Title: Fallout 3

So what do you guys think of what Bethesda is planning for the game? I hope they keep it almost the same. It sounded like most of it was, but it was going to have more of an action oriented combat, but I don't really know how combat will work. I heard there was also a first and third person view option and something like 300 different endings. I guess we'll just have to wait and find out.
What do you hope they add or don't add to the game? And what do you hope they kept in the new one?

well before stuff about this game started popping up i had no idea there ever was a Fallout game series. I mean this is such a big leap from the others, right? The earlier submissions into the series were like 2D and only on the PC, correct? I was never much of a PC gamer so that's why i think i never heard of it. But as it stands, this game is looking really great, with what little knowledge i possess about the series.
I read that as in Oblivion there were a large number of people but a small group of voice actors that in this it'll be reversed; as you'd guess in a post-apocayptic world there arn't that many people about but there are a lot more different voice actors. Also they said that like in Obvlivion, where you could pretty much point to anywhere on the map and within a small distance you could find something to do, they aimed to keep this the same in Fallout but they've a smaller overall area to play with.

No! I don't want a smaller area, I want more area!! And I would rather have more people and less voice actors, but hopefully it won't affect the game too much. I mean, you're supposed to be able to travel almost a whole continent! :(

i want to kill women and children, i want to be a drug addict, i want to pimp my spouse, i want to convince people to do all the work for me, i want to wipe out small peaceful towns, i don't want scalable enemies like in oblivion, i want to be tough as fuck and able to annihilate the weak.

i also want an engaging storyline lots of dark humor and the bloody mess trait.

I think the game play is kind of like Action/RPG stuff (since there is stats) and I don't know what they will do with actual combat. Supposedly, the game is about you going out to find your father after he leaves mysteriously and some mystery. Theres also supposed to be something like 300 different endings.

Fuck this game and fuck Bethesda for making it.

If it were called something other than 'Fallout 3' I wouldn't hate it as much. Most of the people who are so stoked for this game more than likely have never played/heard of the original. Sad but true. God damn shame I'll end up playing a heavily modified version so it doesn't feel like I playing with a handfull of wet shit for 16 hours.

Oblivion was really, really awful, so I hope this'll have a better feel and a be bit different though I am expecting it to be a tad similar, coming from the same makers. The fallout world looks absolutely stunning and deep and really ruined (in the sense that it's been ruined by the nuclear warfare or whatever the story was I dunno ;_; ). The RPG elements seem pretty sweet and making new weapons from scrap should be great. I imagine the story to be great aswell since I heard there'll be something like 100+ different endings.

It would seem sort of silly to have Fallout 3 be turn based and play like a Current-Gen game.

i think  this game will be good, it probably won't be on par with the first 2 fallouts but i'm 90% sure it will blow oblivion out of the water and i put like 40 hours into oblivion.

considering how much time i put in oblivion and how much i've wanted to check out fallout (i did try a year or so ago, but its RPG elements seem way too quaint to me now, way too repetitive for me to have any patience with it), this game is a must buy for me.

I may have been critiquing the combat and similar-ness to Oblivion about this game, but the combat in general doesn't look like something amazing but definetely better than Oblivion, so if that doesn't spoil the game for me I think this'll be a masterpiece. They've definetely nailed it with the world, atmosphere and story by the looks of it, and so much detail and all the nifty RPG elements makes me really want to pick this game up on the PC tomorrow (feels good to be in the US before a big game comes out), though I really need to get through Far Cry 2 and Fable II before diving into this. I'll wait for some reviews to justify my decision but

it's VATS, the vault-tec assisted targeting system.

also 10 hours into the game, almost done working on moira's book, at which point i'll get back to the main quest for a little while. i hate moira so much, she sounds like sarah palin.

i also wandered over to tenpenny towers and killed roy phillips and his followers for 700 caps gave me negative karma but i can use it because i beat mr. burke to death with a lead pipe, he's the guy who hires you to blow up megaton.

it has to do with it because it's another perspective qsdfdsf
in fallout 1/2 VATS didn't really affect your aiming, since you could only shoot at your opponent (not using VATS) if you actually clicked on him. With Fallout 3, you can shoot all you want but you won't hit your enemy if you're aiming at the building right next to him.

the game is great, i really liked the original fallout games and i think this is a fairly good entry in the franchise, is the writing as good, no, is the gameplay as in depth as the originals, no, is it a good post-apocalyptic game with an intriguing open ended storyline based on moral choices, yes.

it is fallout, maybe not a true sequel, but it is fallout and it is a good game deserving of the praise it has been getting.

Oblivion is the perfect proof that people don't know what the fuck they are talking about.

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/index.php?sid=76535491c71c59178f4537aec1888115

Proper opinions, from people who actually know shit about Fallout 1&2; not just people jumping on the Bethesda bandwagon because of Oblivion. It might be a perfectly fine game in it's own merit, not going to argue that, but to say that Bethesda could ever pull off something like Fallout 1&2 in terms of atmosphere, wit, humour and writing is.. laughable. Look at Oblivion. Look at Morrowind.

I never said it's shit because it's main stream. It's shit because it's Oblivion+Fallout just to get some sales. Fallout 1 and 2 were about as main stream as it got back in the late 90s, yet they were amazing. I hate This game and I hate bethesda for making subpar games a norm instead of an exception in the gaming industry. Bethesda and EA are raping the life out of the entire industry with greed.

They make good games every four or so years, then continue to fuck them up with thousands of expansion packs, spin offs, sequels, etc until the game has lost all money-making ability. They then fire or lay the developers off who worked on said games. That's the exact opposite of a 'good' VG company.

I hope this speeds up greatly at one point cause this is going to take forever. I'll leave it on overnight but I'm not even sure if it'll be done then and it might stop downloading suddenly during the night.

And trust me, waking up to see if the game's done and seeing that it's not downloading anymore and is at like, 20%, isn't nice at all.

11% at 62 KB/s

not at all. The percentages are really balanced (as in you'll damn the fucking system because getting close enough without getting detected is pretty hard), and even if you have like 89% chance to hit stuff, you'll actually miss from time to time (which will make you damn the system again)

:wiebel:

but shooting people right in the face with a combat shotgun never gets old. Fatal critical hits add to the death animation. Last time, the skull and a chunk of the spinal cord were ripped off the torso. The fun part is that it was actually the skull and a piece of the spinal cord. As in without flesh.

almost there!

oh and I restarted and made my charisma and speech through the roof. It's absolutely worth it. I highly recommend getting high charisma, speech lockpicking and medicines at the start of the game. The other skills really don't matter much at the beginning. Then start to upgrade whatever you want, together with repair.

Actually I hardly ever use VATs.
Only when Im standing next to them is it ever any good and even then it just takes for ages to go through...
You fight super mutants (alot) and when you use VATS with super shotgun (phat dammage) you press their head 3 times in vats. Slow motion, you shoot them three times in the face, their hp goes down 1/3.

Whilst if you use close combat you do the same dammage but you die abit more dammage (you move faster in VATS) but you can paralyze their limbs (their gun arm etc) with it. (you can with firearms aswell but you always aim for the head then)
VATs works as a cheat when using melee, you hit 3 hits in the time it would take to do 1½ hit normally.

It's not amazing but its nice and adds a quick way to kill small groups out fast.
Fighting big groups (hardly ever) makes VATS worthless (unless you use explosives in which it rocks).

The story is actually much better than in Oblivion so thats a plus.
But I have not found any amazing side mission as of yet.
Oblivion had that painting quest, dream quest and assasins guild quest which all three made the game go from 4.5/10 to 8.5/10 in my book.
Haven't found such in this game yet.
I have found vampires but theyre not even half as cool as you'd think so I made them good, soothed things over with the village who had a problem with them and then I killed them all (including village).

Yeah i just watched a guide that said that charisma and that skill that helps you lockpick etc. better aren't that useful and you should focus on stength and endurance,

but i'll do my best to balance it out, putting a tiny bit more in charisma and that lockpicking skill

oh and is luck really that useless?

Im addicted to seeing everything there is in a game so I spread out my points everywere. I have like 17-21 in every weapon skill and 65-75 in lockpicking, sneaking, medecine and computers.
I just wanna check everything out.
Speech is nice aswell.
Oh and I got 50 in explosives because its just overpowered :D
Im running around with a small arsenal of weapons and I hardly use everything ever. (sniper actually sucks which makes me sad...)

Luck?
It makes VAT/Crit chances happen more often I believe
Doesnt really matter but crits are hilarious because they tear shit up.

the guide obviously is shit then. speech + charisma helps you out loads when doing quests, both earning you more money and info. lockpicking is pretty damn helpful for opening ammunition boxes and the likes.

I would rank the most needed skills as following

Lockpicking ; Alot of locks and you get EXP for opening them
Science; Alot of computers and you get EXP for opening them
Speech; Not half as many speech oppurtinities but you get EXP and story for doing them.

I dont actually have all the speech since Im maxing out lockpick, science and repairs (repair is good for disarming stuff and gives you exp aswell) and explosives (same as repair but at harder traps).

Don't uppgrade any guns/arms skills (but explosives) since youll easily kill anything anyway if you play on normal. Though there are hard parts so don't doupt that, but playing on hard isnt fun or challanging just stupid since it takes forever to kill anything.

48%.

This better speed up cause it won't be done overnight if it's still this slow that's for sure.

Cause if I'm not wrong, downloads always make you download the most important and biggest part of the download first, which is why the first few percentages go slowly, but once those are done, the rest should go by pretty swiftly.

Or not?
Title: Fallout 3
Post by: Heliopios on November 09, 2008, 04:33:39 PM
Has it been downloading at a constant rate? It's only about 6 GB, so going at 60-70 KB/s

6,000,000,000 Bytes/ 70,000 Bytes/s = 85714 seconds (roughly)

85714 seconds/60 = 1428 Minutes

1428 Minutes/60 = 23.8 Hours

Plus or minus some time because I'm a lazy ass that doesn't round all the way to the billionths and fluctuating Download speeds, means your download should've been done somewhere between 15-30 hours into it. Not days as it's taking you so far.
Title: Fallout 3
Post by: salt on November 09, 2008, 04:45:17 PM
Well it's been downloading at 20-70 KB/s. It's been jumping all the time. You gotta take some hours off because when I left it on overnight, for some reason, some thing started happening to my computer and it just stopped downloading for about 5-6 hours, then I restarted it at 8am this morning and it's been downloading since.

It's about to hit 50% at 30 KB/s. If it keeps downloading overnight (9 hours-ish), it could be done sometime tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

oh and there is the chance that it'll speed up.

EDIT:

YEAHHH 50%!!!!

I finally played some of this a tiny bit this morning. Though it wasn't enough to give a full opinion on the game, of course, I loved what I did get to see. Dunno if this count as spoilers or not but either way:

Got up to the part in Vault 101 where I just left my birthday party and arrived at the nuclear reactor. Everything's flowed smoothy and well. I like my dad a lot. He looks bright and kind, and well, is rather kind actually. I love how so far, everything's been more of a social aspect. I had to stand around at the party, talk, and the dialogue was great and funny. Those bullies were really mean! ;_;

I'm running this on High pretty well so ye pretty happy about that. I love the atmosphere and all so far so I think I'll come to like this game a lot. Glad I bought it.

So I looked up the numbers:

Fallout 1
12 small, 3 big, 10 energy, 12 melee, 6 explosive
Total: 43

Fallout 2
29 small, 8 big, 21 energy, 19 melee, 7 explosive
Total: 84
(Some are exactly taken from Fallout 1)

New in Fallout 2
16 small, 5 big, 11 energy, 7 melee, 1 explosive
Total: 40

Fallout 3
24 small, 10 big, 12 energy, 32 melee, 6 explosive, 7 custom
Total: 91
(Some are based on previous fallout, but none exact)

Also, Fallout 3 has a ridiculously huge number of armor compared to Fallout 1 or 2. No info on any other matter though.

Except you should roughly half these numbers, because a good chunk are just 'Specially-named-gun-that's-a-bit-better-than-normal'.

Otherwise, you've skimped out on a few of Fallout 2's extra bunch, Small Guns is in the thirties if you're counting 'duplicates'.

Still, impressed that they have three base pistol types.

Edit: Double-checking, Fallout 3 has just a little less than Fallout 2 (Including duplicates), but 3 has less 'unique base' weapons, so bleh.

In Fallout 2 the duplicate guns I subtracted were exactly like the gun that was duplicate.
If something has a similar name, but different stats, then its a different gun.
I can't be 100% sure about duplicates though.

And in Fallout 2 if you include duplicate type guns you'd still have a total of only 90 (only 6).

I'm not sure what gave you the idea that Fallout 2 had so many more guns than Fallout 3. They have basically the same amount.

Original->Xbox360 -> PC -> Ps3

I don't give a fuck about that. I saw a side-by-side comparison and there was barely a difference between 360 and the PS3.

Now that the PS3's here I'm startin' to play it. Since I'm a goody two-shoes type of RPGer, I've already turned Burke in and later shot him dead before he got to the sheriff.

I killed everyone in Big Town for supplies, weapons etc. and then cut all of their limbs (well at least their arms, legs and head) off with a knife. I tend to do this with many bodies. I think i'm a bit disturbed.

oh and super mutants are so funny and cute but hard to kill!

In Arefu now, some shit's bout to go down.

I was weighing the cost/benefit of keeping him alive and not getting his stuff for free, I decided to be the ultimate goody two-shoes. I do like how you can carry over your weight, it just makes you slow as hell. I raided the whole Super Duper Mart of supplies and just limped all the way back to Megaton to sell it.

Although, before that I got killed by mercenaries that I didn't bump into the second time. I guess I already have a price on my head for killing Burke.

Wait, he has a son?
Well I disarmed it with my new level. Also made it so I could break into stronger locks. I was going to the memorial to do the marlock sidequest for Moria but then I got intterrupted by the kid that brings you to the fireant infested town so now I'm caught in another sidequest.

I liked how if you got your radiation poisoning to 600 you get mutated when she heals you. I also loved the chat option "Sometimes, when I'm alone, I can hear my genes crying."

I accidentally told Moira I didn't want to do anymore research after chapter 2 (it was a speech challenge and I had 100% so I didn't actually read the damn thing :c), and now I'm sad.

if you first talk to Burke, you'll only get the option to rat out Burke to Simms (you can still answer "I'm just kidding" the second line, but then it's serious). Then Simms and you go to the bar to arrest him.
draw fast and you'll be able to kill Burke before he kills Simms

I've been playing the game now since I just got it, so let's have the topic resume because now I can fit in!

Anyway, the People's Republic blah blah blah radio station is hilarious.  I had to pause the game to burst into laughter when she said "Bling our boys home before it's too rate."

Also, I've encountered a bug.  On my compass (in the lower-left), there's a red enemy bar to the right of the center that is stuck there permanently and doesn't show any other person indications on it, so I can't see where an enemy nearby is.  Arrows and quest markers still show up, but the people markers don't.

Also, I've had that NPC teleport glitch occur several times as well.  I was fighting the queen ant when, all of a sudden, she teleported into my face and scared the shit out of me.
Also, I could've gotten Jericho as a party member had I not been such a good two-shoes (and still am).

Got it for Christmas, beat it earlier tonight and have proceeded to mod the fuck out of it. Spoilers ahead.

Lesse:

Advanced combat mod: a mod that makes combat more realistic, but works both ways i e it affects YOU as well as your enemies. Head injuries now cause your enemy to be very inaccurate with their fire, I think arm injuries do too. Torso injuries cause them to stumble while walking. Leg injuries cause your opponent to move at %50 speed which is very useful when you're retreating or getting attacked by very fast opponents like those deathclaws or whatever they're called.

Game ending mod: lets you play on after you've beaten the main quest. You can also go back to vault 101. Nothing really there though.

Potomac river is now clean

Megaton house expansion: adds an entire new floor to your house with some cool shit added in, a bunch of ammo and stuff is in there

New power armor: found this mod for hellfire power armor, is a bit stronger than normal power armor and gives better bonuses

Level cap removed: removes level cap and lets you level past 20

Skills past 100: lets you raise your skills past 100 which is pretty much an essential mod if you get the one above

perks mod: adds 40 new perks, some of them are pretty cool

1911 pistol: I have a hard-on for 1911s so I found a mod that adds one, Moira sells them in Megaton

Increased enemy spawns: this one is nuts, basically whenever you would normally run into any given group of enemies, there's simply more of them. Makes the game feel a bit more realistic but also makes it more difficult. I have been wandering around in the wastelands and run into a patrol of like 10-15 Enclave soldiers in full power armor with laser rifles and plasma rifles. Coupled with playing on very hard, it can get pretty intense.

If anyone wants help modding, PM me or something and I can help walk you through/ recommend some good mods.

yeah and check this shit out

Cherry's ref id is 2AE22, so the command is player.moveto 2AE22

You could of just fast traveled to Rivet City. :p

p.s. I got the console to work, yay
The thing for me during that mission, I was going to rivet city, so I thought I might as well let her tag along. I didn't think there'd be a raider compound and like 10 super mutants along the way.

Also: console commands do not help those who actually have this game on a console.

That sucks, this is completely a PC-orientated game, because of the mods that fix everything and debugging.

Yeah, but I didn't trust my computer's capabilities, I didn't know of the bugs. I thought "why risk subpar performance?"

Thanks a bunch :D
I would have fast traveled, but it's as Marlin said.  I was on my way to Rivet City so I figured "Why not let her tag along?"
I lost her after I told her to wait in a building to fight four Super Mutants, five Super Mutant Brutes, and one Super Mutant Master.

Turns out Cherry disappeared into a huge Super Mutant gang and died, so once I deal with them I'ma use the revive cheat.
The way I look at it, it's not actually cheating since I was screwed over by bugs in the first place.

Y'know what I always think is crazy, that raiders with launchers seem to always have impeccable accuracy.

I'm wondering if getting the Explorer perk once I reach lvl 20 will only cheapen the experience of finding places, cause I'm debating whether I should get that as the last perk.

I love how, if you convince her to go with you, Dukov will immediately talk to you as to where Cherry had gone, even if she's standing right next to you.

Yeah, I found that funny as well.

Also, what the fuck!  The revive command isn't working!
Never mind.

Another bug with Cherry.
I stopped into this shack called Boats and Bait or something of the like.  When I exit, I need to go past a sign.  As soon as Cherry reaches the sign or tries to run past it, she all of a sudden turns around and runs straight into the water and goes out fifty feet in it.
God dammit.

EDIT::
Got her out, finally.  Only took 7 tries.

fuck why didn't I think of that :(

I was stuck once after sitting down at the chair in Leo's office in the Water Purification Plant. Everytime I tried to move (after getting up of course gggdf), my screen went into first person for 10 seconds, and I was unable to mouselook. Then it reverts back and I'm still stuck. Repeat.

I ended up loading a previous save :(

Here are most of the mods I recommended earlier apart from a few gun mods which add a few old guns I like.

well actually it's 95 but I always carry my vault repair suit with me which is +5 repair.

I just invested 38 skillpoints into small arms, and I hate myself for not upgrading it earlier.

Quote from: Marlix Wright;1484961For some reason I've yet to find Tenpenny Tower, even though I've searched almost every inch southwest of Megaton.

Mr. Bad dude would have marked it on the map for you if you played along and said you would have blown up the nuke in Megaton.

But assuming you're past that already, if you look at the map and see the faint, faint grid on there, it's located at one square up from the bottom of the map, and 5 squares from the left, almost right at that intersection. It's a tall, tall apartment building in the middle of nowhere, so you'll more than likely see it if you're anywhere close to the area.

Quote from: William Murray;1484974The problem is that nowadays every fucking company wants to release the game as soon as possible and seem to throw quality assurance and beta testing out the window and say "Oh, we'll release a patch.
Eventually.
Maybe."

Games will always have bugs (unless you're talking tiny flash games or mobile games). They've gotten too big for every bug to possibly be accounted for and fixed in any reasonable amount of time. Yeah, NES and SNES games didn't have bugs all that often, but that's because they weren't terribly complicated, had much smaller code bases, and could be adequately debugged in a reasonable time. But we're past that, and you're just going to have to accept that all games now will have bugs, unless you want to accept a 10 year development cycle for every single game.

Just don't support the games that have so many bugs that ruin the experience.

Bethesda has some of those bugs in each of their games (that nearly ruin the experience), usually, but that's also because the scope of their games are sooooo damn big, it's kinda hard for them not to. Personally, I find their games to be so amazing that I don't mind that.

And I doubt you've seen a game where QA was 'thrown out the window', except the rare rare games like Superman 64 or Big Rigs. There's pretty much no console game that hasn't had a decent amount of QA, because if they didn't, they wouldn't pass certification. The Big Three are pretty strict about the standards games have to abide by in order to be released on their system (not in quality, but in how it runs and works in specific circumstances), so at the very least that shit has to be caught and taken care of.

Well, I'm in a fight currently with a Super Mutant Brute.  I could have sworn all my bullets were going right through him, but maybe I was missing all my shots.
Then I shoot at him with an assault rifle a foot away, and all my bullets went through him.

I noticed that sometimes the hitbox messes up and it only becomes a point near the middle of the enemies. It happens to some glowing ones I've faced after I quickloaded near them.
