Title: Weird email from "me"
Post by: AlbinoClock on July 10, 2008, 01:03:25 PM
Yeah, so, apparently a mass mail got sent out that appears to come from my email address. I didn't write or send this. I'm assuming it came from the Internet Cult server because my email is set as the admin's email.

Just thought I'd let y'all know.

Quote from: TrickyClock;1359864so wait, what did this thing do?

DOS attack means that something tries to access the same server millions/billions of times, essentially freezing access to anyone. It uses up all the bandwidth.

So Albino and all those alts did it, as well as rocketfetus?

Strange. It doesn't seem very albino-like, unless he finally just got fed up with this place.

Essentially :-)

A little more on that, a dDOS attack is called a Direct Denial of Service attack. Its a port flooder that fills all the available spots for a website's outbound and inbound traffic with a computer ping. Basically making the site think there are Millions *not Billions theres not enough ports or threads* of people trying to connect. Ultimatly the goal is not to waste bandwidth cause then you would use a Bandwidth Killer *loading multiple small images fairly fast multiple times over a vast amount of speed for X time thus resulting in a 2k file being loaded 50 times, which is only 100k x 200 times a second = 2megs a second x Network Lat amount = 300-500megs a second.* A Ddos is just a series of attacks that just make the server either Forbid the Hostname from connecting or accepting, and or freezing the server to shut it down for restart.

dDos used to be used as an exploit to get to Cpanel because when a server would restart the old CPANEL would popup.. thus making it easier to hack the server ~root then going through bin packages via user://~root/host/account/apache...etc.

I know alot because my minor is Network Security on my BA. If your imposing that I did this or had anything to do with this, your wrong and can't pin it on me.

First off a ddos attack is futile compared to today's industry programs such as apache etc. There are tons and tons of logs.

If I were to attack this site I would use an SQL injection, in which the error would just be masked as a failed login attempt from my IP. Of course, whos to say I would be dumb and not use a proxy, and being so spoof my hostname and macaddress since these are all on a lookup table of VBulletin.

I do my homework if I am going to attack something, of course, why would I attack this site.

Yes, its just a simple flood protection, Multiple ident/sessions from same IP (spider) then IP ban and redirect. Simple.

Quote from: AlbinoWith all the shit lately I've been a bit fed up with .cc, as I'm sure everyone knows. After Sage's post last night I was pretty irritated and this morning was thinking about asking to be demodded but decided that DOSing the site would be a much more entertaining way to get permabanned and thus removed from the drama. So with the help of a few others, I did that about 3 times.

In retrospect, it was a bit of a vagina move on my part. Sorry.

It didn't occur to me that it might make Internet Cult look bad. As far as I'm concerned, my actions had nothing to do with Internet Cult. I did it as a member of the .cc staff in order to be removed and to vent a bit of frustration. I don't plan on doing it again.

Internet Cult does not support or condone attacks on .cc.

Anyway, now that I'm not distracted by endless drama I can focus my efforts here and maybe get a bit more flash done.

Again, sorry for losing my cool.

And good staff members would try to keep drama of this size from spilling over into not only one but two forums, if you have a question about how I run my server talk to me directly and not address me on a forum I rarely visit implying my guilt before I even know what's going on. Actions have been taken, and while Albino is not banned he is no longer an admin. I think banning the person who built InternetCult is equally as hypocritical, but would also cost the community a valuable and creative member. If you think I'm wrong in my thinking, then tough titties, I never expected an action like this to be conducted by a founding member, and wouldn't believe it unless he had told me himself. I have told the entire IC community that I am ashamed of their actions, and very nearly shut down the entire site because of it; however that would not be fair to the rest of the community that is taking IC the way it's suppose to be taken: just another viewpoint of the CC.

When and if we know who the other culprits are, they will be dealt with as deemed necessary, and I am working with the staff to find ground we can both be satisfied with. IC is not anti .CC as it might seem after this attack, and it never was intended to be; and Albino never intended his attack to be on behalf of IC, but as a former staff member of .CC. Those of you who choose to distance yourself from IC, I completely understand. We're trying to build a community, not destroy one.

Just curious, how would you take down an entire site? If you plan on DDossing it also like a script kiddy (thats all it is) then your no better than everyone else. If you plan on host talking or ICANN filing you have no case.
