Title: I've just bought a Genesis
Post by: AMPEEEM on March 14, 2008, 09:04:38 AM
and I've never even played one before.

What games should I buy?

Sonic 1-3 of course
Phantasy Star 2 and 4 (not 3!)
Shining Force 1 and 2
Gunstar Heroes
Dynamite Heady
Rocket Knight Adventures
Dr. Robotnick's Mean Bean Machine

I'll admit that as a kid, I was totally snowed by Sega's advertising (Nintendo's self-censorship did contribute to that).  I didn't realize how much the Genesis sucked until the 16-bit wars were almost over.

I agree, Phantasy Star 3 wasn't that great.

What joliet_jane said, plus:

Comix Zone is an absolute must. One of the most unique gaming experiences that still can't really be found elsewhere.

Other good options:

Toe Jam & Earl 1/2
Ristar
Sonic Spinball
Eternal Champions
Landstalker
Mutant League Football/Hockey
Streets of Rage
Altered Beast (only if you can get it dirt cheap though)
Ghoul's n Ghosts
Revenge of Shinobi
Beyond Oasis
Earthworm Jim 1/2
Flashback
Out of this World
Ecco
Rock n' Roll Racing
Super Hang-On
Vectorman (although personally I didn't like it much, just about everyone else loves it)

Didn't Tom Fulp have something to do with this series at one time?  Like a cameo or something?

EDIT:
Oh lord, he did:  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1024348/
So he gets his eyes poked out.  I must see this.

Ok, I got the Genesis in the mail yesterday, and here are the games, i have for it, and what I think of them.

Rampart: This game is like the grand daddy of all those "defend your castle" games on NG. Its alright, I bet its better on multiplayer.

Captain America and the Avengers: A beat em up, of course. Its sub par.

Sonic The Hedgehog: Finally getting to play this game for the first time, and I must say, ya its fun.

NHL '94: Fun, but hard as FUCK. I can't even play it.

Ren and Stimpy: Its hard as hell, but thats what makes it fun. Plus, you can slap Stimpy.

Taz-Mania: Dull, shitty music, and hard as hell. The controls suck, too.

The Lion King: one of the best disney movie games, and I still find it pretty fun. Alladin was better, tho.

Super Off Road: This game comes in a cardboard box, says its for Sega Genesis and Mega Drive consoles, but it won't play for some reason.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2: Ya, fun! I don't need to explain.

X-MEN: Beat em up game, but its co-op, so if you have a friend willing to spend a shit load of time trying to beat this game, its pretty fun.

Columns: Classic puzzle game, still fun.

NFL Football '94: I don't understand this shit.

Get World Series Baseball.

And NBA Jam.

And NHL is a little cheap because if the goal you need to score into is on the bottom, it's way easier to do than if it's on the top. Especially if you just push your player into the goal. It's as if gravity works against you in that game.

Our family's had a Genesis since I was born and before then, even, so I grew up gaming.
There's actually a funny story about our Genesis.
My dad wanted to get a Sega Genesis, but mom was pregnant with my brother.  So, she bought my Dad a Genesis, but she didn't buy any games for it, as a joke.  Well, when my grandmother heard about this she bought a shitload of games for the system.
