Alright, so there's a dude in my graphic design and illustration class named Fernandooo. Anyways, he's really good with Adobe Illustrator and comes up with all this cool shit. I first noticed the oddities when he was showing an assignment to my teacher. I noticed it was pixelated when he zoomed in, and since it's a vector program that's... odd, unless he was putting it online for some reason. Also, it was named Blablabla_by_Blablabla, the second being a person's online name that was not his. Also, it was saved in his Research folder on his flash drive.
Alright alright, flash forward, and skip a few weird things, I see him open up a thing from his Flash drive, and start to trace it in Illustrator. The next day, he turns in almost the same fucking image as the one he was tracing for the assignment. Not only that, he opens the original and claims he made that too. Well since then I've found the damned thing on somebody else's Deviantart, as well as two other Illustrations he stole from another artists. What should I do about this? I don't really want to talk to him about it, because there'd be no easy way to say that I've been covering your tracks and you're a fucking thief. But also if I tell my teachers he will be expelled from College, and it may ruin his whole life. What the fuck.
Just let him do what he wants
Yeah, expell him, and teach him how to respect copyrights.
I feel no sympathy for him really.
Quote from: ampm;1306111Just let him do what he wants
Dude it's fucking bullshit. You should see the praise this kid gets for shit that he stole. On the last day of class my graphics teacher is talking to the class looking at a stolen piece of his saying, "You could leave College right now and go into graphic design, you're that good." I was so pissed...
Tell it to everybody, damn it.
Make an intricate and intelligent plan that sabotages and embarrasses him in front of the whole class.
Since it seems everyone thinks he's so good at it you should get the teacher to get the kid to teach the class on how he does it.
Send an anonymous letter/e-mail to the teacher with links and proof?
I understand that you don't want a guilt trip for getting him kicked out, but some have to learn the hard way that you can't cheat your way through school.
But do it as Scarecrow said, use an anonymous email.
Just boot him out quietly and peacefully. He should learn, but there's no need for extra embarrassment.
Cheating would've been one thing, that's just answers. He's taking credit for someone else's work. God damnit.
Stop feeling that undeserved "pity" for him and focus that energy elsewhere, like, say, getting his ass in trouble for that shit.
We don't need another eBaum-drama in the future.
Is his line of study in the field of Art, or elsewhere? If it's art, then get him expelled. If it's just a course, then request that they be lenient and just fail him in the course or such. They'd probably be decent enough not to take it further, unless you have really shitty teachers.
Yeah, I'd feel bad for getting him expelled from college and possibly ruining his life, but at the same time he's stealing other people's creative work and claiming it as his own.
When he's showing the teacher his work, you could always say a quick comment like "Wow, that style is completely different from your last work" or something.
He deserves to be expelled. I don't see what you're feeling guilty about. Yes, you should tell whats going on.
No sympathy for the sinner. Flush him out.
One way is maybe you can make something really good and post it on a site and maybe somehow get him to see it so he'll trace it, then make sure to show your work first before his so that he'll either have to refuse to show his work or be exposed.
Talk to him, it's not easy but do it, and warn him
Public humiliation all the way.
it's not against the rules if you don't get caught
he got caught

Shut up, Fernando.
Quote from: Coal;1306148No, really, warn him, be serious
If FU warns him first, the kid will have time to make it seem like the claim has no base. He may beat FU to the teacher to tell him/her that FU has it out for him, and is creating fake deviantart pages to get him in trouble on purpose. If FU goes straight to the teacher, the kid is put on the spot and is unable to formulate ideas like that as effectively. The kid might just tell the teacher that FU is harassing him.
Yeah, I feel like I should warn him.
Art is his field, and the thing is he's actually good at doing shit at Illustrator. At least, fairly good. His concepts just don't seem to be in line, so he steals them from other people. But yeah, I feel like I should warn him before getting him expelled.
Man, you guys are harsh mofo's.
If he cant actually make art why are you sparing him?
Quote from: Flux;1306151If FU warns him first, the kid will have time to make it seem like the claim has no base. I'm not gonna' lie, one of the reasons I don't want to tell him is I don't want to give him a chance to make up some bullshit to explain himself. We had an assignment to make a brochure for a company, and he turned in one and the teacher said, "Yeah, but this is old, right?" Turns out he turned in a two-year old brochure made by someone else that is used in a department on our campus. However, he managed to convince the teacher that, "he was just showing her that example to contrast with what he's going to do to change it." B'okaaay Fernando.
Boomstick, that was hilarious.
Can he kill you if he knows you have it out for him?
I would suggest warning him, but he may turn it around and try to get you expelled, so when push comes to shove, you might just have to tell the teacher.
If you really feel bad about it, you could always request that the teacher warn Fernando himself that he knows and that Fernando is under threat if he keeps it up, but I'm not so sure the teacher would be willing to do that.
Also, if you tell the teacher, make sure you have proof, first.
Quote from: F U Clock;1306155I'm not gonna' lie, one of the reasons I don't want to tell him is I don't want to give him a chance to make up some bullshit to explain himself.
And believe me, he
will. Maybe you should tell the teacher, but insist to him/her that you think he should be harshly warned and credit for the assignments he stole should be taken away, but you don't think it's necessary to expel him. There's a slight chance the teacher might do just that.

Doing nothing about it is a very, very bad idea. If he keeps this up in the job world, he could end up with severe legal action on himself. Having it exposed while he's still young gives him the opportunity to get back on his feet later.

Not doing anything means that he'll get away with it, that will not do. So the only other option is some sort of anonymous warning. You could also just make him do said copyrighted work again.

He didn't get away with it if he got caught
It sucks to think that you may get him expelled, but fuck man, plagiarism is just unacceptable. It's unfair to everyone whom is actually working hard to earn the grades that they earn. There are too many fucking cheaters at school.
Quote from: Coal;1306185He didn't get away with it if he got caught
Uh.. No? He'll get away with it if FU doesn't do something about it. The very definition of getting away with something is that you won't get into any trouble over it.
What's weird is I don't really care if someone plagiarizes a paper. If I found out I'd let that slide easy, unless I really hated the douchebag doing it. But with art... I guess I don't really see someone's individual paper as being held up as particularly impressive, whereas with art you can get so much recognition within the school for shit that's not yours.
Graphic art is no different than a story or an essay. Plagiarizers deserve death.
I say make it public and simply reject his works, in that matter he will realize his mistake and be humiliated bout it. Sometimes it is the best way to make them see the right way.
Expelling is just to plainly dry.

That would also have to do with personal perspectives, I think. Since you're interested in art, and not so much in "essay writing", amirite?
But if you wrote an awesome essay and someone Copy-pasted it and then got their own grade based on your work, then damn straight you'd be pissed.

Claiming credit for a work you did not do and at the same time surpassing others with this stolen work is not trivial.
First of, this will greatly boost his grades and give him an unfair advantage over others in a market that is rather slim as-is. Thus causing someone more deserving to be out of a job.
Secondly, as stated before, this is something that will turn into a huge deal when he actually moves on. Either in the form of incompetence or continued plagiarism. In either case, what the fuck is he doing on that workforce?
Lastly, he obviously doesn't care about the fact that plagiarism is wrong, he doesn't have much of a moral highground to stand on to complain about being snitched on.
Just get his ass thrown out. Stop feeling sorry for people who don't deserve it.

Stealing is wrong.
I have an art student who traced armadillos for his entry to the Texas rodeo art contest. I discretely pulled him aside and warned him about plagiarism, he pretended to heed, and ended up winning second place in the region with the same drawing he said he was going to get rid of.
I exposed him and he had his award revoked. The school reprimanded him and revoked his recess for two weeks while his parents freaked shit on me for upsetting him.
Moral, bust him early and have him penalized or it'll be worse later. Can you imagine him losing his diploma?
Well, telling him risks your own credibility, so don't tell him.
Telling the teacher yourself might create suspicion and unwanted tension, so the direct approach would be a last resort UNLESS you have absolute proof.
I would suggest starting with a anonymous email.
I think a big problem though may be the "incompetence" of the teacher, since if he were really skilled at what he was teaching, he probably would have been able to spot these discrepancies, though I know that not all teachers are actually experts at what they teach so I don't want to jump to conclusions.
He's gonna pay now or he's gonna pay later.
I'd say anonymous email, link to deviantart pages.
Put a note in his bag or desk or where ever, saying "I know your are stealing. You will be expelled."

Warning still sounds like a good idea first. He clearly doesn't seem to think that cutting corners for some extra spare time will ever have consequences.
I once did a group project with someone for a large research paper. We both did half, and I said I'd would edit them together. I found out I had to change 60% of his because it was plagiarized verbatim. I fixed it all and turned it in, but I never confronted him about it. I actually do believe he thought it was okay to do it! And he was older, too.

You should send him little "things" to tell him you know. Psych him out. Like e-mails from IknowEverything@gmail.com (IknowEverything@gmail.com) and then get you and a couple of friends from that class to start talking to him about deviantArt. You should all say things like "Hey! Have you ever seen deviantArt? You should go there. You seem like your work would... fit right in." and "That picture looks even better than some of (insert the true artist's name of recent picture) stuff." All sorts of shit just to fuck with him. Then, you should see if you can get him to copy some of YOUR work. Then, prepare that smae piece, and showcase yours right after him. "Uhh, yeah. I actually had a very similar piece..." You can prove its yours by logging into your deivantArt. But go with that first part for a while. Bonus points if the guy doesn't know your friends that are helping you.

I don't want to tell him, because he'll probably just get sneakier about stealing shit. The only way I found the images I did was because I saw their filenames which he I'm a edgy teenly kept the same when he downloaded them. He also seems good at BSing.
Also, I'll tell my graphics teacher because I think she loves him and she'll probably bury the issue from other teacher, but punish him a decent bit (without expelling him) and stop acting like he's the God of graphic art. And just to clarify, he's not just tracing things, he's also outright stealing. How the hell does letting him get off with stealing graphics help him develop as a graphic artist? If anything, it tells him that he can get away with shit like that and that he doesn't have to do his own work. If he gets caught, he'll think "Damn, I have to get my shit together and start doing my own work."
I don't think he'll get expelled for this. I doubt teacher is going to instantly lose all faith in him and send him away. She'll give him some lenience, especially if she thinks he has talent.
dont feel remorse for ruining his life i mean what the fuck is he gonna do if he gets a job as a graphic designer anyway? his boss is gonna want specifics and he cant do it because he just steals shit
can his ass
miraclefruit makes a pretty good point
Quote from: F U Clock;1306729Hmmm... Well I think I might send an anonymous e-mail to my graphics teacher. This may bring the best of both worlds.
This exact image (http://www.pauloarraiano.com/images/illustration_commercial/chupachups_02.gif) was in his final portfolio for illustration, taken from this artist's site: http://www.pauloarraiano.com/ Fuckin' BS.
And yes, I WILL TAKE HIM DOOOWN!
Sounds good. Be sure to include concrete undeniable proof he stole the stuff.
Here is what you should do exactly give him a fair warning to stop what he is doing and do the shit himself or you will rat on him. If he continues then tell on him and he deserves to be ruined. :tophat:

I do cheat my way around things and make half-assed Flash animations to get really good non computer related grades, but I don't usually plagiarize. However, particularly for subjects I don't care about, I tend to like to find the easy way out.

and you're in high school
I was going to say don't get him expelled, but then again I would never do that so go ahead and tell the professor I guess.
i think he'll pay the price when he has an actual job and is trying to pull that shit off
I have a B in art because i dont show up and now i have to work my way up to the truly easy A that it is
Rat him out it will be funny but do it secret so you don't look like a faggot.
i am so looking forward to the outcome of this
Quote from: F U Clock;1306114Dude it's fucking bullshit. You should see the praise this kid gets for shit that he stole. On the last day of class my graphics teacher is talking to the class looking at a stolen piece of his saying, "You could leave College right now and go into graphic design, you're that good." I was so pissed...
He'll get his.
Quote from: ampm;1306936He'll get his.
Ok yeah I didn't see that part of the thread.
Crush the asshole FU.
Also he isn't even that good at placing shit, his work is so cluttered.

Why speak to him?
1. Blackmail him
2. Get sexual favors
3. Get money
4. release it anyway and ruin his cheating efforts along with his future.
5. ???
6. Profit!
Sorry, I just had to. Seriously though, DO IT DO IT DO IT!
Hey, you want people like that doing jobs for you, but making shitty results, simply because they haven't studied right?
Give him the justice he deserves.

Well then the other guy could just doodle some other shit and then say that HE was taking the art. That would get him in trouble.

Find out what Fernando is stealing next.
Then show the teacher before he hands it in without Fernando knowing, going to the actual artist's website, and tell her how cool it is.
Then, when Fernandoooooooo hands it in, she'll be all "Wait what?"
spare the rod, use the fucking sledgehammer
also an Idea would be to make a project about the stolen work of fernando
god just send the teacher an anonymus email.

People who blackmail people end up dying. That is one of the few things I learned from detective dramas.

If you could somehow find out what he was going to steal, this would be the best idea. Public humiliation that
he reaps upon himself.
Then have a folder prepare with samples and evidence to present to the teacher immediately after class to add a big "
." to this fine day.
Just keep it simple and tell the teacher that you've seen him copying, and she/he should have a word with him.
The longer you leave it the worse it'll be because he wont be able to resubmit any of the work.

Oh damn, must have missed that part. Yeah, the dilema's much more clear now. Still though, a typed note telling the kid to stop stealing should shake him up a bit to stop.
hey here's an idea. contact the people he stole from and let them fight it out.

I thought of that too, but it's quite likely that he'll just find other resources.

If he was in my class I would point it out, of course, I thought we were talking about the guy in FU's.
edit: geez, I'm an idiot. I
would mind if someone put my stuff on Newgrounds again, yeah, but I don't think it's comparable to this: in this situation the artist this student is ripping off doesn't even know about it, and never will. It would only be comparable if this student was stealing FU's artwork.
I think people are overreacting, cheats never prosper and if he gets a good grade then so what? He will either be a success of his own merit or, more likely, will fail because he's no good. Ratting him out to the teacher is just a jerky thing to do, there's no victim except himself. It's not your moral obligation to get involved in something like this.

Saying that the artist will never find out is bullshit, because any one of us could tell him at any point. If he gets a good grade, that just tells him that what he's doing is okay, and that he can keep doing it all he wants. He's going to keep stealing work if he doesn't learn that it's wrong.
he can't steal people's work forever, that's exactly what I'm saying.
Quote from: F U Clock;1306108Alright, so there's a dude in my graphic design and illustration class named Fernandooo.
Tell that bitch to get out, that'll show him fot stealing other people good/bad work.
I actually like the idea of alerting the artist and giving him either Fernando's e-mail or my teacher's. I have no like, pictures of his work, but I could let him know, then it'd be up to him.

Do you know the other people's Deviant accounts though? Since she's so proud of her student, show him the punishment he gets in college for stealing it. Just send her an anonymous email of the links. If she's so proud thinking it's his work, she'll recognize it and he'll get the punishment.

Yeah I know I'm just saying I don't necessarily want to be the one who has to deal with the moral issue of contacting the teacher, so I could just let the artist who made the work decide what to do. Then again, it'd still be me contacting the artist, so I should just cut out the middle man and tell her myself. But whoever said I had to behave rationally.
B TO THE L BLACKMAIL HIS ASS!
