Title: Real Talk: I am afraid of becoming an alcoholic.
Post by: TequilaClock on October 21, 2012, 01:57:15 AM
So more than a week ago was my friend's birthday and I started to drink more often than I had ever done in my life. From then I have been drinking a beer a day, which is ok but my drinking has been raising more and more gradually. Today I felt a necessity to have two beers and it just didn't do me well.

I have read that abstinence is the best way to get rid of alcoholism, but I want to know if there are any effective habits to follow to not be stuck with the bottles. I got a genetic history with alcoholics around me and I really don't want to become one of them.

I would appreciate some help.

Wait, are you wanting to quit any sort of drinking all together or just cut the fuck down?

I want to prevent this habit of daily beers to become an actual addiction.

stop buying it and only drink alcohol when it's free

worked for me
and I also have addiction in my genes and personality and was afraid of alcoholism
beer suddenly became yummy and I was like uh oh. UH OH.

edit: don't buy it for yourself I mean
feel free to reciprocate as socially desirable as long as you're not blatantly just doing it so somebody will get you back later

Don't drink alcohol alone, or if you're the only one drinking. Maybe go get some counselling or something?

Also don't drink when you're not drinking with others

Can we permanent ban Nintendo forever also? TIA.

You could go to your liquor store and ask them to not sell you anything I guess

You're not an alcoholic. There's nothing wrong with drinking a couple beers a day for a while. Hell, sometimes I'll drink 3-4 beers a day for a couple weeks straight. There's nothing wrong with drinking beer and just drinking moderate amounts will not make you an alcoholic. What may pose a problem is getting drunk all the time. The difference between drinking because you want to have a couple beers and drinking to get drunk is huge. Most alcoholics aren't out there buying craft beers (they couldn't afford it), they're buying 40s and cheap vodka. I've known many alcoholics. They drink all day. They wake up in the morning shaking until they have their first pint of vodka. They pass out covered in their own vomit at night and piss themselves on your couch.

Just keep drinking craft beer and be careful with liquor.

drink until you have a friend, almost crying, telling you that you almost completely totally could of all the way died the night before. then never drink again. the catch is that you now have a depressing story to tell people while you're not getting drunk

or, you know, fuck it, dude

There is a lot of poorly constructed advice in here, I think. Not bad advice, just not well delivered advice. Alcoholism can be recognized by what appears to be a physical need to drink, which is usually manifested and justified within your mind to make you feel normal. This is caused by a chemical and hormonal imbalance within one's brain (in the form of lacking strong dopamine receptors, or lack of dopamine production altogether), and to a lesser extent one's body.

A great way to avoid alcoholism is to not drink. If you find yourself thinking or wishing you could stop drinking while sucking down bottles after bottles, you are an alcoholic. If you are just new to drinking and are a little worried you might be drinking too much, just back off, be wise, and moderate. Pay attention to your behaviors and moods, and the way you feel, think, and crave before and after you drink (not while drinking).

Doing all of this will let you get a good idea of whether or not you are an alcoholic.

PS Drinking alone is not an indicator.

Just for the record I drink about 1-2 beers a day every day and I don't consider myself an alcoholic. When I have to take medication that requires I don't drink, I can simply stop without that "Oh my fucking god I'm going to kill somebody" feeling. And believe me, I've got somewhat of an idea of it, considering how long I smoked cigarettes, and the two tries it took to quit. In order to be an alcoholic you need to be mentally and physically dependent on alcohol in order to function. If you're that worried about it, have a drink with your meal instead of by itself. Just the fact you're afraid of becoming an alcoholic after such a small amount shows you'll probably never be an alcoholic.

Its not the same though. It's much easier to just stop drinking beer everyday than it is to lift a 10 ton boulder off your arm.

Nah I'll be out of there by then, and my mother learned her lesson with my grandpa about what to do with hospice care. The idea that you can live a full life, and constantly be taking care of old dying relatives is a myth. When I took care of my grandpa while he was dying that shit was expensive. I also cleaned up more than my fair share of shit. Piss and shit don't really bother me. Also it's just my mother. My stepfather died, and I don't speak to my father.
