These are ideas for some flash project i may or may not be creating in the future. I only just started as i will be doing alot of these "reference" sheets to other characters, but how do you think of them so far?

Looks interesting. Does everyone in the universe in which this will take place have bug-like appendages of some sort, or does that only apply to those characters?

OH DEAR GOD IT'S THE NEXT LEVEL OF FURRIES

The first one could use some development. The antennae look fairly unnaturally placed, maybe pointing them upwards could fix it. Also, it looks more like a cartoon than the other two.

No offense, but the second one looks like a 14 year old weeaboo girl drew a self portrait.
EDIT: Holy shit look at that camel toe

Third is awesome

Woah, I see your style has changed greatly. Do you still do what I call "breadfruiting" which is all the little lines and dots for shading? Wouldn't really work on these lil fellas though. I like the top and bottom one, not so much the middle :0

1. Yeah i drew the ant a few weeks before the other 2, so the style is very different. I like the place of the antennae, i'm not sure what you mean by that.
2. Yeah i can't draw girls without giving it an anime style. ;c
3. Yeah i loved how Jim came out, thanks.

A few huge, mind-blowing problems:

1. Gage's face looks completely different from the side than from the front.

2. Inkay looks like ass from the side. Terrible proportions.

3. Anime.

4. Inkay and Gage don't seem to match the bug theme that the other characters do, but rather generic anime fan characters. To be honest, I don't like where this whole thing's going already. Reminds me of Wonchop.

Yes, I'm being a douche, but something about this whole setup irks me. Perhaps try not using anime.

1. I realize that, his front view is entirely anime and his side view is more of a cartoon style. The front view is the first drawling i ever did of him, i draw him like the side view depicts now.
2. Shes kinda leaning, its not a complete side view, but i guess i messed up in a few areas.
3. Yes, as much as i try to stay away from it all my work looks like it. I really am having trouble developing an original style, especially with bodies.
4. Gage = worker ant.
Black (ant) suit (worker)
Inkay = Termite
Working clothes to work with wood ect

Completely rework how you draw faces based on how YOU see faces. Just look at people while you draw them. Don't think about anything you know about drawing faces while you do it, just think about the lines of the features.

Anime also has a thing about drawing people like a mental homunculus. I guess they call it "chibi". It's mostly made to look "cute" and to appeal to children, whose heads are disproportionately large and who think people with hands and feet dressed in massive gloves and boots are cool. Redraw the first guy, with the green hair, with his hands, feet, and head in proper proportion to his body.

Well, it seems like you draw a lot of three-quarter views as anime. I'm probably not the one to ask about drawing faces, but I'd look at different styles of drawing.

Don't copy photographs. That's a perfect way to learn disproportion, because the mind perceives things differently than they really are. And anime is just a big no.

I'd recommend looking at Richard Williams, Disney and Chuck Jones. They were great animators.

The main idea behind animating is to take things from life, then overexaggerate it, from the way its shaped to the way it moves.

Not as bad as the pictures you posted at the beginning of the thread. Mostly, the proportions, character design, and facial features are anime-ish, but I prefer this. Still, make it more like an American cartoon. Try and avoid weird-colored, spiky hair as well, as well as Japanese police officer looking uniforms.

EDIT: Oh, and there's proportion problems, especially on the face, head and back arm.

I actually think they look fine, because anime does not instantly mean something is bad.

Just try to get a uniform style going between all 3 characters and I think it will work well.

Also, the Inkay's clothes are fine, it's just that in the first view they look painfully tight. loosen them up a bit and it should work.

Forgetting how you've been taught to draw eradicates originality? What? I'm not telling him he has to be a realist, I'm just saying he has to look at an eye like he looks at an eye, and draw based on HIS interpretation of the forms instead of going by the way he's been taught to, which is necessarily based on someone else's interpretations.

Inkay just needs a minor rework is all. I really like the khaki engineer look on a girl, but putting her in mens full-length overalls might be better. Baggy in the legs, pulled in by the belt at the waist, and formed at the top of the breast with an airspace between the waist and about two inches below the tit. A better weapon might also be an improvement; Pay a tribute to Macintosh and give the semi-hot chick a sledge to throw around, or if try a cordless powertool, like a drill, circular saw, or automatic feed screwgun.

Oh, and Inquisitor draws really good bug girls. You should have him send you some.

You still have the exaggerated extremities and distance distortion from anime, but the face is a definite departure, and not for worse. The hair needs work, but hair is always hard. Right now it looks like SBC leaves.

You'll probably hate your art for a long time when you're first breaking away from the beaten path. For the next couple years, perhaps, it will probably look unformed and weak in comparison. Persist, though. If you never practice building your own style the style will never be built, and you'll remain limited to imitation.

Just look at some pictures of anime expressions next to pictures of the same expressions in a realist style. That should give you some perspective on the traits of your style that are inherited from anime. The things that make anime anime and not some other style.

I like the bee man and the cricket man, they're the most interesting in terms of how you applied the insect idea to human form.

I don't understand why people are suggesting you look at photos or american cartoons or specific artists without even mentioning drawing from life. Drawing from life is the way forwards bud.

Also on the subject of only being able to draw girls in anime fashion: the key to drawing the opposite gender is to stop caring whether they're attractive or not. It's the longing to draw what you're attracted to that gets in the way of clear thought. All you need to do is analyse the difference between men and women and it becomes simple. There's actually not much difference at all, it's almost entirely in the thickness of the neck and shoulders. Don't let what you think about girls get in the way of what girls actually look like.

Still getting better! Cartoony, yes, but much more removed from anime. I would make the head smaller next. Keep in mind that in reality the head grows much less through puberty than the body, so if the head is disproportionately larger than the body it means the body hasn't grown into the head yet. To exaggerate the size of the head is to say that the character is a youth, the bigger the younger. Also, an anatomy thing, the teeth should not be twisted to the side by the lips being twisted in that "grr" shape. It makes it look like you think the mouth is normally off-center. Also, the bicuspids and molars should be showing in full view, not the front teeth.

Quote from: Munglai;1382933Drawing from life is the way forwards bud.

I said that but then Tremclad said that eradicates originality.

Quote from: Munglai;1382935Oh also I don't like the way that portrait tutorial man draws. I don't think you should know what you're going to be doing next I'm more for constant spontaneity and invention.

Yes, I hate the way he draws noses. He also relies on shading to flesh out the art, while I think your shading should be optional, and that you should be able to explain the form through only outlines. But then I guess that's just what separates our drawing styles.

that looks very nice!

One thing i would say is try to be a little more courageous to your character design and try to dimensionalize parts of his body, what sticks out most are the eyes and the ears.

Try to curve the eyes a bit at your current perspective (obviously this will not apply to a frontal perspective) to make it seem like he is staring at something from a side angle, instead of just looking directly in front of him constantly.

I would also try to fold the ears back to your characters hair slightly so that he is showing realism through this perspective, it wont seem to make much difference but if you are trying to improve your style this will help you alot with character depth.

Here is very emotion invokes something like having a bad day, or a reason to be angry instead of just being comically and cutely angry. Also, the way it looks here is that the big eyes are bug eyes, not anime eyes. So in general his emotion and appearance makes him look like a near-perfect anthropomorphisation of a wasp, but a stag beetle works, too, if that same sort of personality is what you're going for. The antennae still need to be righted like I mentioned earlier, though.

Keep the anime styled ones.

Hey now. It may take time to develop it, but I think it's a step in a better direction. The main thing the anime style has on this one is the level of detail, which, obviously, he can account for. And once he starts using this primarily he'll decide to make slight alterations over time, eventually building it up to high quality.

I love them all. The first one creeps me out because his antennae look like maggots.
