What the fuck, of course he can tell a story. Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Big Fish are all great films and had great stories behind them. He just needs to stop letting idiots write his scripts and lay off all the DARK bollocks for a while.

edward scissorhands and ed wood don't really have a story and big fish is more of a series of stories, but there is an arc in the son
the 2 eds are both just really character driven but there's not really a strong plot to them, they're more a series of events. granted, i think that works in both cases and i couldn't picture the films any other way, but stories they ain't.
fun fact: i got lost in the Alice in Wonderland maze in Disney World Paris when i was 6 orso.
fun fact 2: when we returned to Disney 6 years later (i was out of the maze by then) my 5 year old nephew got stuck under a fence.... in the Alice in Wonderland Maze! he also lost a power ranger cap.
Needless to say i'm scared shitless whenever i see Alice in Wonderland.

I'm not sure what you consider to be a story but as far as I'm aware a story
is just a series of events. What makes it a story rather than a load of shit in a row is that it's a series of events in which a character struggles to overcome whatever obstacles there might be and arrives at a conclusion that he wouldn't necessarily have arrived at if he'd just gone on living his life with no obstacles at all (although of course there are awesome stories that break that rule!). It's the completeness that makes a story a good story if you ask me, and I think that's something that these films have in bucketloads.
I'll admit that Ed Wood is more of a character exploring affair rather than something really plot driven, but Edward Scissorhands is a classic example of story telling. It's practically a fairytale.

QuoteThe problem with making a dark and disturbing version of Alice in Wonderland is that it's pretty dark and disturbing to begin with, which gives it little training wheels that help cultural firebrands ride it into geniusdom once every eighteen months or so. Masterminding a trippy reinterpretation of Lewis Carroll is like making a version of Crazy Traxi, only crazy! At this point, about the edgiest thing you could do with Alice in Wonderland is try to make it a little less fucking insane.

I liked the part in Disney's Alice when, in the court room, ostensibly for no reason, they decided the March Hare would make a credible witness and called him to the stand, at which point the entire scene dissolved into complete chaos.

and he didn't direct the nightmare before christmas, so it's a moot point
i really don't agree that edward scissorhands' story is well structured. i mean, don't get me wrong i do love the film. and i don't think that this story thing is a flaw, i just think it's a different way to make a film. i just don't think this different way always works.
Hasn't Alice in Wonderland been gothed up enough?
would have been cooler with johnny depp as alice, more interested in marilyn manson's lewis carrol biopic.
Why does everyone assume it will be all gothy? Not everything Burton does is gothy. I think it will be a bit more twisted, and maybe a bit darker, but I really don't think he'll make it much darker than the book. I mean, have you read the book? It's pretty dark.
I'm kind of even on this. I'm not gonna pass judgment until it comes out. I love most of Burtons work, but not all of it. I loved his Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, but I don't compare it to Willy Wonka. There is really no need to, they are two different movies based on the same book. I can't see the second one as a re-make because it was SO different.
And another Alice movie is coming out later this/next year, based on the game. Not Burton.

But regarding the Tim Burton's Alice, i'm sure it will be good, if not good, atleast watchable. I mean we've heard the Alice story plenty of times, he has a ton of room for his creativity to flow. Personally if it turns out like a bad acid trip, I'll be satisfied.

Both original movies. I stand by the fact that he can stick to his "style" when it's his own stuff because he's somewhat good at it in those instances.
It's when he shits it all over other people's work and calls it a remake that I get really pissed.
Is there a reason it's becoming cool to take Johnny Depp and make him look like Michael Jackson?

Everyone saw this shit coming miles away despite any optimism.
Depp as the Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the queen, Alan Rickman as the caterpillar. Characters that look like corpses. Tim Burton is disgustingly predictable. I predicted all those actors back in February when I first heard about this. I also knew damn well that any optimism was just setting me up for disappointment, but I was optimistic anyway until yesterday.

This has absolutely nothing to do with American Mcgee. That game was great because it was it was called American Mcgee's Alice, making it clear it was his own take. Burton is claiming this is staying true to the original and pretending he's doing a good job of it.
@sixshooter: There's a difference between trying to be optimistic and actually thinking it will be good.
You guys are I'm a edgy teen if you thought he wouldn't overly goth-it up.
Seriously, that's the draw of his movies, nobody actually believe this is trying to be original, people will always view it as "Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland" and not "Alice in Wonderland (the new one, you know)"

You know when remakes come out people always scream "BETTR THAN TEH ORIGINEL!!!" even(especially) if they've never seen the source material in the first place. It will especially happen with Alice because little kids don't read.

I still wont lay judgment on this movie until I actually see it. People always do that and then when it comes out it's sometimes good. I LOVE Alice in Wonderland, and it is, in fact, my favorite story(ies). Burton is my (one of) favorite director, so I still have faith.
I mean look at how people felt about The Dark Knight. A lot of people saw this:

And were instantly pissed off. Hell, even before this picture hit the net, they were just mad that it was Heath Ledger.
So, for me, the lesson was learned. I still think this might be a good movie. Hell, it couldn't be worse that the Disney version.
There is nothing wrong with the Disney version. >=|
I liked it when I was little, but now that I'm older, I really don't. I guess it's because I love the books so much and Disney ignored them when writing the movie. I like the Cheshire Cat in the Disney one, but the Mad Hatter made me sad.
