TOKYO (Reuters) - Over 33,000 people took their lives in Japan last year, topping 30,000 for the tenth consecutive year despite a government campaign to reduce what is one of the highest suicide rates in the world.
A report issued by the National Police Agency on Thursday showed that 33,093 people killed themselves in Japan in 2007 -- the second-largest number on record after 34,427 in 2003 -- mostly because of debt, family problems, depression and other health issues.
There was also a leap in the number of suicides involving toxic hydrogen sulphide gas made from household detergents, a previously obscure method that is spreading rapidly as Internet messages tell victims how to produce the poison at home.

That's a good point. Still, considering suicide as a consequence of a psychiatric disease (depression) i'd think there are different factors on underdeveloped and developed countries. Also, some populations tend to suffer these conditions because there are genetical factors. Take for example Russia, who has the number one rate of suicide: they are not as developed as a lot other countries, part of the population is still struggling for basic needs, what would be the explanation of their high rate of suicide?
Here comes the main variable, who has more population and judging the quantity of people living in certain country how many of them commit suicide? It's not the same that half the people living in Monaco kill themselves than 30,000 people killing themselves in Japan.

-I did not read the text book
-I drew a dinosaur instead of taking notes
if you know better than me all you have to do is to say so and offer a better answer, but I'm not going to dick around with you excavating a point from your posts and comparing the scraps of knowledge we've picked up from wherethefuckever because it's hardly a matter of debate and if anybody actually wanted a solid answer it wouldn't be a feat to find a scholarly publication on the subject

A girl who left our school a year ago and has been living in Tokyo, Japan ever since came back to visit today.
I asked one of her close friends if any of the girl's friends had commited suicide in her school.
Funnily enough, her friend told me some considered and many cut themselves.
