It was a decision of the marketing team, not the director. It's not like you're going to walk into the movie and see in the open credits "Directed by Zack 'Visionary' Snyder."

Ok, I saw this as a non-Watchmen reading movie-goer, so please don't hate me too much for my opinions.

I've heard a LOT of good hype about this movie. As I said, I haven't read the comic, and I was going to avoid doing so so that I could go into the movie with no expectations. After seeing the trailer, I think I may have to read the book before seeing the movie. If I knew nothing of comics, or that this movie was even based off of a comic, I'd probably think this was just some generic hero movie that was riding the coattails of other successful super hero movies (even if they paid attention to the blurb that mentioned it was based off the hit graphic novel). They threw a lot of different characters at me, so I didn't really know if I should be excited that one of them threw someone through a wall or not.

I have to admit, though, with the SP song and visuals, it was pretty hypnotizing.

Bitch about the trailer all you want, but Solid Snake helped write the screenplay. Also I thought the trailer was hella bangs to the wall awesome.

When I say clean I mean shiny, not non-violent. It's far too clean. It completely lacks all the grittiness of the source material.
Obviously I'm going to judge the film on its own, but this thread is about the trailer, try to realise that that's what I was talking about.

I do not see advertising to the widest possible audience as a plus. I see that as a watering down in order to appeal to every ass scratching moron watching.

Using the Smashing Pumpkins song gives the trailer a 90s/00s feel, it's not meant to have that. The argument that you should use modern music to market to a modern audience is idiotic. No, I don't admit that because I have read it, and it's excellent and one of my favourites. That's why I want to see it done correctly. The presentation is cliche American blockbuster crap. My point is that it's such an ego-stroking bullshit thing to say when the source material is the true genius on offer. You made a good point about the music. But all things considered, just because the song is in the trailer doesn't mean the score of the film will be filled with Smashing Pumpkins. When music is used in a trailer it is meant to convey a specific mood, but this is meant to get people to actually see the movie. Would Smashing Pumpkins have worked in an Amadeus trailer? No, I'm not arguing that. But it works here: the song is ambient, ominous, and foreboding, and you immediately get the sense that this is not just another comic book movie.

Is the trailer cliche? On many levels, yes. But there is a specific standard that people have come to expect from a trailer and producers have come to use to draw crowds. Just because a trailer is cliche doesn't mean the movie itself will be cliche. What it means is that they are using a method to advertise a work of art that has proved to have worked time and time again and will draw as many people as possible.

And the fact that you consider more people seeing Watchmen to be a bad thing is both infantile and elitist. The goal of filmmakers is to get people to see their work. They are not interested in satisfying the euphoria you get when you enjoy something and decry all the 'butt scratchers' who are 'too stupid to get it.' You don't want Watchmen to be a good movie. You want it to be your movie so that you can have it and stroke your ego. And the very idea that someone would try to bring other viewers into your little club makes you angry, because it will no longer be your private little ride and unwarranted self-importance.

I will be very upset if Watchmen turns out to be cliche dribble, but the only assumption I'm going to make based on the trailer is that the producers are offering an intense visual treat. Just because I like the trailer doesn't mean I don't have my doubts, it just means I think the film at the very least looks good. If I am disappointed on both ends, then you and I can shake hands, make-up and saw its bollocks off. But it would not bother me to know that the trailer did draw more average people and did what it was supposed to do. The trailer is not a representation of the film as a whole, it is a marketing tool. And I think they have marketed the film very well. That is why I am excited about the movie.

I never once said I didn't want people to see it. But I don't want the film to be compromised in order to rope in some money spending demographic who wouldn't normally be interested.
A film-maker's goal is NOT to get people to see his film. A film-maker's goal is to make the best film he can make. A marketer's role is to get people to see the film-maker's film.
An audience should be drawn to a film. A film should not be drawn to an audience.

The point of a trailer in my view is to say to people "this is the kind of film this is. if this looks like something you'd enjoy, go see it"
If I feel a trailer is going "hey everyone come see this!! COME SEE THIS!!! COME!!!" then I tend to dislike it.

Having said that, bad trailer =/= bad film of course, but so far I'm just reacting to what I've been given to work with.

After I saw the trailer, I soaked up a bunch of Wikipedia pages on the comics and characters. Then I watched the trailer again and went to the official site. I even checked out the production blog.

It hooked me. I'll see it.

I'm impressed with just about every scene in the trailer being direct from the comic, but I'm not a big fan of all the slow motion and I hope the actual film has less of it. It does look like they're trying to push everything to be way over the top, when one of the things that appeals to me about the comic is that it seems very real.

also that's a huge thing there with the comic/movie gap. a shiny blue god man can seem believable and realistic in a comic but in a movie, not so much. it's the differences of the media. in a comic he's just a few lines with some blue ink while a normal guy is a few lines and some pink ink. in a movie normal guy is normal guy and blue guy is big budget cg with hours of careful matriculated work put into every detail of his movement, lighting and texture and weeks of rendering and compositing

It doesn't look like they changed it that much, at least from the teaser, we still see NightOwl in the arctic and Ozymandias in front of the television screens, so maybe they're just trying to surprise fans with something different or, *ehem*, more realistic than a faked alien monster attack.

EDIT: There's a lot of buzz at Comic-Con about the Archimedes and other props from the movie on display, and from what the actors have revealed, it seems the film is going to stay true to the characters.

Under the Hood is part of Watchmen. So is Tales of the Black Freighter. And Rorschach's diary.
They're parts of the world Watchmen takes place in, put there in order to flesh out the characters and the nature of superheroics within their world, and to provide anti-thesis and reflection on certain characters within it. They're not necessary to understand the story, which is great on its own, but they make the book an ultimately more fulfilling experience.

Huge spoilers! Don't read if you haven't read the book at least once! I'm not fucking kidding!:
Rorschach is awesome, but he's also a self-destructive objectivist moral-absolutist, and more than a trifle insane. He believes all criminals should be punished, hence him executing both a child murderer/rapist, and "Captain Carnage-" a man who never committed any crimes, but pretended to in order to get beat up by superheroes. And he thinks highly of the Comedian, considering him a great man for never cashing in or retiring his superhero status, and dismisses The comedians actions as what was basically  being a serial rapist as "moral lapses," though The Comedian was arguably the biggest moral relativist in the entire book. Veidt is our utilitarian, who sees fit to destroy the greater part of New York to the end of world peace. Rorschach, faced with *EVEN BIGGER SPOILER* the successful implementation of that plan, cannot allow himself to be a hypocrite, and would choose to expose the plan as a fraud to risk the immediate end of the peace Veidt brought about rather than allow him to get away with murder, and thus meets his end at the hands of a reluctant Dr. Manhattan.
And yeah, I mean, the refrigerator. Rorschach is fucking crazy.
He had no way of knowing if that plan was going to work.

Well I think Biblo's right about a lot of things, but this trailer grabbed my attention anyway and that's really all it needs to do. If I hadn't been keeping up with the production diary stuff I'd be a bit worried about them turning it into a generic action thing but from what I've heard it seems like that won't be happening. Alan Moore may not be in on it but Dave Gibbons really seems to be digging it and he surely cares about the story as much as anyone.

Also it may sound kind of gay but I'm glad Dr Manhattan has a penis. His nudity was one of the things I was half expecting them to change and the fact that they haven't is one choice in the right direction, even if lots of teenage boys go OH MAN YUCK.

It's a b-side of a song created specifically for "Batman And Robin", which is viewed as the worst super hero movie ever, whereas "Watchmen" is supposed to end up being the greatest thing ever.

So its not a shitty choice of music for the trailer, it's the perfect choice. It fits the mood and is a great nerdy inside joke to boot.

there was no group of superheroes called "the watchmen" in "watchmen," watchmen movie trailer >=(

a few things to note, doesn't really sound like they have rorshach's speech patterns down, doctor manhattan sounds too human, they're calling themselves watchmen, which correct me if i'm wrong they never call themselves that in the book.


oh well the movie still looks like it will be good let's hope they don't compromise and we see all the nitty gritty shit that is rorschach.

actually, he never wanted anyone to make movies out of his comics for a long time, when watchmen was originally going to be made into a film by terry gilliam, terry went to see alan, and asked him how he would make watchmen, alan said, "I wouldn't"

then terry gilliam dropped out

That was a major reason for me. Especially because he went back and wen over the origonal black and white ink with watercolor, and it often looks too muddy. I think V for vendetta should look more stark or something.
