I wanted a blank a5 book to make notes in, but I actually couldn't find one on sale anywhere around here. So I made one.

I cut a pad of a4 drawing paper in two, put all the paper together and glued the spine with wood glue, to keep all the pages together.
Then made a cover, drilled holes all the way down the side, and bound everything together with the japanese binding technique I learnt in my papermaking class.

The cover is made from a map of Tuebingen, the place in Germany where I was living for the past five months or so.
The binding string is a sort of plastic rafia that I found in my parents' garage. It's durable and looks pretty neat. Nice colour.
I started doing some quick sketches of things.

They are admittedly quite poor but I honestly have practically no experience drawing on paper. I've always worked with a tablet on the computer, since joining the Clock Crew. Happily though, i've found a lot of skills are transferable.
Will probably post more sketches as I progress.
Man, that is tight.
I've got a blank sketchbook sitting over there, mocking me. You're inspiring me to show it who's boss!
Wow your skills could come in handy if we ever formed a party
I like your drawings too how did you colour them

What kind of party?
Thanks. They're done with colouring pencils

Thanks. I recommend it actually, it's very relaxing
i feel so unsophisticated for mostly throwing my sketches out

What is wrong with you?!
Never throw them out. Ever. Even and especially if they're terrible, because they reenforce lessons you've learned since or through them, and reminds you to adhere to those lessons. Showing the benefits of them. They can also become the source of future inspiration.

Or in my case, future depression.
Either as "dear god, I sucked" or as "dear god, that's how I still draw".

I've been able to salvage plenty of verses from awful shit that I've written, only to feel sickness and regret upon reexamination the morning after, much like the grotesque slut one might go for while intoxicated. It's the reason you change, isn't it? You look at what you've done, know that it's shit, and figure out why it's shit. Then never do that again.
Not to mention the phenomenon of the critical eye being warped with time. Something you feel quite happy about after first making you could come to hate, and something you hate at first you could come to regard as one of your best pieces.
I keep my sketchbooks for a couple of years and then look at them and go haha wow I was really shit and then I throw them away. I don't think old sketches matter at all. It's doing them that matters, not keeping them.

I would just keep them for sentimental reasons. This one in particular reminds me of my time in Germany, because of the map on the cover, and also of my time in Spain, because that's where I am now, and all the things I'm drawing are things found here.
Incidentally... Here's what I did today.

Some plums.

My dad picking almonds. This one was challenging because I felt I needed to do it very quickly (in a matter of 5 minutes or so) and so there is practically no detail at all

I think it depends on your attitude while you were doing the sketchbook. I chucked away all the ones I did when I was a kid and just wanted to draw cool stuff and I chucked away the one I did on the trip to Berlin I did with college because I wasn't taking it seriously at all at the time. However I think I'd have trouble throwing away the ones I did this year because I was really trying to improve and I especially wouldn't want to get rid of the ones I did in China because I can look through them and remember everything in really great detail. The photos I took kind of pale in comparison.
I like those plums, Leek! I love the way you colour. Did you learn that from using photoshop for all those years?

Thanks! Yes I suppose I am applying the same methods more or less as I do in photoshop.

You should kind of build your own house or something knowing your creative territory, hehe.
Really nice works
Thanks!
I wonder if I'll ever have enough money to build my own house. I'll just have to draw some instead.
