Title: Sins of a Solar Empire
Post by: Blue on April 11, 2008, 05:34:43 PM
I know I'm late in the game here, forgive the pun, BUT this game is incredibly awesome!

Most of my COD4 clan started playing this on boring nights, and eventually they convinced me to buy it. It is impressively smooth and surprisingly fun to play.

If you havn't heard of it, it's an RTS on a solar-system scale. Zoom into a single ship, or out to the whole system. Imagine Supreme commander, but without the planet beneath the units... Oh and without the horrible lag. "Maps" load in under 1 second. The engine is simply brilliant. You can oversee battles of HUNDREDS of ships, without lag. The interface is incredibly intuitive.

The only thing the game lacks is a single player campaign. But who the fuck cares, prepare yourself to get lost in this game for a good 8 hours or more the day you get it. Well worth the $45. No cd-key or cd rom check used (which is really nice). I love it!

A screenshot doesn't do it justice...
...then again, neither does the trailer..

I'm running it at 1440 x 900 res, and it looks like EVE online, but in some ways better. And of course, with a shit-ton of ships. I'm getting an average of 60+fps w/ a 7600GT

And this one shows you how much fun it can be to just sit back and watch the battle :D

I've got the game. I played it for 3 hours one night and got my ass kicked because I couldn't figure out how to travel between stars (I know now), and haven't gotten around to spending another night playing it.

But it IS fun. They're just really long games.

I refuse To buy this game. So much of my life has been lost to Civ4 and its my understanding that this is just as good.

Are you talking about Eve's NEW graphics or its old graphics?

The most recent super-patch completely overhauled the game's graphics engine.
New graphics example 1, New graphics example 2, New graphics example 3, New graphics example 4

My first impression of this new game is Homeworld 2 on an even bigger scale.... which just radiates awesome. I'll probably be getting it after I get:

My own copy of Titan Quest w/ expansion
My own copy of Age of empires 3 w/ expansion.
Supreme Commander w/ expansion
My own copy of Medieval 2: Total War
Half life 1 w/ expansions

Then I'll get Sins of a Solar Empire

Then I'll get:

F.E.A.R. Expansions
Bioshock
System Shock 2

EDIT: I say "My own copy of" because I've been using my brother's copies of them and he's going back to college soon.
