Title: To non-english clocks: How much english do you use a day?
Post by: HeinekenClock on July 14, 2008, 11:00:23 AM
How much english do you use a day? When I'm at home doing nothing but surfing the web, I daresay about 90% of words I use are English. Maybe I'll google some dutch program, make some coffee and ask my parents if they want some but for the rest I definitely use more english than my own language!

At work I speak about 60% dutch and the rest is german and a little bit english. The town I live in thrives on tourism and most of those are germans. I speak my own language with my colleagues and dutch people that come in for a snack but most of them day I spend my time asking the same questions over, and over and over again (Mit oder ohne Sauze? Spezial oder normal? Mittel oder Klein? Is das zu mitnimmen? Das ist zehn Euro bitte.)

Although I still suck at german in general you pick up the "clerk-german" pretty quickly.

At days where I don't work and don't stay at home it's practically 100% my own language :3

This.
It's basically:
- at home: english (except for my german irc-chat and occasional videogames or university-assignments)
- not at home: german (except for some university courses that are held in english)

Lmfao and I thought I was the only asshole thinking outside my own language.

Also depends on the situation though, when we're discussing movies or games or stuff on the internet most of my thoughts are in english (though the conversation is in dutch), but when we're discussing school or work or talking about going out I think in Frisian.

I never, ever think in Dutch. Only in Frisian and English.

I never really think to myself. That's just kind of stupid. I'll think something in English but only because I like the sound of English words.

I say about 50/50. Whenever I'm on the computer, I mostly read and speak English. When I'm doing almost everything else, I usually speak Spanish.

But also...

I have nothing better to do, I live in a 3500 person town that's flooded with 20,000 germans (seriously) each summer, there's not much to do around here but work, post here and jacking off to internet porn.

It depends, when I'm in class or with my family it's English. When I'm with the Mandarin speaking friends, then it's Mandarin, when I'm with my Cantonese speaking friends then it's Cantonese. When I'm with my Malay friends then it's Malay. When I go out to eat in the hawkers, then I'll speak Hokkien to the hawkers.

Well in real life you could say I mostly speak my own language but I do have moments when I start speaking in english with someone when I can't properly make my point in romanian.
But on the internet I use english around 80% of the time
In my mind I like to think english. I consider it good exercise as I'd want to pursue a career in an english-speaking country.

I used to think in Spanish.
I started to think in English.
Right now, it's a combination of the two.

But I speak mostly English.

I only type in English for my online activities, like the Clock Crew, and even then I keep thinking in french and translate my thoughts as I write them down, and if I'm lucky enough to find another french speaker online, I switch back. In my offline life, outside from understanding song lyrics on the radio, I have no real use for english. Besides tourists, no one speaks it around here.

Out of my 4 languages (3 and a half cause well my spanish isn't THAT great), I speak the most in English, English is my best (even more than my native Russian) and I think in English. If I read at all, it's in English. I watch TV in English. I write songs and lyrics in English. Most of my classes at school are in English. I speak English with almost all my friends.

so you get it

This question will only apply to about 2 or 3 of you.
