+
- GREAT emphasis on the future of connectivity between Ps3 and Vita ( such as remote play )

I will say that i don't care for whatever Nintendo decides to show ( unless it's jaw-droppingly impressive ), but I am curious to see what Microsoft are holding. Halo 4, yeah sure... But maybe a new Gears title?

I can't be the only one around here that has just become completely jaded with Nintendo over the years, can I?

Years ago whenever Nintendo had a new announcement I would get excited about it. These days they have an announcement and my reaction boils down to "Oh hey its a new console with a new control gimmick. Oh hey it's a new game in this same nintendo series I've been playing for 16 years. Huh."

Nothing about the 3DS makes me actually want it, the 3D screen is its main selling point and most people I know that bought one, ended up getting it essentially for n64 remakes. There's nothing I've seen so far about WiiU that makes me interested, its a Nintendo console finally as graphically strong as the PS3/360 with a controller that screams "gimmick" even more than the wiimote did.

Even though I used to hate when people called modern Nintendo stuff "gimmicks" that's honestly what it is. The wiimote did nothing but disappoint for most of the wii's long lifecycle. The 3D Screen on the 3DS is pure gimmick, and nothing more. The PS Vita managed to match the 3DS battery life and output insanely better graphics because it didn't waste battery power on 3D. The WiiU's controller looks like a convoluted mess that they can't really figure out what to do with. The fact that it was estimated to cost over $100 for just the controller, that they were considering making people use 3DS systems as secondary controllers because multiple tablets are hard to get working, that devs making launch titles have had nothing but setbacks just trying to get their games to work with the thing, and that it still relies on old Wiimotes for certain games all just tells me that this is just more of the direction Nintendo has been going in for years.

I miss the Nintendo that knew the consoles were about the games. Not peripherals.

I haven't cared about Nintendo for years. Hell, the last nintendo console I got was an original fat silver DS from a friend for $20. This was like 8 years ago.

I think it's absurd how they can get away with using the same fucking characters over and over and over.

E. The 3D Screen on the 3DS is pure gimmick, and nothing more. The PS Vita managed to match the 3DS battery life and output insanely better graphics because it didn't waste battery power on 3D.

I agree with most everything you said except this. The 3DS is a fantastic system. Yes it can do 3D, but it can also do a number of other things. If nothing else it's outselling the Vita by leaps and bounds. Play Kid Icarus rising, it's fantastic.

I'm pretty skeptical of the Wii U as well though. I'm kinda just playing a wait-n-see game with it. If the games are there and the product looks exciting, i'll buy it. If it's Wii v2 i'll probably sit it out for awhile. It all just depends on what direction they plan on taking. Laying in bed and playing a game on that controller sounds damn appealing though.

Obviously it's too early to pass judgement. I did that with the PS3 and I kind of regret it.

We'll see.

There have been about 12 games in the main Mario game series over a 27 year period. Compare that to the Call of Duty series which has had 9 games over 10 years, Halo which has had 8 games over 12 years, or street fighter which has had over 16 games in its 23 year history. I don't understand why people single out Nintendo for driving franchises into the ground when it's standard practice for the entire industry. Nintendo also has a lot of high quality new IPs every couple years, both first and 3rd party.

Unless you're complaing that they use their much loved, iconic characters in too many spinoff games like Mario Kart and Mario Tennis? That's kind of silly. Those are just party games, iconic characters are perfect for mindless shit like that.

Generic becomes pretty relative after you've used the same character in over 200 different games ( refering to mario here )

For Nintendo, Mario is as generic as can get. Not sayin he's a bad character, but I can't connect to Mario in any way, as I still dont think I understand him.

Just sayin' a generic white boy with short hair isn't bad at all if he has enough background to push him forward

I really love the idea behind it. Funding and supply lines are actually important aspects to the battle.

Unfortunately it's free to play, so the community is guaranteed to be crappy.

Is there any information on gameplay mechanics yet? Like, is it going to have health packs or regenerating health? Is it cover based? How much damage can a player take before dieing?

I don't know much about the actual shooting mechanics yet, just that there are vehicles. I assume it will be call of duty / battlefield esque since that's what is super popular these days. I don't doubt the combat will be fine, this style of shooting controls is pretty standard now. It's really the entire game surrounding the actual combat that has me excited though. There has never been a game that interacts with a completely different game on another platform in real time on such a level that this game does. The players in Dust 514 are literally fighting the ground battles for EVE players on the PC on planets they are contesting. The games are very intertwined and even occupy the same servers. The economies directly interact, and the players directly interact on a fundamental gameplay level, not just in chat. It blew me away the more I read about it.

I think it's cool that you can buy EVE game time with in-game money after a while so you don't have to pay the subscription forever, but you will actually be able to do this with Dust 514 as well. Just like how EVE players buy time codes and sell them off in EVE, Dust 514 players can buy EVE time codes and sell them off in Dust 514. After my ground operations become profitable enough in Dust then, I'll be able to start playing EVE again for free. I have a lot of friends that play EVE so this is particularly appealing to me.

That's would be disappointing. I was hopping for something more like Halo or Tribes. Regenerating overshields combined with a health pool would work perfectly for a tactical game like this, especially considering the sci-fi setting. Games with larger health pools and health pickups generally result in much more interesting area contesting fights and more complex maneuvers and advanced tactics. Then again, it's a console game, so it will probably just be about the 360 noscope skillshotz. And every team will be %90 snipers.

I too would hope it uses a health pickup with possible shields sort of method. I was merely stating what I thought was likely. Thinking about it more though, I don't suspect they would use a simple health rebound method, that's not their style of game design. EVE is a very tactical game and they will likely want Dust 514 to have a similar feel. I do think the controls themselves will resemble modern shooter conventions like sprinting, scoping, possible cover system, etc.

The whole 90% snipers thing can be prevented through balancing not only alternate weapons, defenses, and vehicles, but through level design. I hope they manage that.

I have faith in the EVE team though because if there's one thing they have always excelled at, it's getting even a massively complex game to be pretty solidly balanced. Also I'm fairly certain you can outfit your soldier and vehicles with custom armors,  shields, weapons, and things with specialty effects such as radar scrambling and other buffs and debuffs. Possibly stuff like drones as well. I saw them doing this with vehicles in a gameplay demonstration and I'd think this is the case with your soldier too. It's basically similar to how EVE ships are customized. If that's the case in the end, there should be a good array of options to counter snipers. My main precedent here is that there are long range bombardment ships in EVE that can far outshoot ships not designed for range, yet they don't just dominate the shorter range ships by default.

EDITED this like 3 times.

Actually Sony already patented that in 2006 and never really did anything with it. I think this is an extension of that patent.

They tried using it once, to show a commercial in loading screens in Wipeout HD. Fans got upset so they removed it in a month and never used it again. I am pretty sure nothing will come of this patent since it hasn't already.

King K Rool would be great. I hope Sakurai manages to get capcom characters like he said he wanted to. Ryu and Mega Man could be easily adapted to Smash Bros gameplay. My dream characters would be Goemon, Banjo Kazooie, Gene, and Hector from fire emblem but that wont ever happen.

I would imagine if megaman makes the cut then he would receive the power of every enemy he kills.
and then he pressed down + b or something to change powers, and the more different type enemies he kills the more powers he gets until he dies. that would be cool imo. and like the megaman games

If they put a Capcom character into the game I'm pretty sure that Capcom would require it be one of their characters in a currently successful franchise; ie, not Megaman. The Megaman franchise has been doing shitty for a while now. That's why they cancled Megaman Legends 2 and didn't put megaman in MvC. The only advantage for Capcom to include a character is advertisement since I doubt they would get much in the way of royalties.

The most likely candidate for a capcom character in Smash Brothers would be their current mascot, Ryu. Street fighter is BY FAR their most successful franchise and they have quite a few new fighting game releases they need to advertise.

And to be honest, if they decided to go "old school" with this I'd rather see Captain Commando than Megaman.

I don't see it being impossible for it to be Megaman, they put in Zero, and Tron Bonne. They even put in Phoenix Wright when I'm pretty confident that despite its awesomeness the Ace Attorney series still is not a good seller in the states.

I personally think the coolest thing would be to have an Advance Wars character. Lots of the ones from two have multiple powers that can be used as b attacks or smashes. Either that or Sissel from Ghost Trick. I guess it would be harder to work Sissel gameplay wise, though.

There may have been two megaman characters in Marvel vs Capcom 3, but there were FOUR Street Fighter characters.

I wouldnt rule out Mega Man considering he got his start with Nintendo and he's pretty much Capcom's mascot. We can expect more obscure nintendo characters at least. I'm rooting for Quendan.

Oh, so it has nothing to do with the fact that there hasn't been a successful Megaman game in a decade and Street Fighter games sell like hotcakes?

There are still more Street Fighter characters than the only other fighting game represented, Darkstalkers, of which there are only three characters. Sucks too, because I was hoping Anakaris would be in MvC3

Capcom just doesn't see Megaman as relevant any more. THIS is what they think of megaman now:
Title: E3 anticipation thread
Post by: AmberArachnidClock on May 30, 2012, 08:43:43 PM
It does have a little to do with it, but it's fairly irrelevant. I've read interviews where they explicitly state that they DO think Megaman is still a big part of the capcom brand. There was such a huge outcry after they canceled the last Legends that I think they have reevaluated their strategy.

Also, Smash Bros. has been known to revitalize games, like the fire emblem series and the mother series, and even if there haven't been any big megaman hits recently, he's still iconic as hell.

I think nintendo's pro controller thing is a good idea, but if they want it to work they need to include one with the system, not sell them seperately.

That's kinda what makes them undesirable IMO. I never bought the classic controller when I had a Wii because I felt like it was sold as an unnecessary accessory.

(going ofc by the idea that they made it to (hopefully) get more 3rd party support)

As for microsoft, I haven't seen much yet but the SmartGlass thing looks pretty decent. I have a feeling Sony will do something very similar through PS3-Vita connectivity though. We'll see in a few hours!

Just watched the playstation conference and I was pretty wowed!

The gameplay from the last of us really, really surpassed my expectations. The visuals, the realism in the ensemble, the animation and cinematic atmosphere. I am definitely even MORE hyped for this game. Ellie seems like a fun character to have around too, making quirky comments and actually helping in the fights.

The Wonderbook or whatever looks gay and I'm not even going to go into details about why (i'm not 10 anymore), but GOW ascension looks amazing. I wasn't sure about it, but that action-packed demo really looks great.

Sort of disappointed they didn't announce MORE characters for PS allstars apart from Nathan drake (which was an obvious choice) and Big daddy ( Big daddy!? I don't recall him being a playstation exclusive character?). I hope to hear more about that game. I also hoped they would be announcing MORE connectivity options between PSV/PS3, but crossplay is at least that.

And I was disapointed at the lack of release dates on anything except Ascension (which is in 2013 god damnit)

Watch Dogs looks neat. I'm getting pretty bored of assassins but at least tools you get and the world look nice and interesting.

That Beyond game looked kind of shitty from what they showed but I'm always interested to see what Quantic Dream or whatever they're called make. I can't understand why people are still doing regular motion capture when they have the option of doing the nice LA Noire style faces. It seriously makes a big difference.

I was really impressed with how brutal and upsetting all the action in Last of Us was, all the struggling and shouting made it feel really desperate. You don't see that much in videogames, they usually focus on making you enjoy killing people. I mean killing imaginary dudes can be fun but it doesn't make for a very powerful experience.

Nintendo's conference ended just terribly. I was really hoping for a big reveal at the end of the show but nothing. Just like all the other e3 conferences, no big surprises and that's INCREDIBLY disappointing.

I am looking fwd to Pikmin 3 and honestly, I'm kinda leaning towards getting a Wii U. I might regret it, but the controller just looks comfy and, if implemented correctly, could really change the game. A giant DS so to speak. I might not get it right away, but I do think i'll buy it eventually. Nintendo is really getting some good 3rd party support with the system and i'm pretty happy about that.

I don't own a 3DS but after seeing Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion i'm extremely tempted to go pick one up.
