CNN says it's 194 to 69. Cali, Washington, and Oregon aren't in yet, and they're safe obama states. That means Obama needs 1 more electoral vote.

You guys know this is early assumptions based on the little that has been reported in right? States will be flip flopping between red and blue until the wee hours of the morning.
Title: THE REALLY BIG BARACK OBAMA THEARD
Post by: AlbinoClock on November 04, 2008, 09:51:33 PM
um, why does cnn say they are electoral votes then and say that many states are undecided still? I don't think these are exit polls.

By the by, if CNN's numbers are right, obama's got 199, add the 73 from the west coast and you've got our new president. :)

Predictions based only on what they have, which is currently very little. No state even has above 90% precincts reported in yet. The only state that can currently be safely assumed is Kentucky.

Um no because you pay for it in taxes.
This is why I advocate economic and marketing business classes as a requirement in high school. People don't know how money works.

When you pay more taxes, it means businesses pay more taxes. When a business has to pay more there are 3 options: Cut people, lower wages, or increase price. Any of these solutions will lead to the consumers needing more money to buy what they need. Now, you have extra taxes and spend more on the same things, so you aren't saving any money. In exchange, the government provides sub-par benefits. The problem with the government providing benefits is its way of handling money through bureaucracy, which tends to waste/lose money.

Yes. Everyone's taxes are going to be skyrocketing, terrorists will now be granted immigration and a free house without question, the new national religion will be muslim, every troop will be out of Iraq by February, the national debt will increase 10 more trillion dollars by 2010, there will be a black market for aborted fetuses to be used in stem cell research, whites will be the minority by 2011, Reverend Wright will be the new pope, everyone will be on drugs and the white house will be painted black. Also, while Obama was speaking, I kept imagining him introducing the starting lineup of the 1996 Chicago Bulls. Like "Our country is in peril... and that's why we need to the help of... AT POINT GUARD, NUMBER 23, MICHAAAAAAAEEEEEELLLLL JORRRRRRRRDAAAAAAAAN!!!"

Quote from: RomanClock;1441741When you pay more taxes, it means businesses pay more taxes.

Well said!

I almost cried when CNN's black commentary couldnt stop himself from getting tears in his eyes. I am not totally white and even though I am from Europe this actually feels as if it means something to me, as a final defeat of christian fundamentalism and racism.

McCains defeat speech was also touching, the man he showed us there was the man I loved before the election... a man who could shake the hand of his enemy and see the good of all americans and mankind. What Pahlin and the rest of the republican party turned him into was an abomination, but at his defeat speech the old McCain shine through and what a man he was.
Loved how they Boo'ed Sarah Pahlin.

Obamas speech was quite good, he borrows alot of lines from Martin Luther King. (During his Germany speech he copied 5 lines directly from "I have a Dream" speech.)

I am overjoyed and for the first time in eight years enthusiastic about the world.
My countries news are talking about the hazards and how Obama wants more European soldiers into Afghanistan etc.
I would've never dreamed of serving in Afghanistan during the Bush reign, but with Obama in the white house I would be ready to fight side by side with Americans. Because I would know we were fighting for the same beliefs and ideals, and I would be ready to shed my blood togheter with americans for those ideals.

Great Campagin, great runner candidates and the best man won.

Very nice election, I'm glad Obama won over McCain though I did not vote for him. In my opinion he was the better choice out of the two for president. I look forward to social issues like stem cell research, drug prohibition, abortion, gay marrage, and other such things being approached with a liberal point of view for a change.

I know that it isn't popular here as it is a conservative viewpoint, but I'm saddened that our second amendment will soon be restricted. I'm pretty certain that he will attempt to pass an assault weapons ban and eventually probably try to go for a pistol ban as well. Oh well. I'd rather surrender part of that right than have the entire country go to shit... or get shittier I guess I should say.

For you convenience Flux, I shall now attempt to explain in simplified terms the effect of increased taxes among various income levels:

Single man making a low wage of $400/week [~$20,000/year] (this is about food service wage) and we'll extrapolate for no government benefits at first (probably could qualify for welfare and food stamps) and assume essentially perfect medical condition or other various problems than can impact finances.
As you may or may not know, the employer will take deduct from his wages various government and private benefits (probably no private benefits for food service though) which include things like social security and medicare on the government side, and various insurances for health or accidents from the job or retirement on the private side. This is without assuming union payments.
So, in the current state of taxes, the deductions from the paycheck will account to aprox $50-$100 (can vary a lot) so he now earns $250-$350/week [~$15,000/year].
Then we need to deduct for income tax which will actually tax on his ~$20,000/year (to put it simply and assuming no charity or other income etc.)
So we take 10% of ~$20,000, $2,000. So he REALLY gets ~$13,000.
BUT! Now we must deduct cost of living for shelter, car, insurance, food, maintenance, clothing, etc. (excluding most luxury like large TV or special equipment or hobbies, assuming this man rents and has ~$10,000 car on 10 year payment plan at 2% which is generous and is insured). This will come out to be rent (includes electric, gas, insurance, etc) ~$8000, car (includes gas, maintenance, insurance etc.) ~$3000, food/clothes ~$2000 and uh oh....
$13,000-$8,000-$3,000-$2000 = $0 and this is being GENEROUS.
Now this type of person will probably qualify for a few thousand in government benefits and maybe even private charity. So hes barely breaking even.

Now this is closest the lowest possible income and live a normal though melancholy life above being a bum.

Now I'll think about describing the situations for the next few levels probably in a separate post.

I hope you read this.

See this is more sensationalism and over simplified economics. Because you don't understand money, you think its all about the government.
In REALITY its more like THIS:
$10 trillion is the total dept of all dept in the entire nation, government, corporate, and individual.
5 Trillion is debt of the Federal government, where only 50% of that is foreign ownership.
5 trillion of it is corporate and individual debt. So the problem is that PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE MONEY.
Not only that EVERY COUNTRY ON THE PLANET HAS DEBT. The reasons involve complex economic theory which I don't fully understand, but in a simplified (perhaps too simplified) statement: Debt is not always bad.
Consider: When you buy a house, there is no way you are going to pay off $300,000 right off the bat. You have to take out a loan, and pay it back slowly.

Personally, when my father left my mother when she was pregnant with me, she was on welfare and living with my grandparents. She went back to college, and is now one of the most highly regarded computer techs at the college where she works, and she and my step-dad now pay the taxes associated with middle-income families.

Without the welfare reform offered under President Clinton, she never would have had those opportunities. She could have been a waitress, and I could still be living with my grandma in the middle of the ghetto.

In America, we help the less fortunate. If someone stumbles and falls, we help them back up.
If somebody quite simply gets fucked out of making his or her own life, that shouldn't be their only shot at it.

In moderation, of course, but... right? I'm not wrong, am I?

LIFE ISN'T FAIR

Governments have tried to solve this problem for centuries BUT GOVERNMENT CANT DO IT. Forcing people to give money to someone else for free solves no problem ever.

If you got $200 a week and you never have to do anything, will you do anything with your life?
One type person will be fine with that, they don't care where it comes from, how they get it or anything, they just like they get free money and don't have to do anything. This is the poor person.
Then there is the type of person who will want to do something with it or do something for themselves, whether use it as capital or invest in a market. This is the rich person.

Roman you should realize that tax cuts for lower incomes doesn't mean more free money for them, it means they have to pay less. What it also means is that the lower incomes have more money to spend. That means more goods sold. That means a stronger economy. That means the people on the other end of the scale, with high incomes, get more money from their stocks, profit sharing plans and whatever.
Quote from: RomanClock;1441915Not only that EVERY COUNTRY ON THE PLANET HAS DEBT. The reasons involve complex economic theory which I don't fully understand, but in a simplified (perhaps too simplified) statement: Debt is not always bad.
The problem is not that the United States has a debt, it's that its debt is growing out of every proportion. The risk is that at some critical point, countries lose complete faith in your economy and the dollar. Resulting in mass withdrawal of investments and dumping of dollars. The United States would go bankrupt. Of course, as it would be a disaster not just for the United States, but also for the rest of the world, people are working very hard to convince investors that there's light at the end of the tunnel. I watched a documentary on this subject, and apparently China was already considering withdrawing (part of) its one trillion dollar investment in your economy.

I don't know exactly what you're trying to say. If you're saying tax cuts are generally good, then I agree. But I wasn't discussing economic effects of a tax cut which would take another essay.

Massive debt is bad. However, debt is not JUST debt since its really a network of many different debts to many different things. And China actually has 500 billion in bonds. Investments are a different matter since that's really a network of hundreds of businesses which you can't just "pull out."
If the government does nothing, its a pretty good way to lower debt (as Clinton demonstrated).
Also, its kind of weird how this is but the US owes China and China owes the US but you can't just cancel it out because its so complicated.

It all goes hand in hand. You can't say something like, "It's unfair that the rich have to give their money to the poor FOR FREE" and conveniently disregard the economic effects. Especially considering the fact that most of that money will find its way back to the rich in one way or another. That's what I'm trying to say.

Quote from: RomanClock;1441957Massive debt is bad. However, debt is not JUST debt since its really a network of many different debts to many different things.
Doesn't matter on a global scale.

Quote from: RomanClock;1441957And China actually has 500 billion in bonds. Investments are a different matter since that's really a network of hundreds of businesses which you can't just "pull out."
Investments also include shares owned by foreign companies in United States companies, which can be dumped en masse. Foreign banks can deny loans to American banks, withdraw their money from American banks. Exporters (of whatever) to the United States can stop exporting out of fear of not getting paid. Should I go on?

Quote from: RomanClock;1441957Also, its kind of weird how this is but the US owes China and China owes the US but you can't just cancel it out because its so complicated.
It wouldn't be a very smart move on the part of the US to cancel out debts. Why? Because the Chinese economy is still growing, it's a big fat cash cow.

I find it adorable how so many of the Roman/Flux posts contain "you don't understand ho this works" and they basically took that and made it more and more passive agressive.

I live in England, and yesterday in class we disscussed the importance of this eledtion and I was upset to find how many people saw it as unimportant.

I too was a huge fan of McCain, and was happy to find he was the Republican nominee as at that point I found the election pretty win/win, however as time went by I found myself slowly losing admiration for McCain. He regained it in the final few days before the election, however, when he pretty much told his campaign managers to take a hike.

I'm happy how this election turned out overall, and I really hope that Obama somehow does something to directly benefit Roman a lot, because that would be just dandy.

Quote from: RomanClock;1441741Um no because you pay for it in taxes.

Of course, people could always stop buying unneccessary shit like Guitar Hero. I bet that would both save a lot of money and have a positive effect on the cesspool of modern "culture".

yes because when someone is assassinated, the entire country is responsible.

america elected him yes, but that doesn't mean america isn't home to its fair share of lunatic gun-toting fascists. it only takes one racist psychopath to pull a trigger. regardless of how the majority swings.

There are no reason to have guns everywere, except they make your penis feel large.

I've had times when I've tried to kill people due blind rage but I've failed due lack of tools to do so, I hjumped on a guys head, I hit one with a frying pan etc.
Thing is alot of people have this animalistic rage that will just surface once you are pushed to far, when you do you just want to kill this source of frustration and will take any tool in an effort to do so.

You can check statistics, even though I doupt you have not heard them a thousand times already, there are no reasons what so ever to carry around guns or to have asmany guns as the USA has.
There is a reason you are fourth in the world at murders even though you're a western country.
My country of 9 million has 11 murders a year, yours of 300 million has over 12 000 GUN murders a year, not counting all other violent crimes related to the effects.
And I blame your faulty school and social security system for the lack of intelligence in the lower classes resulting in even more murders (40 000 due knife and tool weapons) etc.

All in all I would say that the second ammendment is shit.
I don't get how americans praise themselfs for a document that was modern for over 100 years ago. Thats like christian fundamentalists who let a 2000 year old book tell them how to think and live their lives.

I've heard some stories about Republicans flipping shit at school.  Several people said they're moving, one person told me that their uncle was so Republican that he threatened his family with disownment if they voted for Barack, and I know one girl who said her aunt was so angry at the results that she refuses to invite her (the girl's) mother because she voted for Barack Obama.
Both parties are sore losers and they're stupid for being sore losers.

McCain wanted to go out with a peaceful goodbye and some respectability. It is a shame his fellow supporters, and those who disapproved of Barack Obama, could not allow that to happen. This election has brought out the worst of Conservatives and Republican supporters. This isn’t your day, it’s ours, save face: accept humility and be humble.

Obama '08.

I don't think I've tried to make this point clear, but I will know.

You may think that you've won a tremendous victory because the man you support won office.  I've been there myself when Bush won office, both times, and I'm telling you right now that you're just going to be disappointed.  Obama will never deliver his promises anymore than any politician has delivered his promises since a very long time.  He is not a messiah or savior, and I truly believe that you hold him with such high regards because he simply supports your multicultural ideology; i.e. he is African.

Do any of you recall how fervently I defended Bush's ideas and actions?  In hindsight, I did so only because I believed President Bush to be our "protector," whatever you wish to call him.  I didn't support him because the evidence said he was doing the right thing; I supported him just because I had a romanticized view of him.  Now looking back, he really has hurt the nation, just as much as every president, Congress, etc. has before him.  Obama will be no different, and the loyalty and fervor you are giving this politician is no different than what I gave to Bush.

Four, maybe eight years from now all of you will be talking about how Obama wasn't all that great, and you all will be debating about who next will "save" America.  I can guarantee that.

I'm sorta between propaganda and RomanCollar. I support the right to bear arms, but I believe the arms should be limited. I believe guns like assault rifles and pistols, which have the singular purpose of killing another man, should be banned.

Shotguns and rifles are perfectly fine because they can be used recreationally in hunting, and therefore helps control our ecosystems after we fucked them up.

I'm hoping to buy a nice rifle after college once I'm out of the house and working a steady job.

The reason I'm so judgmental of Obama is I don't support much of anything he believes.  Plus, giving a politician the benefit of the doubt is always a waste of time.  People should always be distrustful of the government, even if the government represented the people in its actions.  If McCain was elected I would feel mostly the same right now, so I'm not being discriminatory in this case!

I know its fun to shoot I was once a conscript. But it must be scary to be in a country where you actually believe that you'd might have to shoot someone in your life, for me that is quite unthinkable.
Quote from: RomanCollarClock;1442672Seek help if the only thing stopping you from murdering is the lack of tools.
Yeah well I have but that is besides the point, sure I got anger management problems but alot of people do.
I have no facts to back me up here but I do believe theyve mentioned it on debates; Access to guns kills alot of children and people who fight within the family.
I do know that more than 6 children a year in the US die due accidents with guns in their homes.
Quote from: RomanCollarClock;1442672I've already given reasons explaining this difference in the debate forum, and it isn't the presence of guns in this country.  As you may have heard, The UK has a ban on handguns, and the amount of knife violence is pretty equal to the amount of gun violence here.
Are you counting knife AND gun violance in the USA against knife violance in the UK?
Quote from: RomanCollarClock;1442672And it isn't poor people either.

Quote from: RomanCollarClock;1442672Why should I?  It seems from your posting that you don't even trust yourself.
Hmmm, how so?
Do you mean lack of self controll or in arguments? I do admit at times I can be flawed in my discussions but I've been drunk alot lately, have petty.

However I fail to see how this is a valid argument to ignore what I said in whole.
Thing is, you can find endless arguments that go both ways, but show me any statistics that prove that civilian gun bearing has any positive side effects except singular feeling of security.
Quote from: RomanCollarClock;1442672I'm not going to give up on what means our citizens have to protect themselves and their families.
Ask yourself; Why do they even have to?
I'm not a nationalist and frankly I don't love my country all that much, I am proud of it sure but I can easily see it's faults and errors.
But atleast me or my family never lives in fear or dread over the day I might actually have to point a gun at another person.
Quote from: RomanCollarClock;1442672Also, the government has proven its unwillingness to protect its own taxpayers, so we have no reason to trust those people.
You elected them.
Quote from: RomanCollarClock;1442672We're on our own.
So... you didn't draw first blood? They did?

No but really, what you said there is hardly an argument: The feeling of abandoment from ones government is felt by alot of people but carrying guns hardly solves anything now does it?
You are a democracy, people are dying all over the world to have the rights you take for granted and yet you feel that your government has failed you and that guns somehow is the salvation?

I hope that is not how you really feel, but do tell me; Youre holding quite high standards of debating and thats grand fun :D

Just to clarify, we don't live in constant fear over here, but the reality of things is that crime and violence are happening, and we have to protect each other from them.  We're not paranoid; we're simply prepared.  I've already stated my gripes about why we're going down the crapper, so I won't risk getting banned again!  My reaction to all of this is simply that we as a people must rely on our family, friends, and any other person who happens to belong to us.

Tell that to the parents of the 6+ children dying each year.
Once again ;alot of statistics showing that guns in homes kill more people than it saves.

And as Mauser said... say, if someone broke into your house.
May be a 16 year old boy who is poor, may be a 50 year old burly man wanting to rape you what do I know, either way... would your first reacton be to draw a gun at him?
I'd feel more secure with like 4 tasers or suchs so I could just shoot first and ask question later.

Crap, my gun is unloaded and locked up in a closet out of sight.  It's not like I sleep with it under my pillow.

If you're attacked by more than one person the taser is pretty much useless.  The power of mace is also iffy, just because somebody who's maced can still fight back against you.  Also, I'd rather have a gun if facing somebody who had a club, knife, or God forbid a gun.

Quote from: PropagandaClock;1443220Tell that to the parents of the 6+ children dying each year.
Once again ;alot of statistics showing that guns in homes kill more people than it saves.

The latest statistic I heard is that about 50 children are killed by guns due to negligence each year.  That's waaaay lower than the amount of gun use in self-defense.

Most of the children's deaths could have been prevented if the parents had kept their guns locked up and taught their children gun safety.  That's why I lock the safety on mine so that it can't be fired unless you have the key.

Quote from: PropagandaClock;1443879I don't think there is any democrat who doesnt actually love/like McCain.
It's Palin and her I'm a edgy teen baby that disgusts me....

I don't mind McCain. Once I started doing research it became a tough decision. Then he chose Palin, news started coming out about her, I determined him to be a shitty decision maker and went for Obama.

Quote from: Flux;1443521Palin are absolutely horrifying. My 9 year old sister is the only other American I know who doesn't know what countries are in NAFTA.

I didn't know what NAFTA was until now, so if you'd asked I wouldn't have known. But it should be pretty damn easy to remember.

That's okay, you weren't next in line to be vice president.

Quote from: SirClock;1444065Is that intended to be funny?
I don't mind the stories about his wife, his time in captivity etc.
He was tortured we know that for sure and he fought for the country and beliefs in a way that would make most modern activist blush.
Now sure the men on the ground had it even worse still but theyre not the ones running.

McCain has done shitloads of cool things before this election, he was the only republican that I didn't hate and that alone made me adore him, he told fellow party members to fuck off, he was hated by alot (ALOT) of party members etc.

But the thing that mattered most to me is that Republicans always try to hide their true agenda, they can never ever just go "yeah we fucked up tough shit" or "we just want that or this and thats why we're doing it" or even going "we put saddam there" instead they always make these alaborate lies, explenations and other shit that just pisses me off. Lying is one thing but explaining the lie with another lie just going to far.
Now McCain never had that problem, he could unblinkingly admit any shit the republican party was responsible for and just accept it as that. He didnt defend it or try to explain it.
And that for me is worth alot.

Now this campaign turned him into a monster.

In his defeat speech he showed me that old McCain and I hope hes still inside there somewhere.

Some of you are blaming the Republicans and some are blaming the Democrats.  Let me help clarify something for all of you:
