Having military/officer training myself I can only say that they did the correct thing in everything but the punches in his back which were totally uneccery.
But breaking down a person violanty and fast is part of preceedure in which you rather cause the suspect harm than your comrades.

My dad was going to be arrested for being Drunk and Disorderly because he was walking home from the pub and he'd injured his leg so he had a limp.
