This is an unbelievably dumb and ignorant post. You should be embarrassed having made it.
Are you aware of an attack last year in Norway that claimed the lives of 77? The children weren't as young in that scenario (the youngest was 14), but the idea that shooting and terrorist attacks are purely an American phenomenon is baseless and ignorant at best.
And after a bunch of children get murdered your reaction is to post a video of the theme song from Team America World Police and not offer condolences or sympathy of any sort?
Seriously fuck you.

I don't think the deaths of kindergarteners is an appropriate time to make jokes. Of course this should spark discussion on gun control. Can we present it with some respect tho?
I can't make you share my sorrow. But I can make you lead us in a moment of silence.
This was really some devastating news. How does someone just go and do that...to children.. I'm really at a loss for words.. :concerned:
Though the one in Connecticut is worse, this wasn't the only attack on an elementary school today. A man in China slashed 22 kids and one adult with a knife. (http://www.latimes.com/news/world/worldnow/la-man-slashes-22-children-near-china-school-20121214,0,6383015.story)
It's horrible indeed that either of these attacks took place, and startling that they happened on the exact same day.
what is going on in the world :/
All those kids will never get to grow up and shoot up schools of their very own, r.i.p.
These things don't even phase me anymore. :/
The world sucks.
as much as I enjoy the jokes that follow shocking events such as this, even I in good conscious can't joke about this.
I'm not gonna jump on any fuck you rob bandwaggon.
All I'm gonna say is this is fucked up. Whats worse is that this phenomenon of public shooting only seems to be becoming more and more prevalent every year. Maybe I'm wrong but it's something that I noticed.
Even just playing out a scenario where someone would do this in my head turns my stomach, the fact that these kids were this young.. God damn.

Trolling NG users because they enjoy terrible hentai games and video games parodies is not at all equal to joking about twenty kids being shot in real life.
We should have at least a little discretion. This is the kind of thing you at least wait a little while about before joking about, not as soon as you hear about it. And it's not because you should be worried about family members seeing. It's way more basic than that.
Being "PC" isn't all bad, you know.
On a different note: have any of the major news outlets that misreported Ryan Lanza as the killer corrected themselves and apologized to him? They should, dude's life is probably a living hell right now.
I don't think you're a dick, Thor. I am just surprised the big-hearted guy who was the first to stand up for a 14 yr old's unfair forum scrambling is making remarks like "if we're all dignified and respectful are we going to bring them back?"

does it become OK to discuss making sure this never happens again? or did we throw that possibility out the window? is this something that we just live with now, since
getting rid of the problem is apparently a political call to arms, and we no longer have more than a few months' worth of wind down before another spree killing?
respect for the families of the victims, yeah, sure, gold, but it's gross for me to say we as a species should be discussing

Definitely not. I think it needs to be discussed, but not now.
Let the media circus wind down a bit and give the families/friends of the victims some time to recover from the shock of this (they'll never fully recover but you know what I mean). It won't take long, no one is going to forget about this in that amount of time, and people shouting about gun laws will not do much good right now given how noisy everything already is. Any arguments will probably be better off a few days from now when this can be better appraised.
But since you were also talking about the victims of other shootings: fair enough, but do you think you should maybe take it to another thread?

I'm not saying it's heartless to express desire for stricter gun laws and I'm not poopooing every thought that anybody expresses about stopping mass shootings. I'm saying I think it would be a lot better if people waited a few days to get into that, at least if they want to use the Connecticut shooting as an example.
As far as that video goes, yes, the way that event was covered was sickening and incompetent. That's one of the things I've been saying.
Quote from: Kombucha;1933432I'm saying I think it would be a lot better if people waited a few days to get into that.
Why?
Quote from: Slurpee;1933433Why?
The Connecticut shooting doesn't need it right now, shit's already too noisy and ridiculous. It needs to be reserved and respectful, because helping the victims is first priority and it's also obvious that giving a killer celebrity status isn't good. Politicizing it, even with good intentions, is just adding more inappropriate bullshit.
You mentioned the shootings in Aurora and the Sheikh temple. That's good. Using them as examples is good because it's definitely been long enough to discuss them. It's not talking about gun restrictions right after a shooting has happened that's the problem, it's doing that and specifically using that shooting as the primary example.
If you wanted to talk about gun restrictions now, if would be obvious the reason inciting the discussion would be the Connecticut shooting, but it would be acceptable if you didn't put it in the spotlight. Your posts were general, but they are in this thread, about the Connecticut shooting. If you made a thread about gun restrictions and mentioned shootings other than Connecticut, that would probably be pretty cool.

I fail to see how it's inappropriate. Reacting to a tragedy by wanting to stop it from happening again is human nature. Every spree killer has been an undiagnosed mentally ill person with easy access to firearms. I'm not going to apologize for having basic problem solving skills and a desire for notmurder.
Would it be impolite to politicize a death in the family by pointing to it as evidence that we should look for a cure for cancer? Or would that only be if we had an NRA-sized pro-cancer lobby in the United States?
Quote from: Slurpee;1933436Reacting to a tragedy by wanting to stop it from happening again is human nature. Every spree killer has been an undiagnosed mentally ill person with easy access to firearms. I'm not going to apologize for having basic problem solving skills and a desire for notmurder.

you are the dumbest motherfucker in this thread
they are playing liberty stands still on channel 16 right now ahahaha
Restricting gun ownership to the degree required to prevent guns being occasionally used in killing sprees is not only unconstitutional, it's ineffective. Guns are a bit difficult to manufacture, but anyone can make a bomb. Bombs, of course, tend to kill many more people than guns. Take, for example, the Bath School disaster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_School_disaster) of 1938, which killed 38 children and 7 adults. Getting rid of guns won't stop people from snapping, but it would infringe on our constitutional right to armed defense. If you want to stop spree killings specifically, you have to address the actual causes, which go beyond the fact that you can go buy a gun.
If you ask me the real causes are the stigma attached to mental illness that encourages people to hide it or deny it rather than deal with it and the social pressure for men to suppress their emotions. Generally these people seem to either have an untreated mental illness or have snapped under pressure that they don't now how to cope with emotionally. The solution is to address the general lack of awareness about mental illness and what it means for different people as well as the sexist treatment of men in our society. We need to be able to feel comfortable crying into our ice cream, and that means burning that expendable protector/provider bullshit and all the machismo that comes with it to the ground.
Quote from: MiracleFruitClock;1933444you are the dumbest motherfucker in this thread
Actually, he(?) has a damn good point. Black markets are always worse than legit markets. Criminalization creates crime. Of course, this is all immaterial because registering the gun wouldn't have changed a damn thing and an outright ban is unconstitutional, i.e. illegal and will never happen unless we abandon the document entirely.
the second amendment is an amendment to an existing document that was written for a world that no longer exists by imperfect sllaveowners and was ammended because it can be ammended.
the guns in question were registered to the victim.
you take the guns out of the equation, you get what happened in china- a lot of stabs, but not quite so many dead people.
if bombs are so easy to make and so much more effective, why didn't he make a bomb?
guns do not grow like heroin, and they can't be manufactured in your kitchen like meth. guns are made by companies- a lot of them in the United States. black market trade would not offset the significant harm reduction of removing the grotesque number of legal firearms, as we can see from the number of shooting deaths to occur in every country to institute a nationwide ban. people breaking a law is not an argument against making that law, by that logic nothing should be illegal.
obviously there are contributing factors to incidence of spree killers, but investing in mental health treatment, reducing media glorification, and reducing the stigma against mental illness are not mutually exclusive from not manufacturing death machines and selling them to anybody who has the small amount of capital they demand
If you think the constitution doesn't matter to US law there's really nothing I can say other than that you're mistaken.
It matters a fucking lot that's why we were given the ability to change it.
Do you really think any politician in this country can try to repeal the second amendment and survive? They'd have to be damn idealistic to try it, because it's definitely not the pragmatic thing to do. In 2011 there were roughly 8,775 gun-related murders in the US (http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/jan/10/gun-crime-us-state). The actual number is probably higher because the data used to gather that number is not complete. Let's call it 10,000, then, just to be safe, assuming that Illinois and Florida are the most violent places in the country. The US Census Bureau says that in 2011 there were 311,591,917 people living in the US. This means that in the US in 2011 you had a 1 in 31159 chance of being shot to death if Illinois and Florida are places that you should really avoid at all costs. Now my numbers on the suicide rate might not be quite right, because they're from the CDC in 2009 (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/lcod.htm), but I estimate that unless people have suddenly become much happier or much more depressed over the past few years you have a roughly 1 in 8,442 chance of killing yourself. Yes, that's right, you are three and a half times as likely to kill yourself as you are to be shot to death (and 2.84 times as likely to kill yourself as to be murdered by any means). Based, again, on statistics from 2009 (sorry) (http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2012/tables/12s1103.pdf) you have a 1 in 9,216 chance of getting into a car crash and dying within 30 days. Apparently we're still slightly better at driving than we are at not killing ourselves. According to the CDC tobacco kills a whopping 443,000 annually (http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/health_effects/tobacco_related_mortality/), constituting one in every five deaths. That's 1 in 703. Fifty times more likely to kill you and it's not even constitutionally protected. Tobacco can't even protect us from invaders, though apparently it can kill shitloads of them after the fact.
1 in 31,159.
The 1860 census (http://www.census.gov/prod/www/abs/decennial/1860.html) put the population of the US at 31,443,321. The Civil War killed approximately 625,000. That's 1 in 50 with fucking muskets and bayonets. If today's population had a proportional conflict that would be 6,231,838 deaths. Now whether or not a second American Civil War would scale in quite the same way with the larger population is anyone's guess. It might well be that a few cities might just erupt into warzones. If you want to find out though, trying to repeal the second amendment is a fucking great way to do just that.
So no. Fuck repealing the second amendment.
it doesn't matter if something is political suicide if it's the right thing to do. the gun lobby in the United States is extremely powerful, and its advocates are violent psychotics that would rebel and murder their countrymen? that's your argument against gun control? "we can't get rid of guns because of the second amendment, and we can't get rid of the second amendment because of guns, oh and p.s. right and wrong are defined by forceful intimidation."?
and now you're not even arguing that banning guns wouldn't reduce harm you're arguing that it wouldn't reduce it enough. ten thousand human lives for no reason isn't enough? how many human lives is your toy worth, cowboy?
Regardless, there wont be any substantial changes in our gun laws for a very long time. It's political suicide to even mention any kind of reform. Most voters would give up free speech before their right to own a gun.

In regard to Robââ,¬â,,¢s post and Patriotââ,¬â,,¢s response, I agree that that video was completely inappropriate to post but I understand the sentiment behind it. Patriot, you are correct in saying gun violence isnââ,¬â,,¢t just an American thing, but if anyone had told me today that 20 kids were shot dead in an elementary school and asked me where it had happened, I couldââ,¬â,,¢ve told you it was the U.S. This is because this sort of thing happens awfully disproportionately more often in America than anywhere else.
To counter Albinoââ,¬â,,¢s points:
- ââ,¬Â¦anyone can make a bomb. Bombs, of course, tend to kill many more people than guns.
Itââ,¬â,,¢s quite difficult to build a bomb that will kill anyone but the people standing directly besides it. Also, bombs donââ,¬â,,¢t kill as many people as guns do on a yearly basis. Itââ,¬â,,¢s quite telling you came up with an example from three quarters of a century ago when there have been several fatal mass shootings in recent years.
- Do you really think any politician in this country can try to repeal the second amendment and survive? They'd have to be damn idealistic to try itââ,¬Â¦
True, and a great example of the shameful state your democracy is in, when politicians cower before an industry which would rather see kids dead than lose money. Go capitalism.
- (Paraphrased) gun kill less people than suicides, car crashes and smoking.
Great argument for suicide prevention, crumple zones and educating people about the harms of smoking. Doesnââ,¬â,,¢t make guns any less lethal, and shooting deaths any less pointless.
- It might well be that a few cities might just erupt into warzones.
Come on now. That canââ,¬â,,¢t possibly be anything other than something you pulled out of your ass. Is this genuine cause for concern? Who says this?
Slurpee is right: how many people have to die so you can shoot a gun? You can shoot guns over here too, in gun ranges. Why do you need them in your home, your place of work, on the street and in your school? And donââ,¬â,,¢t say ââ,¬Å"to defend myself from bad guys with gunsââ,¬Â because in countries with sensible gun control laws, youââ,¬â,,¢d be surprised at how often youââ,¬â,,¢re robbed at gunpoint (so far, never).
Finally, United States gun laws have sensible roots, from a time where you had to defend your home because the law couldnââ,¬â,,¢t always be there. From a time where, after each shot, you had to reload your rifle which only had an effective range of 20-30 feet. It wasnââ,¬â,,¢t written in this time where the police is practically in your living room all the time. It wasnââ,¬â,,¢t written in this time where, in a matter of seconds, you can fire dozens of bullets hundreds of feet with horrible precision. Itââ,¬â,,¢s time for Americans to stop asking ââ,¬Å"do guns make us safer?ââ,¬Â and go with the answer the rest of the civilized world has come up with: a resounding ââ,¬Å"of course notââ,¬Â.
Nope. Ain't gonna happen.
Also, Switzerland called. It said you're full of shit.
And yes a revolution sparked by any remote attempt to confiscate firearms from Americans is a genuine concern. And it's not about industry, it's about people with guns. Any politician who was actually on track to passing a firearm ban would be rather likely to get shot. Do you know how many "I'll give you my gun when you pry it from my cold dead hands" bumperstickers there are in this country?
The most that will come of this is a law requiring that rifles be registered in CT, and that's a token effort because it wouldn't have changed a damn thing.

but howabout america's standing in relation to canada's? unfortunately i think it's a more complicated social issue than
just guns but of course that's a part of the problem, but i really don't think it'd be that substantial of a change if we illegalized them. don't get me wrong, i certainly wish we would regardless.

I don't know what you mean. Canada has extremely loose gun laws like America does, and they also have extremely high gun fatalities. They may have less gun deaths than america, but they still have way more than countries with reasonable gun laws like the UK or Japan

i guess this is true. i just feel like america has something specifically wrong with it beyond just gun laws that makes this shit happen. like, i mean, ownership of a gun alone doesn't make you go "hey, shit, let's go shoot some kids today."
i think it's really important that somebody try to figure out a way to determine what it is that's going on that causes people to be put in that extreme mindset where they think shit like that is okay.
i dunno lol i'm talking out of my ass

The thing is, other countries have school attacks too. Some more frequently than America, like China which has like 10 a year. They just use knives instead of guns and the US media doesn't report it because who cares about brown kids AMIRITE?

The UK, which has much stricter gun laws, had 772 killings of which 39 were with guns in 2011, and has a population of 62,641,000. The US, conversely had 8583 gun killings in 2011, and 4087 killings of other types. More than twice as many shootings as any other kind of killing. In the UK you have a 1 in 81,141 chance of being murdered, whereas in the US it's 1 in 23,975. The chance that you'll be murdered by some method other than a gun in the UK is 1 in 85,458, whereas in the US it's 1 in 76,351. So you're about 11% more likely to be stabbed or bludgeoned or whatever to death in the US than you are in the UK already and we haven't even accounted for all those would-be stabbings and bludgeonings that are shootings due to the availability of guns. We can't really know what those numbers would look like, but I'm going to guess that we'd still come out quite a bit more violent and not see nearly as large a decrease in the murder rate as 8.5k.
Something is happening in the US that goes beyond guns. The standard of living is low, there are widespread impoverished areas riddled with organized crime and rife with turf conflicts. There are areas of some of ours cities that have been abandoned by police. It's not the guns, it's the squalor.
It's kind of ridiculous that people only talk about problems with the murder rate when they feel like banning guns because the people who got shot that day were white. Want to drop the murder rate? End the drug war, fight poverty, combat institutional racism. Trying to enact a firearm ban is not only a pipe dream but one that would be ineffective if you ever managed it.
The UK is also on a little island. It's a lot harder to police what happens in a huge wide open space than it is to police what happens on a little island.
And as far as guns not being available just because they're not being sold openly, I point you at the Vice Guide to the Gun Markets of Pakistan. (http://www.vice.com/the-vice-guide-to-travel/the-gun-markets-of-pakistan#ooid=hsZGZpMjr6usvtLWOH3I7PXHz91Eo0x4)
Needless to say, I'd rather not see this in the US, but there's plenty of space for it and the right kind of mentality in wide enough regions that it's probably what we'd get.
Gun issue aside. It's the fucking pig media that are a huge part of creating more of these atrocities.
I've linked to this video a few times over the years but it's more relevant then ever.
