WELCOME TO NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH

Every year in November, the world gathers for a mission of literary abandon. The goal of this mission is to
write a 50,000-word book between November 1 and November 30. A daunting task, to be sure, but it can be done, and the results can be grand! Winning NaNoWrimo doesn't give any monetary or material gain, but the winners get something far better: a 50,000-word idea, and the pleasure of knowing you're better than normal people.
This year, I've arranged for an official Clock Crew Nanowrimo group. From this forum, we can brainstorm plots, compare characters, log word counts, and receive moral support when we're in the long, painful drag of Week 2. From here, dreams will come true! We'll shed our inhibitions and nagging doubts of our own ability, and just plunge!
But we won't be going into this adventure cold, of course. Lots of prep work must be done to get us ready for the real work in November, and this forum is available to get all that figured out. We can outline our stories, bounce ideas off each other, compose our book's plot outline, and trade useful survival tips.
If you would like to participate, please post in this forum to be added to the list. I also recommend that you join the official NaNoWriMo forum (http://www.nanowrimo.org) (
IT'S BACK UP EVERYONE GO REGISTER!) to make full use of its technological marvels. I'll also add you to my NaNo Buddy list, so I can keep an eye on you. ;)
IF I CAN WORK IT OUT WITH THE ADMINISTRATION, ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE A CC NANOWRIMO AWARD FOR PARTICIPATING, BUT WINNERS WILL RECEIVE A SPECIAL AWARD FOR WINNING. ALSO, IF I FEEL UP TO IT, THERE WILL BE A WRITING CONTEST FOR THE FINISHED NANOWRIMO ENTRIES
To start us off, I might offer some recommended reading. First, the official NaNoWriMo manual,
"No Plot? No Problem! A Low-Stress, High-Velocity Guide to Writing a Novel in 30 Days", written by its founder, Chris Baty. You can preview it at Google Books (http://books.google.ca/books?id=O8aRltYgWsUC&dq=No+Plot+No+Problem&pg=PP1&ots=YWdDv0m-K6&sig=-BR8sFUGRmmqqkKpJNyOYPZ_Bms&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=4&ct=result), and I highly recommend picking it up. You can get it at the library or most any reputable bookstore,
and I found a full version of it on BookChan, if you don't mind PDFs (http://www.anonib.com/bookchan/index.php?t=1179). Also available is this free PDF book, "Nano for the New and Insane (http://lazette.net/Free%20dingen/NaNoBook.pdf)", by Lazette Gifford. Also highly useful.
Welcome, ye Clock Crew, to the first November of the rest of your life! :salute:

I think I'll give this a go. I owe you one anyway.
Wow, 50k words. I'm really tempted to join since I love reading and writing, but that's some hell of a task! I'll have to think about it a bit.
Yeah, I'll join.
You say "win", so I'm assuming there's some sort of contest somewhere. I'm curious as to what the prizes are.
Also, when I join the .org website, my username will be Topcatyo.
Quote from: Bubbie;1416162Yeah, I'll join.
You say "win", so I'm assuming there's some sort of contest somewhere. I'm curious as to what the prizes are.
The prize is a 50,000-word story with your name on it and the pleasure of knowing you're better than normal people.
Sign me up snake!
YOU NEVER IM ME ANYMORE ABOUT LITERATURE!
I'm joining. Do I require a nanowrimo account?
This will be my second year, only made it to like 17000 words last time around, failed terribly.
I'm thinking of obtaining a bottle of Adderall and doing the thing in the first week or so. I hear that the guy that wrote Dr. Jeckyl and Mr Hyde wrote the book in a single night after snorting cocaine, maybe I'll have some insane revelation when I get going and I'll write a national bestseller or some shit.
Quote from: Marked One;1416300I hear that the guy that wrote Dr. Jeckyl and Mr Hyde wrote the book in a single night after snorting cocaine.
Not quite.
Quote from: SnakeClock;1416171The prize is a 50,000-word story with your name on it and the pleasure of knowing you're better than normal people.
Sounds good to me.
Hell yeah I'll write a 50,000-word story.
It's offline but I'll get back to it.
Maaaaaaybe.
I'm just so lazy.
Quote from: Forget that Lump fella;1416261I'm joining. Do I require a nanowrimo account?
No, but it definitely helps. Plus, if you win and you tell it your winning word count, you get a big fancy certificate!
Quote from: ShotglassClock;1416447Maaaaaaybe.

These are one of the habits NaNoWriMo is designed to purge. With a firm deadline and a big mission at hand, people can do anything!
In I am.
hopefully school won't be such a pain in the ass like it was last year >:c
I wrote down my whole plot outline. It's awesome.
Quote from: Bubbie;1416571I wrote down my whole plot outline. It's awesome.
Post it in the Plot thread, yo.
Sure, add me to the list.
do I have to be an offical clock? If not then count me in. my signature even has the word text and read in it not that it means anything but I do read alot
Quote from: gumfruit;1416612do I have to be an offical clock? If not then count me in
No, but you sure you're up for it?
Alright, I'll put you down.
Wait is it a collab or individually? I might I'll try to is there only an award for winning???
It's not a collab, Boston. We're all doing it individually.
And yes, there's only an award for winning. Monetary and material gain aren't the point of this project. The real prize is that you get to be better than normal people.
I think I'm in.
No. No, yeah, I'm definitely in.
Winning just means you successfully do it, right?

Well NaNoWriMo's one of the best ways to really open the idea valve. ;)
I'd do it, but after writing a script in which everything had to rhyme, the love for writing has left me. Also, 50,000 isn't very easy, I'd probably start to ramble

Earlier this year, I wrote an entire finished novel in three days. You'd think that would have killed my interest in writing too, but it's easy to bounce back. ;)

Quote from: gumfruit;1419213are we all doing contributons to a big story or is it a collab of little storys
Neither. We all write our own novels. None of them will have anything to do with each other. It's an independent project, we're all just here for moral support and to share advice.
This event wasn't my idea, either. It's been around since 1999. My idea was just to get the Clock Crew involved.

Well since it looks like we have plenty of eager writers...
I think we should have some novel conversation in here!
What's everyone doing to prepare for this?
I'm carrying around a small pocketbook and writing little ideas here and there. Nothing major yet.

Am I registering you?
Sign me up, but just know my goal is not to reach 50k words this year. I'm hoping for 25k, but it depends... it's a terrible month this year, especially if I want to get Proximity out on the 360 (XNA Community Games launching in a month or two) as soon as possible. It also looks like I *may* have a female distraction this year, but it's a bit too early to tell.
I'm still deciding if I should start a new manuscript or spend this focusing on finishing up the incomplete manuscripts from previous years. The former is easier for Nano, but the latter would be more useful, plus I've got a good 25-30k left to write for them anyway.
You guys should also look to see if you've got a Nano group in your region, because it can really help to have in-person support groups to help keep you motivated throughout the month. I've been participating with my local group since 2005, and this year it sounds like I'm going to lead a couple of the write-ins.
My Nanowrimo user account is 'cableshaft', by the way.
Yay, SageClock is entering HaNaNoWriMo! It's a good day!
