Title: Moby Dick
Post by: Sombra on September 06, 2007, 12:43:08 AM
So, I found a brand-new hardcover copy of this at a used book store for like three or four bucks and I started reading it... and god damn is it boring.

Has anyone finished this from cover to cover? Is it actually worth reading this thing all the way through? Reading it is like hammering nails through my hands and then yanking really hard; it is just too painful to read for much longer than a few minutes at a time.

I found it to be quite the riveting tale -- not to mention, a timeless classic.

This happens to me with really long books sometimes. I quit somewhere around the part where Queequeg dies and they send him off to sea. It is just so meh.

Bump because I am reading it. At times it is boring, but the parts that are either funny, touching, disturbing, intense, or just plain smart make up for it. Just the way he writes is amazing!

Agreeing with this. I thought the whole man v. nature theme was great, plus Melville's style is wickedly enthralling (at least to me). The good parts vastly outweigh his long drones regarding whaling/harpooning/fishing techniques.
