Most Catholics I know these days are pretty secular, but I've heard that back a few decades ago there was some pretty heavy guilt-laying. My family is "Catholic" and they don't talk about religion at all, aside from my Uncle's awkward religious wife. I was basically brought up agnostic.

I consider myself a Buddhist. I don't follow all the rules, I'm not a very good example of one, and I don't believe in a god or a lot of the silly stories associated with Buddhism. It's so easy to forget that theological beliefs and religion while related are not the same thing. That being said, I could give a fuck less if anyone disagrees with me, makes fun of it, or portrays anything I believe in with any form you can think of.

Which school do you follow? I'm actually taking a course on Buddhism this semester.

I don't really follow any one single teaching. I have certain people that I like to hear talks from, and I like to go to the Providence Zen Center sometimes to listen to talks. I spend a good amount of time meditating, mostly focusing on quieting the mind. The dhammapada has taught me a lot of things, as has the diamond sutra. That being said I've also learned a lot from the Theravada school especially from Ajahn Brahm. I don't really get vajrayana buddhism, probably because of their excessive use of metaphor and symbolism which totally gets lost in translation for me. That being said I think there are multiple paths to enlightenment, but I could be wrong because I'm pretty fucking far from it. I'm pretty human, shit happens. Also I think that Being and Nothingness by Jean Paul Sartre has many very Buddhist moments that translate to 20th century thinking without even intending to do so.
