I think I just beat the first gym leader and then I got distracted trying to figure out if super training does nothing worthwhile or if my zigzagoon just sucks.
I'm assuming everybody else has beaten the game?
Zigzagoon just sucks. Supertraining OP if you're competative and like to EV. My friend code is 2466-2710-4187 but I have not gotten my second badge because i am spending too much time ev training and wonder trading. lol
it is settled. I shall carry a zigzagoon to the elite fucking four.
if they're still a thing. I'm kind of deliberately going into this blind.

Fuck it dood Go in blind. I fully EV trained a Dunsparse and I fully plan on keeping it on my team. ANYTHING GOES.
Dunsparce is my favorite pokemon, he was on my team for all of the original gold version all the way through the elite four, kanto and red. In lower tiers he's actually pretty damn good. Headbutt + serene grace = your opponent flinches 60% of the time.
And yes do super training. pokemon amie is useful too but only for single player stuff, it raises your exp the same way a traded pokemon does if you max out their affection and has a bunch of in battle effects that come up often enough to be useful. In link battles and the battle tower amie does nothing. Also route 10 has Eevees in case you're one of those guys who has to have an Eevee on their team. Also also having people on your friends list gives you more pokemon in the safari zone after the elite four.

I've been playing this lately. I've already done a failed Nuzlocke challenge (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Nuzlocke_Challenge) attempt, then I restarted, so I'm not too far.
If we're discussing favorite Pokemon than I must say my favorite is still Snorlax.
Nuzlocke challenge bugs the crap out of me, because in some ways (permadeath, no resetting, failure conditions) it's a set of parameters that increase the challenge in an internally consistent way that can increase immersion by removing some of the player's safety nets, and then in others (only catch the first pokemon you encounter in an area) it's just an arbitrary handicap that decreases immersion just by nature of its sheer artificiality.
Quote from: Slurpee;1962728Nuzlocke challenge bugs the crap out of me, because in some ways (permadeath, no resetting, failure conditions) it's a set of parameters that increase the challenge in an internally consistent way that can increase immersion by removing some of the player's safety nets, and then in others (only catch the first pokemon you encounter in an area) it's just an arbitrary handicap that decreases immersion just by nature of its sheer artificiality.
It's not really about the immersion though, it is pretty much just about the challenge. It was designed to make the games a legitimate challenge and not a grindy catch-a-thon with no real punishment for anything. I quite enjoy the games played this way. If you just want the immersion part you can always do a semi-nuzlocke and ignore the 1 capture per area thing.
This time around, I am going to just play it normally and try to assemble my favorite team. When the inevitable Pokemon Z comes out, I'll probably get it and use that cart for Nuzlocke playthroughs.
Quote from: SoBe Clock;1962729If you just want the immersion part you can always do a semi-nuzlocke and ignore the 1 capture per area thing.
Actually personally doing the challenge is less important to me than being crabby and complaining because I think the rest of the internet is doing it wrong. (I admit it!) The social proliferation of it seems undercooked, and that's what's really stuck in my craw.
I just think aspects of the challenge are clearly artistically meritorious and embrace the potential of the medium, and it bothers me that the version of this that became memetic has other aspects that are, as you say, pretty much just about the challenge.
Permadeath modifies the nature of the game by forcing players to fully consider their approach. There's potential consequence for every decision, which adds meaning to every small moment.
But, here, there's that, and then, also, you just kind of roll the dice once in a while and maybe you get an insane powerhouse, or maybe you get another rattata. I need more than that. I need
subtext, damnit.
Relevancy. Focusing on challenge as a single prevailing attribute robs the challenge of its meaning. It's like... if I said, "I'm going to run a marathon. I'm going to start eating healthier, go running every day, build up my stamina, and push my body to its limits, to dedicate myself to a long-term goal, to prove to myself what I'm capable of when I apply myself, and to embrace this challenge of human endurance. Also I'm going to do it in high heels whoop whooooop."
At that point, you could go run a marathon, too, but meanwhile, here I am, doing it in heels, like an
asshole.
But maybe I'm just being a grump idk.

Flounderman
I like you
I trust you
There are very few people who are still in the CC where I can say I trust their opinions on stuff
I feel disillusioned with Pokemon and feel like black and white were disappointments and x and y look uninteresting. It's not even the Pokemon designs, I think they're much better this time around than they were in B/W. Out of all the Pokemon introduced this time, the only ones I don't like are the Spritzee, Swirlix and Binacle families. I just don't feel like Pokemon X and Y, based on what I've seen (3D, fashion, mega evolutions, hordes, petting your Pokes), has anything that makes me want to play it.
But if somebody I trusted gave me some good reasons to buy the game then I would go out and buy it
I'm honored! Yeah with Black and White I liked a lot of the new pokemon like Garbador and Galvantula but the main campain was really boring to go through even though the story was something sort of interesting to put in a pokemon game and the post game was barely existant. Yet apparently B2W2's post game was one of the best in the series, I didnt actually own it. I have a number of reasons I like it I could list off. And that's exactly what I'm gonna do
1. Theres way more pokemon to catch per area than the other generations, and it even varies by grass type and color
2. every generation of pokemon is available in the first patch of grass
3. the rollerskates are fun as hell and some people prefer them to the bike
4. the bike is just as good as it always was with none of the gear shifting bullshit of other games
5. fairy type made dragons not as bullshit
6. poison and steel, two types with barely any super effective coverage, are the only types that are so on fairy
7. you get a kanto starter in the beginning
8. almost all the new pokemon are awesome
9. there's less than a 100 new pokemon so completing the pokedex isnt made that much more daunting this time around
10. Mega Forms give some love to some old pokemon and make some previously cool but strategically useless pokemon great.
11. everyone online isnt a hacker
12. if they solve the hacking issue, nintendo will likely ban them all from online play and they'll all cry like bitches. it'll be just like the idling thing in tf2 a few years back
13. breeding is waaaaaaay easier and more intuitive now. I actually bother to do it in Y.
14. EV training is also way easier. You can either do super training, or you can do it the classic way which is also way easier to do because of horde battles.
15. hidden abilities can be found by wild pokemon instead of just through that awful neopets shit black and white had going on
16. you can grow berries again. I have 400 leppa berries now and ethers are obsolete to me.
17. The story is actually not terrible for once, and the writing is better in general
18. the characters in said story aren't all one dimensional and actually have complex emotions and failings for once (this still isn't shakespeare though)
19. The professor in particular is interesting because he isnt just a saintly old parental figure for once.
20. Team Flare's theme is really good (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm0iM3Uh5Ws)
21. The space jam remix is better (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmZp-wzhTck)
22. Hex Maniac is extra waifu (http://24.media.tumblr.com/642908a6b5994267349d0d313708c19d/tumblr_mull19wuDU1qlqkego1_500.jpg) and basically the watamote girl.
23. the trading system is better
24. the gts isnt filled with hacked pokemon and there's less of that "gibi lvl100 mew 4 my weedle" shit
25. the pedo hiker from black and white's ferris wheel "found love"
26. tons of nice callbacks to earlier games
27. NPCs are actually useful. The majority of them give you items for free it's amazing.
28. False swipe and thief are obtained really early
29. rock smash and flash are tms instead of HMs, and flash isnt even needed at all. Outside of battle it is now just a weaker repel.
30. Shiny Mega Gengar is badass (http://1-media-cdn.foolz.us/ffuuka/board/vp/image/1382/42/1382422998094.jpg)
31. Shiny Mega Heracross is a vibrator (http://24.media.tumblr.com/909941530ccebf5d376dfa1ca8db4a90/tumblr_mutj68kY5G1r60ay5o1_400.jpg)
32. jigglypuff can kill a dragonite
33. the npcs have funny stuff to say sometimes
34. the battle tower trainer's lines are sometimes hilarious
35. the battle tower gets tough as hell as you play and they use clever metagame strategies against you
36. better game feel overall
37. the in battle models make the perfect transition from sprites. I never thought I could leave sprites but now I don't want them to go back.
38. battle mechanics are better. Yeah they improve that every generation and it's not as dramatic as gen III or IV but it's still nice.
39. the game caters to old fans
40. When you find a horde of Trevenant (the haunted tree dude) sometimes there's a Sudowoodo in the horde and the Trevenant's don't realize it.
I could go on and will probably realize there's a ton of things I forgot. To be fair there are some issues though. to name a few:
1. the post game content is kinda sparse, It's assumed "Z Version" or whatever it inevitably comes out as will have way more post game content, or there'll be DLC.
2. the 3D lags battles slightly which can be kind of irritating, and it's only in the overworld in a few places.
3. many areas seem to have been designed to benefit from the 3D but they probably had to take it out for lag reasons. The areas with 3D aren't super detailed and dont require a long draw distance.
4. You might be disappointed with the League Champion not being the formulaic manly male dragon trainer. Some people are bothered by it, IDK if you would care. I feel like I'm in the minority for being okay with the champion though. And also not thinking she's ugly.
5. The main game is longer than the others, but it's still not very challenging. only the battle tower is.
6. gary was here ash is a loser

Wow Flounders, thanks.
Yesterday I went out and bought X. I put two hours into it so far and already like it a lot more than I liked B/W. The battles are fluid, the Pokemon are varied, it changes little things up enough to feel new, I like the supporting cast so far - especially Shauna who is adorable. Without even fighting the first gym leader I have a team that's far more varied than you could ever get before in pokemon (Froakie, Fletchling, Pikachu, Dunsparce, Scatterbug and Pansear) and the fact that I can have such a varied team so fast is awesome. This is going to be the first time since R/S/E that I have a hard time building a team. I really liked the look and feel of Kalos right away. I am not really sure why but I like this game a lot so far.
I will post my friend code some time later this week when I get further into the game. I don't have a lot of time to play games lately so I think this time I am going to be casual and not play or build competitively like I did in D/P/Pt.
Damn, nice info floundy... Definitely swayed my opinion.
People are saying I'm crazy for saying this, but I don't like that I get two starters. The point of pokemon for me is that I get the one cool starter to open the game up and then I pick through the wilds while exploring via whether they look cool or would be good for my team. I don't like that I'm handed another one right out of the gate.
I also thought pokemon was ruined once I found out that EVs and IVs were a thing, so I guess I just have a different view on how the game should be.

You can always just ditch your starters in the PC, that's what I did when I went back to run through Blue a couple months ago.
You don't have to worry about EVs and IVs unless you want to fight other people who do, or get high up in the battle tower. Chances are most people you meet with the game wont be worrying about it either.
What are EVs and IVs?

I know, but it's just when I dig out an old pokemon I want it to be a game of discovery, where I find my own party, I don't want to get spoonfed anything and the fact that you get spoon fed pretty much everything in this new one just turns me off.

It wasn't really worrying about them as much as realizing that was an actual mechanic. It bugged me. I like to build strong teams, but I like to explore more, so it felt like that meant the game was intrinsically punishing me for exploring.

Trust me, you don't want to know.
Every time you beat a pokemon you get a number of EVs (effort values) (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Effort_values'), or just one. Those EVs add up to increase a stat. Say you fight a bunch of zubats, you get a bunch of speed EVs and your speed rises. This is why when you used the rare candy glitch in red and blue your pokemon sucked. In the old games they would only increase after you leveled up but now it's automatic every time you fight, so a level 100 pokemon can still train for EVs. There's a maximum amount you can get though so you cant just infinitely fight zubats, since you can only max out two stats and put a tiny bit in a third, people usually dump their EVs into whatever attack stat they're using and speed but do whatever you want. If you dont bother you'll likely end up your Pokemon's EVs spread mostly even across the board by the time you max out your EVs from regular battling. You can take EVs away too with some items so dont worry about ruining your pokemon by fighting the wrong people. I just do super training now, it has a handy graph to show you where your EVs are and I prefer it to regular EV training, but if you want the old way is even better now since you can fight hordes of the same pokemon (use sweet scent or honey to initiate a horde battle).
IVs (individual values) (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Individual_values) are unchangeable and the pokemon is born with them, it determines what their maximum and minimum stats can be. 31 is perfect, you can check these at Kiloude city's pokemon center, if the IV judge says any stats "cant be beat" they're perfect. Take mewtwo for example, if he has a nature that raises sp attack, maxed his sp attack EVs, and has an IV of 31, he would have a sp attack of 447. On the other hand, if it has a nature that lowers sp attack, has no EVs in sp attack, and an IV of 0, his sp attack would be only 281. Everyone you catch in the Friend Safari is guaranteed to have at least two perfect IVs, legendary pokemon are guaranteed three as of X and Y.
So basically every pokemon gets a stat roll on generation, and then if you play normally you'll have the normal stat growth plus well rounded EVs. Or, if you don't mind a grind, you can train your pokemon more specifically for higher EVs in specific stats. Right?
I really don't mind that. That's alright by me.
You can breed pokemon to get specific stats too, all the power items in the battle tower guarantee the resulting pokemon will have the same stat as the person holding it in the daycare. Say you have a male charmander with a perfect speed IV and a female charmander with a perfect sp attack IV. You give the male a power anklet and the female a power lens and the resulting charmander has perfect speed and sp attack IVs. Destiny Knot guarantees five IVs will be passed down from either parent regardless of who's holding it. So if you're willing to grind a bit hatching eggs you can get a damn good pokemon. You can pass down special moves (egg moves), natures (equip everstone), and the type of ball the pokemon was caught in too, among other things.
Quote from: Marlin Clock;1963018It wasn't really worrying about them as much as realizing that was an actual mechanic. It bugged me. I like to build strong teams, but I like to explore more, so it felt like that meant the game was intrinsically punishing me for exploring.
I hear ya. What I usually do is go through the game using whatever I want and just explore, and then when I beat it I train better ones. Usually some of them turn out decently and I keep em. My aerodactyl for example turned out awesome as hell, it was really worth all that rock smashing to find his fossil.
I just assembled a team of favorites. I'm probably just going to beat all the main game's content, get them high level, and then battle people online sometimes. I'm not sure how much deeper I'd go than that. I don't think I'd get into all the specialized breeding stuff or I'd never get around to playing the rest of my back catalog of games.
Quote from: Marlin Clock;1963018I don't want to get spoonfed anything and the fact that you get spoon fed pretty much everything in this new one just turns me off.
yeah. this game will hold your hand. it is not like it was back in the day. the viciousness of viridian forest and mt moon are gone. you get roller skates in the first hour. shops update their stock with your progress. pokemon sent to the box get healed automatically. you get the exp share almost immediately. everything gets dumped in your lap.
it doesn't really bother me, though. the rigmarole of pokemon's rpg elements were always second to exploring anyway imho. I deliberately went into it blind, and the game continues to surprise me. it's a lot of fun.

Definitely no legendaries, both singles and doubles are ok i guess.
I feel like a lot of fun in competitions is lost when they put legendaries because many teams also become predictable and unoriginal.

Quote from: AmberArachnidClock;1963902hey how would you guys say the online battling experience for this game is? Is anyone going competitive in this game?
Uhhh well Game Freak definitely seems to be wanting to push the game to be highly competitive as I have the theory they lubricated the story flow just so they would concentrate more on team building at the end. That said, plenty of hackers have ruined some of the fun already and they are delaying tournaments due to a cheating device that started to get popular.
I have fought against some people with rock-solid strategies and teams too, so there is definitely something out there.
My FC for the tournament is 1032-1631-4129
I'll post it in the other thread too
