(My apologises for carrying on the Plato's Playground crusades)
Do you know people like this? People that will claim to have a huge dislike or even hatred for religion and religious people yet believe in star signs and ghosts and all that "spiritual" crap? I know more people like this then I do who are actually religious. If your going to claim some kind of intellect superiority over other people, it kind of blows your cover when your shilling money for some TV medium-psychic mothafucka to give you vague information about your dead grandmother who isn't actually dead BUT WHAT HE MEANT TO SAY was your dead auntie who is actually dead but "the voices" were mixed up.
Small print:- No human can communicate with the dead
Discuss.
Haha, wow, that describes my roomates boyfriend exactly.
I hate those kind of people. I know a few as well.
FUCK ALL Y'ALLS, I'MMA CHRISTIAN!!!!!!!!
But really, its irritating and hypocritical. :grumpy:
The latter isn't really religion though, it's more common superstition. It's not an organized system of belief, and hence doesn't count as one.
A lot of people get into that sort of thing after they reject the belief system their parents held, but they aren't ready to fully reject belief in the afterlife.
The thought of having nothing to look forward to after the ordeal of death is pretty damn scary, and it provides comfort to people to think that there's something to make the whole dying thing worth it.
That said, Sylvia Browne and John Edwards and the like are vultures, and should be treated like the lowlife cons they are.
I'm not religeous, neither do i believe in ghosts. I strongly believe in the scientific theory of creation and Darwin's theory of evolution. After all, Charles Darwin is on the £10 note :o

Well done and well said, sir!
Shut the fuck up wrench. :(
:golfclap:
Depends on what aspect of religion they hate.
For instance, they can hate how commercial mainstream religion has become.
Or they can hate how some of the bloodiest wars were based on religious differences.
Or they can hate how some religions cause hate. (Silly as that sounds)
They can hate all of those aspects of religion and still be superstituous.
Oh I love Derek Acorah from most haunted!
Every other monday I watch it with friends :)

Even though he got fired for making shit up. :(
well lets see i don't follow any specific religion but i retain some faith in the unknown. i've rejected all magic before, 100% atheist etc, but i dunno fellas, the chemical drugs, the things i've felt, seen. i mean i'm pretty sure there isn't an all knowing conscious god but there is a god and it is the grand subtotal of the universe and universes.
and i believe in ghosts and i believe it's possible to interact with them but not through a fucking tv psychic and you're not going to chat it up with them your paths will just intersect here and there you probably wouldn't even notice.

Huh, I wonder why that hasn't happened to the pope yet?
Quote from: Pappy Drewitt;1275137Huh, I wonder why that hasn't happened to the pope yet?
Another psychic tricked Derek by giving him false names - which were anagrams that read 'Derek Faker, Derek Lies and Hang Derek' and he was fired. I think the other psychic wanted Derek's glory =(
A place I used to work at was frequented by people like that. We sold "healing stones," aromatherapy meditation candles, bells and chimes that help your Ki, and other such junk. Getting fired wasn't too bad, as it meant that I didn't need to be around them anymore.
i hate people that don't believe in the bible but they do believe Uri fucking Geller is the real deal. Also stuff like Wow my cousin died in a car crash and when it happend my baby cried in the middle of the night at the exact same moment! he must have felled it!
Quote from: Balsac the Jaws of Death;1275152Because the Pope doesn't just make shit up, least not these days, anyway. Before you make blatantly ignorant comments or unfunny jokes like this again learn a little about religious politics within the church.

Didn't the pope just make up like 7 new sins?
QuoteAnyway most of these people in my experience have referred to themselves as "pagan" or something silly and needlessly broad like that, with no sense of the differences between germanic, celtic, and other tribal pagan beliefs.
I hate them. Lets burn 'em.

That is what I was referring too, but I didn't want to try to debate about it because I really don't care. Maybe him saying that pollution is a sin is to get closer to the "go green" crowd, or maybe he actually wants to help the enviornment.

3, actually, but whatever.

1. Bioethical violations (birth control)
2. Morally dubious experiments (stem cell research)
3. Drug use
4. Polluting the environment
5. Helping widen the divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty
Seven.

Several of the sins don't really seem like sins, but I guess you could consider the environment thing as that we believe the Earth was our gift from God so we should take care of it.
Of course, I didn't need the Pope to tell me to take care of the environment, but at least it'll make a nice bunch of people environmentally conscious.
Also that stem cell thing is bullshit in my opinion.

(7) Definition of this? Indirectly due to policies, or directly by breaking into some guy's house and stealing his stuff? The latter would be covered by Stealing-is-a-No-no, and the preceeding not really being something intentional (atleast hopefully). Although it could be argued that the latter is caused by the preceeding, aswell, but who cares.
(6) I love the way he claimed this to be a sin, despite them being the richest church.

(3) :x: Also, I hope this isn't some Scientology bullshit, and just "illicit" drug-use, atleast then he wouldn't be too fucked. Not like the pope would ever be extreme or anything. :)
(2) Because the Christian thing to do is let people suffer, because we can't do humane experiments on tissue samples. Oh joy! Amen!
(1) Because we're going to overwhelm those pesky protestants one day by sheer numbers! Every sperm is sacred, guise.

pseudo religious new age bullcrap = dumb
They can all go to hell. I believe joliet jane once called it "religion-lite", a very apt term.

Nah, this has actually techincally been a rule for quite a while (you know, "Your body is a temple, don't fuck with it", which means you can do bad drugs or get tattoos or piercings, not that I ever planned on getting a tattoo or a piercing), but I guess they decided to make it a deadly sin and all because... um... well...
Also, the whole excessive wealth thing has been a bad thing in the bible too, the whole "easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a greedy guy to get to heaven" sorta thing.
A lot of the new seven sins have been in the bible before, but I guess they decided it was time to modernize things, which, again, I really find to be bullshit, as the first seven were fine enough to live by.
Its just the embryonic stuff. There's much better stem cells to be had from adults, anyway.

Yes.
That was created specifically so catholics would fuck like bunnies and overrun the world.
Of course.
I'm actually quite surprised there wasn't an eight one added about being gay. Of course, then that would've annoyed me even more, but it's a moot point.

Pretty much, or do you have a logical reasonable-reason for the lack of Missile Defense policies?
To quote Pope Paul VI's Humanae Vitae ("Human Life"), where he reinforced the Church's teachings that it is intrinsically wrong to use contraceptions "to prevent new human beings from coming into exsistence":
QuoteContraception is "any action which, either in anticipation of the conjugal act [sexual intercourse], or in its accomplishment, or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render procreation impossible" (Humanae Vitae 14). This includes sterilization, condoms and other barrier methods, spermicides, coitus interruptus (withdrawal method), the Pill, and all other such methods.
It's rather amusing to think that this derives from an ancient Jewish law of fathering children for one’s dead brother's (with his wife), Gen. 38:8â€"10.

He should have made having AIDS a sin, and therefore being black a sin.
Now that I think about it, I suppose he's more pointing out some things that are sins to clarify as opposed to making new ones. My working definition of sin is anything that embraces the lie of disconnection. Stealing from your neighbor is a sin because it denies that his interests are in any way connected to your own interests. Christ not believing this would explain why he was so super-nice to everyone, he realized they were parts of him.
Quote from: ButtplugClock;1276272He should have made having AIDS a sin, and therefore being black a sin.
AIDS would've also made being being gay a sin, hence Freddie Mercury would be sinx2 for AIDS and gay which is completely unacceptable

embracing biblical text as truth is just as insane as believing uri geller.
Quote from: ouıqןɐ;1276522Christ not believing this would explain why he was so super-nice to everyone, he realized they were parts of him.
A more general term for sin is just disobedience to God. If God simply IS, then all things in His creation are judged using Him as the norm.
The thought of Christ living in all of us is an interesting thought. Before Christ's ascension, he was quoted in saying that he would send the Spirit onto the Earth to replace Him. Since the Trinity is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the entering of the Holy Spirit into the Apostles at Pentecost was the entering of God into each and every one of us. Any offense against your neighbor is an offense against God because God lives (or can live) inside of him.
That's where the cliche, "My body is a temple of the Holy Spirit" came form.
wait, isn't the catholic church superfluously wealthy? which means that the pope's new sin conflicts with his very career?

excessive wealth. The church needs that wealth... for... things...

Quote from: RomanCollarClock;1279198A more general term for sin is just disobedience to God. If God simply IS, then all things in His creation are judged using Him as the norm.
I get you, but that's where I disagree with the general interpretation conceptually. I don't think it's possible to disobey or anger God. Free will is just the ability to have perception of individual parts of God's manifestation, including a processing unit in which to make sense of these things that you have free range over. However, some information and ability is kept from us in order to limit us and allow us to learn. By interpreting systems as disconnected, we come to fear aspects of our own being and those aspects seem harsh. This is in fact because of our stance of disconnection. It's not that God's judging us, it's that we insist on doing things that make us wonder about our own worth and our own connection to the whole system, thus distancing ourselves from ourselves and digging ourselves further into a prison of lies.
QuoteThe thought of Christ living in all of us is an interesting thought. Before Christ's ascension, he was quoted in saying that he would send the Spirit onto the Earth to replace Him. But even beyond that, he said that what you have done unto the least you've done to me. That's during his own time, while he was still alive. What he's getting at, and I agree with him on this, is that we're all the same consciousness to begin with. The Holy Spirit, as a bringer of truth, heals the lie of disconnection. Without the Holy Spirit, the Son would never come to know the Father. The Holy Spirit comes to the Son in the form of knowledge that he is the Father. Once this knowledge is obtained the Christed Son inevitably attempts to spread this information to other (potential?) Sons, so that they might become Christed. Apparently that gets ya killed depending on when you do it, but it won't really matter because you'll know you're not going anywhere.
Quote from: Balsac the Jaws of Death;1280331There is a problem with this idea as there are many people who do horrible things that are clearly sinful, and it never affect their sense of self worth unluss to make it inflates their ego. Taught sociopathy.
Sure. Sociopaths don't just suspect that they're not connected to anything else, they're damn sure of it. They won't necessarily become self-conscious, but that kind of shit is certainly going to get them into trouble eventually or at the very least leave them feeling a bit lonely. There's still backlash, but that backlash is only negative if perceived from the limited viewpoint of post good/evil dichotomy Adam. In truth, the entire difference between Eden and not-Eden is the designation of some parts of creation as good and some parts of creation as evil, something Adam was able to do with the power of naming that God gave him. Physically, we're in Eden right now, but we're looking at it in a fucked up way that doesn't do the truth of the matter justice.
QuoteIf we are all part of the same conciousness then why create? Why have a world to exist in? Why spread this knowledge? If we all (or were) part of some superconsiousness then why break it apart? Why have conflict? Why bother existing?
Why do you talk to other people? Hell, you make up people to interact with while you're sleeping. Imagine how lonely it must get to be the only thing in the entire universe. If all you've got is your own mind, you're going to sit around and play with it, build more complex forms and express yourself in different ways. I think that that's essentially what the universe is, a mingling of manifest possibilities in a sea of infinite potential. If humans are made in the image of God, look to the driving motivations of human beings to see the driving motivations of God
We want to create. We all want to actively make some scenario in the world. I've yet to meet a person who didn't have the desire to do anything. People who just want to drink constantly are creating a specific chemical/psychological state in their bodies in order to facilitate the sort of filters they'd like to have on their perception of their experiences. Part of that is wanting to create more of ourselves, through breeding and also through verbal communication of ideas we identify with (the two of which are more similar than one might expect.
We also want to sustain the things we've created, most particularly our own bodies and those of our children, but also the products of our other creative endeavors.
We long for recognition of our existence, and for the company of others. We also like recognition of our ability to do things well by some standard that we find meaningful.
All those things depend on other people, specifically, other people like us. Different people with their own minds and opinions. Separate people. So we created separate bits of consciousness in order to fulfill our needs and explore our own nature.
QuoteWorking under Descartes (Aristotle) method:
We exist, therefore something did or didn't create us (ignoring all the potential semantic arguments of the term "creation")
If something did create us, then It must have some reason to do so
If it didn't have a reason to do so, then why bther creating
Without anything other than itself why bother thinking
Withought thought, It might as well not exist at all.
So either there is no creator, or there is a creator that has a reason to create
See reasons to create above.
QuoteThis idea seems to contradict the position that we are all part of some superconciousness, as it implies there was a superconciousness at some time before, which would aalso imply that before us it was whole. If something s whole, why bother breaking it up only to put it back together again and end up in the exact same position?
To say that there was anything before the creation of space-time is meaningless because it happens before/without/outside of time.
As to putting it back together again, we love that which we create. We're totally lost without it. I think separation always comes with some trouble, but the recombination is ecstatic, but once complete you're back at square one again. The thing is, the closer you get to recombination completing the less you'll care about the shit that happened while you were separated, because it won't seem real anymore. Think of it as a really high-tech video game that sucks you in emotionally but when you're done playing everything's just fine.

I make up people before I sleep too. It's not lonely, because you never have a bad argument and you can live in candy land for all you fucking care. It's wonderful.
