Title: Shading/Highlighting hair...
Post by: Airhead on April 08, 2008, 11:28:48 AM
I think the way i shade hair is basic, so it would be awesome if someone could give me tips for a realistic way on how to shade/highlight hair

A few examples of how i shade/highlight it:

Stop thinking of highlights in one blob and shadows in another blob.  There are a ton of surfaces in hair because of each strand.  You can think of it in clumps, but just think of what would be considered the underside and away from light part of hair and what part would be hit by light and why.  It can be made complex or simplified.  It is, however, not layers of - top middle bottom.

hair isn't a solid mass upon the head, it's lots of different strands and they all stem from a point. this doesn't mean you have to use different tones for every single hair on the head, but try to bear it in mind when drawing- and colouring it.

At the very least shade the individual clumps separately.

I'm not sure what's scarier; the part that he has his shirt half off (Which isn't really scary), or the fact that he looks like a Saiyan with a mustache.

I'll observe the way the hair is coloured and try to mimic that...
