Title: Does anyone remember back when we did online DnD
Post by: Marlin Clock on March 13, 2013, 08:59:34 PM
I was just thinking about it for some random reason. It really was fun even if we usually had pretty goofy plot progression.

it was pretty fun. I could try DMing a game. I don't think I'll be as good as Corpsgrinder but I can try damn it!

If 4 people agree to play and actually show up, I'll run a game this saturday

hows about 6 pm clock time on tuesday?

If that's good for you, build a level 1 dnd 3.5 character. Once you build it post your character sheet itt.

Skype sounds like a good idea to me.

This'll be a great help for figuring stuff out when making your character.

Cleric sounds cool, although I haven't made one before.

I believe 6pm eastern is more 10pm your time isn't it?

The way we used to do it before was kinda loose, we basically did all the actions and talking on a chat client, in this case it looks like it'll be skype. There'd be no board the way we used to do it we just had to keep track of our own abilities and either used the honor system on rolls or had the DM roll for us.

You are right. I was subtracting instead of plussing, this is a common problem in mathematics as a whole.

Anyway, why not try something like Virtual Daivve? Which is what they use in the SA LP DnD, but I think it may just be for 4e.

No gestalt characters. Since we're starting at level 1 you won't even be able to multiclass or use a race with a level adjustment yet.

I'm going to run the game in a custom setting that's basically just planescape. Strange races and travel across the planes is normal in this setting.

As far as race and class goes, you can do any class or race that was published in DnD as long as it's level 1.

For the game I'm going to try to run it mostly straight, pretty much a serious, classic DnD game. Given who's playing, it should end up being fucking crazy by itself without me having to throw in dick hands and vampire ambulance drivers too often.

How in-depth will fighting be? Like, will it pay to take dodge as a feat or should I pick something that will help more with roleplaying instead of battle?

This is my character so far, he is a monk from a seaside monastery so he is skilled in fishing and sailing. Also he fight with an oar but we should probably just treat it as a quarterstaff that can do oar things.

The gods seem kind of lacking. I wanted a sea god for my monk but couldn't find one so I took the god of roads instead. I guess he could be considered the god of commerce and travel too.

The setting is the prime material plane. Basically, it's earthlike, but flat, appears to stretch on infinitely (nobody has found the edge yet). This plane is mostly populated by humans. You are all beginning the game in the town of Cobblestone for whatever reason. Recently, a call has gone out to adventurers in the town for help against a menace; the major of town has been kidnapped and is being held for ransom by a local goblin tribe. Are you a bad enough dude to save the major? That is all the info I will give to start, because that is all the information your characters would have. As for why your character is in this town, I'll let you decide that for yourselves. Just keep in mind that a level 1 character is basically a beginner who has not done anything great or impressive yet in their lives. This is probably the first real adventure you've had.

Gods in this campaign: The power of belief itself, not the power of the Gods is the true source of divine powers, even if the common cleric doesn't know it. So, you're allowed to worship any thing or being you want, even if they don't exist, and you'll still get your divine powers. So, you can worship whatever you want. In this setting we'll just use normal Greyhawk dieties. Greyhawk has enough deities you should be able to find one that suits any character. You can also be an agnostic if you're a non-divine class.

As long as it was endorsed by Wizard of the Coast it should be fine. Any splatbook or exert from Dragon Magazine is fair game.

It HAS To be for DnD 3.5 edition, though. No 3.0 stuff. No d20 modern stuff. No starwars d20 lightsabers.

How are you able to afford full plate at level 1? Starting gold for cleric is 5d4 x 10. That is, AT MOST, 200 gold. Full plate alone costs 1,500 gold.

Just so everybody is clear, you have to be able to afford your equipment at character gen. Also, don't forget to lower your Armor Class by 2 because of your negative dex mod! Also your hitpoints should be 9. Max hit dice + con mod. And you need to pick your known languages.

Based this on Marlin's post. I was under the assumption that the numbers he had by his skills was ranks in that skill, so that's what i went with as well.

Anything that I should revise here?

edit: swapped a point in Charisma to a point in Wisdom, gave myself Dwarven as a language, and after quickly consulting my Player's Handbook, realized I am a jackass and had listed feats as abilities.

Rob, you didn't pick your one feat for being level 1. Also you don't seem to have any bolts for your crossbow.

Otherwise there's nothing wrong with the character. The stat points aren't really optimal (it's smarter to have your stats at round numbers whenever possible. A 14 and a 12 is a lot more useful than two stats at 13). That's not really "wrong" though, if that's how you want your character to be.

EDIT: Also, I just noticed your hit points are wrong (at level 1 it is your max hit dice plus your con mod. That means 8 for you. ) And you didn't pick your known languages (you get Elven and Common by default, plus your int mod other languages. So pick one more language)

Quote from: Thor;1943037How are you able to afford full plate at level 1? Starting gold for cleric is 5d4 x 10. That is, AT MOST, 200 gold. Full plate alone costs 1,500 gold.

Just so everybody is clear, you have to be able to afford your equipment at character gen. Also, don't forget to lower your Armor Class by 2 because of your negative dex mod! Also your hitpoints should be 9. Max hit dice + con mod. And you need to pick your known languages.

Toughness gives +3 hp, so I actually lowballed that one. I think I misjudged how many feats I get anyway. Sorry about the others I didn't know what we were doing for starting gold.

I know I picked a weird alternate language but I think it goes with the character, plus we already have people who know dwarven and elvish so they cover most of our bases.

oh, that's my mistake then Marlin, I didn't notice you had toughness. You are supposed to have 2 feats as a level 1 human though. Your language is fine too, I didn't notice it. Guess I got brain problems.

What was your spell by the way? you should have 3 level 0s, 2 level 1 spells, and a level 1 domain spell. You can change them in the morning when you pray but still a good idea to have them set up before the game starts.

I had equipment but the dumb character generator I had deleted them for some reason.

I'll post my revised character here soon.

But I wanted to know if it would be cool to use a 10 foot oar as a reach weapon? It would work like a Glaive.
http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Glaive
Attack type would be changed to bludgeoning. Also since it only has a wooden blade it would go from 1d10 to 1d8 or 1d6 in damage, and critical down to x2 instead of x3 since it can't sever body parts. You can decide Thor since you are DM.

I'd take martial weapon proficiency for glaive so I can use a glaive later if I end up getting the money for one, or whatever.

I figure a reach weapon would be nice since if the enemy gets close I can still use unarmed while holding on to the weapon.

You're a monk right? I'll let you treat an Oar as a monk weapon (because of the story about Musashi using one). It would be longstaff effectively, as seen in Complete Adventurer. 1d6 damage, x2, bludgeoning, must be used two handed, can be used as a double weapon, and reach 1. That may not seem very good at first glance, but keep in mind that all monk weapons can be used with Flurry of Blows and the Glaive is NOT a monk weapon. Also, remember that while using a two handed weapon you can still use Unarmed Strike by kicking!

you only get 1x strength mod to damage if you use flurry though. For a normal attack you get 1.5x strength mod extra damage for a two handed weapon.

I'd like to get in on this.
I probably won't be able to join this week or next due to moving, though.
My schedule's unpredictable, so I'll probably be some kind of shifty type with his own agenda so I can flake as I please. Something of a guest star, if you will.
How allowable are evil alignments? Assuming, of course, that they aren't being used as an excuse to dick around and ruin the game for the rest of the party. I've wanted to play a Lawful Evil character for a while now but haven't gotten the chance.
Incidentally(and I know these are a shitload of questions, but I digress), would you allow me to play a Pathfinder class if I removed some features and dialed back the Hit Dice, BAB and saves? I'm thinking of playing an Inquisitor. They're a bit like a cross between a cleric and a rogue, the way a paladin's halfway between a cleric and a fighter and a ranger's halfway between a rogue and a druid.

Quote from: Buttplug;1943304I think our group is mostly lawful neutral you can be evil but we might end up killing you or something if you get out of line

I think I'm just gonna be a cleric. Lawful evil priest of the mercenary cult of the murder-god Moch. He loves a good fight, and he loves a good kill even better, but he won't do either unless he's on a contract or he sees the potential for pay in it. He's brutal, and callous, and cruel, and greedy, and on occasion shamelessly exploitative. By any sane standards, he's hideously evil... But he insists on being hideously evil in a socially-positive way that conforms to his personal ethical ideal. This is partly out of a genuine desire to maintain the fabric of law and order in society, partly because he can wring better profits out of his clients by maintaining honest business practices, and partly so he can troll paladins and other lawful good types by rubbing it in their faces that he's technically playing into their goals.

The ethical ideal in question, by the way, is that everyone should receive fair payment for the services they provide. It's the same reason he won't kill unless there's a profit in it; like his old man said, "If you're good at something, never do it for free." This can lead to all kinds of weird situations like him gleefully engaging in mass slaughter and necromancy for fun and profit, and then turning around and offering a fledgling workers' union a deal on his services because he agrees with their cause. He also takes personal offense when his allies turn down rewards. It plays out like some kind of really weird blue and orange morality that basically amounts to nice to the waiter on a universal scale.

How does that sound?

You can join in as a side character who gives quests, BUT I don't think evil is a good idea simply because we have a lawful good paladin who casts Detect Evil on everything. By the rules, paladins are not allowed to knowingly work with an evil creature or they lose their powers. I'll allow it if you can find some way to hide your alignment. That's a level 1 bard spell so it's not hard to get, though. Just 300 GP for a potion of undetectable alignment that lasts for 24 hours. Just spend some money on character creation on a few potions. By level 3 you should be able to just buy an amulet of undetectable alignment for 1000 gold very easily. It's a common level 1 spell after all.

Pathfinder is too different for the rules to transfer directly. Like I said before, anything 3.5 is legal, but nothing from other d20 systems. Here are some options for a cleric/rouge combo though:
Cleric with Kobold domain so you get Detect Traps as a class skill
Simply multiclass cleric and rogue
Multiclass Cloistered Cleric with Rogue for extra skill points
shadowbane stalker from Complete Divine (requires you to be lawful good though)
A straight Rogue who uses rods of cure light wounds and divine scrolls and just lies and PRETENDS to be a cleric when he's really not. That would actually be pretty fun to play I think, especially since you'd have to hide your true alignment from Poly or he'd smite you.

I'm making progress. At first I thought my guy was mechanically infeasible, but then it occurred to me that I could totally do it and should stop being a bitch about it. I'm making a Cleric/Rogue hybrid now, which helps, since now I don't have to worry about diverting most of my ability score points into Wisdom. You don't need 19 Wis if you won't be casting level 9 spells, and if I focus mainly on buffing, summoning and direct damage my weak save DCs shouldn't matter.

Class skills are denoted by  Cl and Ro for Cleric and Rogue skills, respectively. For all skills, the number of ranks is listed first, followed by the ability score bonus. Saves are listed pretty much the same way, but with base saves in place of skill ranks. In both cases, any feats that add bonuses will have their bonuses listed third. I'll edit this post when I'm done the character sheet.

EDIT: I'm done.

How do you get 4 feats and 45 skill points?

Two of those feats came with the War domain: Martial Weapon Proficiency and Weapon Focus in my god's favored weapon, the rapier. The proficiency's actually rendered redundant by my rogue level, but I figured I'd write it down anyway. As for the other two, one is for starting and the other is for being human.

As for the skill points, I might have fucked up the math. I get (8+Int)4 for starting as a rogue, plus 4 for being human. 8+Int should be 9, which gives me 36+4=40 at first level, and then I get 2+Int+1 for my cleric level. Which means I did fuck up the math, because that gives me 44, not 45. Thanks for catching that.

Normally I would, but I'm human, so my highest-level class counts as my favoured class and therefore doesn't count towards the number of classes I have. Seriously, the plain old human race is a munchkin's delight. An extra feat, extra skill points, easy crossclassing... Probably the main weaknesses I have are mediocre HP, weak AC, poor save DCs, no ranged attacks, an underwhelming amount of spells per day, and no spontaneous healing due to my alignment. Also, my death touch is pretty weak, and always will be due to my halved cleric level. I don't ever intend to rely on it.

Thor, I just checked my work schedule, and I should be free next Tuesday night. I'll probably show up to that game.

I may have forgotten to mention it, but you did all level from beating all those skeletons and rats. Just level up to 3.

If you don't know how to level, do the following:
Go to your class page in your Players Handbook or d20srd.org
check what your hit dice is, roll it and add that + your constitution modifier to your maximum hitpoints
check how many skill points you gain and level up some skills
look at the table for your class and see if your base attack bonus or fort/reflex/will saves have changed. update your character sheet if they have
see if you gained any new class features/special abilities
since it's level 3, you get a new Feat of your choice

and you're done! if you have any questions I'll be on steam shortly, just ask me and I'll help
