QuoteDoctors in Germany say a patient appears to have been cured of HIV by a bone marrow transplant from a donor who had a genetic resistance to the virus.

Some scientists used stemcells, a mutated gene that roughly 1-2% of the european population has, and a bonemarrow transplant to cure someone of AIDS. Holy shit
Burn your condoms!
ah I love this! thanks for sharing!
How dandy, maybe we've finally found a cure to AIDS.

Not really.
Don't tell me the guy that gave the transplant had a genetic resistance to leukemia, too.
Forget the guy that got every disease he could; we need to put that first guy in a tank and harvest his medical secrets!
Damnit. Now how are we going to ethnically cleanse Africa?

Not as subtle or satisfying as slowly killing them with a horrific disease, is it? Besides, it's harder to play dumb when Africa dies from being ravaged by huge explosions; those don't just "happen" like an outbreak does.

You obviously dont understand the idea of "Containment".
Well, Germany can cure AIDS I guess. Here in the greatest country on earth we don't do dealings with stem cells unless we're babykilling moral-haters.
Well atleast we still have cancer.
I've heard about this
it's rather impressive really.

Considering that the guy didn't even HAVE AIDS, and on top of that had leukemia, which could have had a huge affect on the impact of HIV on his body.
Its cool and all for this guy, but it really doesn't help much for anyone else, not to mention the HIV could have just gone into remission.
PLUS since only 1 of 1000 people in Europe have this gene, they would need to have same blood types (and other various factors) to even make a transplant possible, and on top of THAT there is no way a few thousand people could provide enough bone marrow.

no it can't when it's gone, your body has built an immunity, you can only get it if you are re-infected by another mutation of HIV
Stop having Smart-wars. S'not cool.
maybe I watch too many movies but couldnt they isolate this gene and make some sort of vaccine?
Come on guys, they might be on to something! Can't we just enjoy the moment before a new mutation of incurable HIV comes along and wipes out the human race?
Quote from: Maltese;1447559no it can't when it's gone, your body has built an immunity, you can only get it if you are re-infected by another mutation of HIV
To build immunity you'd need to make antibodies, and I thought HIV prevented or messed up that process, which made it so bad. :\

You can't inject a gene into people :)

AIDS.
Quote from: RomanClock;1447595To build immunity you'd need to make antibodies, and I thought HIV prevented or messed up that process, which made it so bad. :\
from my understanding, HIV infects helper T cells, and bear in mind I learned this like 9 years ago in 7th grade health, and helper T cells have some very involved function in the immunity process, so it basically piggy backs off the system that was intended to destroy it and things like it, and weakens that system for other illnesses to get in.
the people who are immune have helper T cells that are to regular T cells what Mr. T is to a regular person, and the Mr. T cells are huge and beat the shit out of HIV like it's nothing.
so no, I don't think they could be reinfected as long as the Mr. T cells are around.

and they basically just injected the gene into this guy in the form of a bone marrow transplant, and with stem cell research, they can clone the bone marrow tissue
Quote from: Maltese;1447605and they basically just injected the gene into this guy in the form of a bone marrow transplant, and with stem cell research, they can clone the bone marrow tissue
I was going to say something along those lines. You can inject a gene; you just need a medium.
Although there is still the issue of babymurder cells in the good ole US of A. I read something in Popular Science not too long ago about how they've found a way to turn adult skin cells into stem cells, though.

We don't because that would be a waste of money. Seriously. AIDS is going to keep spreading no matter what, it'd be better if they just stop populating so that the disease dies off.
That sounded more racist than intended! Hooray for AIDS cure! I hope that when I get cancer, heart disease and diabetes they have surefire cures for it!
Quote from: COUSIN SKEETER;1447592maybe I watch too many movies but couldnt they isolate this gene and make some sort of vaccine?
You can't make a vaccine from a gene, that's a whole different mechanism. We may, however, be able to insert a resistance gene (like the one from this article) or replace defective ones through gene therapy. Something like a viral vector could theoretically insert the gene. For the future..

You're right that HIV targets T-lymphocytes, but you a little off on how the resistance works. A virus like HIV has to attach to a surface protein on a cell in order to dock and inject its genome. The genetic variation in the resistant person codes for a modified surface protein that apparently makes it difficult for HIV to dock, so it can't infect the cell.

AIDS doesn't actually kill you at all. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome means just that: the immune system is deficient. This is mainly because like you said, "HIV fucks up your T-cell count." Since T-lymphocytes are so integral to proper immune response, a deficiency leads to death by normally non-lethal infections. You'll die from the flu.
They didn't inject the gene.. What I think happened is they gave this guy a bone marrow transplant because of his leukemia (cancer of the blood.. bone marrow produces blood cells, so cancer free marrow should produce normal blood cells). But the marrow was probably from someone with the resistance gene, so the guy got the bonus of resistant T-cells, which inhibited the virus's function.
Quote from: RomanClock;1447723If this were really a cure to AIDs or HIV then it would all over the news. But this isn't even close.
Right, every expert in the article pretty much said that. Maybe in a few years?
Interesting article though.
Edit: apparently HIV affects several lymphocyte subgroups, not just the T-Cell, but that doesn't really change what I said

whatever, you get what I mean
You see the cells are like a cab and... the Aids are like black people. Certain cabs won't pick up black people. So if you fill the streets with cabs that don't pick up blacks the blacks won't go anywhere and will eventually all die.

The man got cured from HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. That's a big step towards curing AIDS as well, even if it doesn't cure people that actually have AIDS.
If they come up with a cure/vaccine in n years, only the people with AIDS will die at that point, but they will be the last.
well in a perfect world at least.

lol. should I explain this one ?
if he's wrong yes
because that sounds right to me
Okay, sorry. I'm looking at my posts, and I'm probably coming off as a bitchy know-it-all.
AIDS isn't a typical disease like cholera or bubonic plague or something like that. Like I said before, it's really just the aggregated symptoms of having a deficient immune system. Basically your body gets beat to hell by the little guys that would normally be no problem.
So if you somehow vanquished HIV from your body, someone should theoretically be able to bounce back as their immune system rebounds. I guess it wouldn't cure some of the really nasty stuff (like if you contracted cancer during the time with AIDS because of increased change of genetic mutation), but if the cure came early enough, the person should get well.
You can see this now when someone with AIDS takes anti-HIV drugs long enough to put the virus into remission. When they go off the drug and the side-effects wear off, they should feel healthy in the time before the virus regroups.
You can't just cure AIDS.
:(
enlighten me, BlackberryClock
Though systematically curing/vaccinating people would decrease the chances of contracting HIV
again significantly.
I'm not even sure if HIV mutates (enough) to overcome vaccinations like the flu does.
edit: that was a sneaky edit Blackberry!

I didn't say you could cure AIDS, I said you could do away with the virus causing it, through curing or otherwise.

It's clear from your previous post that clarification was needed.
As far as HIV being a quick mutator? Yes.. hell yes. The AIDS virus is often cited as one of the most readily available examples of evolution in action. It's ability change and avoid drugs is one of reasons it's such a big problem.

but technically curing all the people infected with HIV and putting them in quarantaine so they can't relapse would eventually get rid of AIDS, right?

If someone is born with AIDS, and we didn't notice it, the system would happen again. We'd need to keep some sort of AIDS police to protect everyone from the AIDS monster. It'd be like the '90s again, until Captain Planet comes to tell us all about how AIDS isn't as bad as everyone thinks, and we're back where we started.
Quote from: Update(<);1447965but technically curing all the people infected with HIV and putting them in quarantaine so they can't relapse would eventually get rid of AIDS, right?
Theoretically if you isolated everyone and all animals with AIDS you would get rid of it.
Quote from: RomanClock;1448068Theoretically if you isolated everyone and all animals with AIDS you would get rid of it.
But then many weeks later researches would go into the quarantined area and they'd find one sole survivor and bring her to the lab for analysis and she would then infected everybody else and before you know it infected people are running circles around the Eiffel tower.

It's theoretically, things like that only happen in reality
Quote from: PirateClock;1448074But then many weeks later researches would go into the quarantined area and they'd find one sole survivor and bring her to the lab for analysis and she would then infected everybody else and before you know it infected people are running circles around the Eiffel tower.
That isn't neccessarily true. HIV can only be spread through exchange of bodily fluids. I'll let you interpret that however you want.
I don't really like the idea of quarantine to begin with. I think a better idea in theory would be to have HIV+ people were special medical bracelets or something, but that would probably make the already-existing social stigma attached to HIV/AIDS worse, and might end up being kind of like those armbands that the Nazis made everyone wear. The best idea is simply to continue medical research and try to develop a cheap, readily-available cure or vaccine for the virus. That way, either the virus will no longer be a major concern because nobody could be infected, or if somebody contracts HIV, they can just take the proper medication and get well, making less of a big deal. Of course, both are a while away from being developed. The coolest thing that could happen would be if there was some huge HIV outbreak and almost everybody died and the remaining survivors had to repopulate the earth with their HIV-resistant DNA. That would be awesome.
wasn't that a 28 weeks later reference though
