Title: My life-long wish for a super power is coming true
Post by: Blue on December 10, 2008, 11:46:24 AM
If you could choose any super power what would it be?
For me: the ability to control time. Specifically to slow it down and maybe even stop it.
I have wanted this power all my life.

Amazingly, to some small degree I have learned how to do this, in a very limited capacity (and only by my perception of course). However, the older I get the more control I seem to have over it...

Those who know me, know I have some sleeping disorders. If I don't get enough sleep I have severe sleep paralysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis). I have over the last few years learned to control it to a degree. I can choose when to fall asleep (when tired enough), and can sleep with my eyes partially open. I can even decide not to have a dream in this state, or I can design a dream to my liking. Dreams in this state are the most vivid and realistic one can have, so this can be fun, or it can be amazingly terrifying (thus, learning to control it has helped me sleep better).

I skip the normal stages of sleep, and go into a sort of trance where I am half asleep (deep rem) and half awake (able to have normal conscious thoughts, and am aware of the world around me). In this state I cannot move, at all, it is every bit as powerful as full body paralysis.

I used to wonder why I could have seemingly an hour-long vivid dream in the span of 30 seconds when I fell into this state in high school, now I know why. When I go into that state, my perception of time is altered.

I know this now, because lately when I entered the trance (for lack of a better word) I was in a public place (taking a nap while parked next to a busy street). I could hear and see cars and people around me (although vision is not very good when in this state, as the visual part of my brain turns to a dream-centric state, and can be blurry or distorted).

As I allowed myself to gradually drift deeper into the trance (trying very hard not to fight it), sounds started slowing down, the cars gradually decreased in speed, my entire body tingles, like the feeling you get after you sleep on your arm. My heart feels like it slows down. It is a very strange feeling, but not all-together unpleasant.

As I drift deeper, the cars around me begin to sound like an mp3, where the compression gets higher and higher as it plays... Like the Doppler effect, but more severe. Sounds get almost choppy as they get lower and lower sounding...

Obviously I'm not actually affecting time around me, but just my own perception. I still think it is quite amazing that it is possible without drugs. The only thing I had eaten/drank the last time I did this was a pop-tart and a Monster (although the caffeine and ginseng seems to help somehow, it is not necessary).

Now, to stop the nay-sayers. No, this is not a dream, I'm describing. This has happened on numerous occasions, and it wasn't till today that I finally decided it is a real phenomenon and not just my imagination.

The question I'm wondering, is how? How does this work? In the process of skipping sleeping stages some areas of one's brain temporarily shut down (or at least reduce in usage as they rest). Instead of taking in all our usual external stimuli our minds turn inward. Perhaps that smaller loop (without the need for bodily control), at least in my case allows my brain in it's limited capacity to speed up in it's other functions... Causing time to appear to slow down on my external stimuli? Keep in mind I am still able to think to some conscious degree in this state. I'm sure this happens to many people when they sleep and are sleep deprived, but usually external stimuli are cut off to a degree that they are not aware that it is happening.

Another possibility, is that I have stumbled on some odd kind of personal hypnosis. Contrary to popular believe, hypnosis doesn't put you to sleep, but makes you hyper-aware.

Or perhaps it's a combination of the two.

Now, if I can only find a way to do this without the paralysis, then I would truly be onto something...

but aside from jokes like that I would go for complete time control too.

Holy shit we have a chronokinetic in the clock crew!
And yes, form all forms of telekinesis I would probably choose to manipulate time too.

Blue, that is incredibly cool.

I've actually done research into a similar topic, myself.
Have you ever heard of something called "Lentation" before?

It's a process by which you slow down your perception of time, through the very opposite of what you do.  You induce adrenaline flow through your body, which slows down your perception of things, as you become hyper aware.  By training yourself to basically incite an adrenaline rush at will, you would be able to do just what you were descibing, slow down perception of time.

It's a very interesting concept.  Makes you consider the endless potential of the human mind.  Not all good drugs come from outside your body ;)

Haven't heard that term before... But I've tried that before. But no matter how time appears to fly or slow down I've never been able to see and hear a difference, until now. It's just like in the movies... like bullet time... except I can't fucking move. And I highly doubt I could get it to slow down enough to see a bullet, but I could probably hear supercomressed audio as if it were playing in real time... hmmm... I feel an experiment coming on.

it's a long process, and it's supposedly very difficult.  I'll have to do more research on it.

A lot of the reprogramming of your brain deals with things that require very quick reactions.  Such as when a cup falls from a counter and you catch it before it hits the ground.

I've induced the affect playing DDR once or twice, on some of the very difficult songs.  I focused purely on the arrows and for a second or two things slowed down a LOT.
Haven't played DDR for a while though :/

Seems like a waste using such powerful mind concepts on DDR.

Actually, seems like a waste using any time at all on DDR... But that's just me.

*chuckles*

I never focused on trying to make it happen, I was just giving an example of a time that I'd experienced it spontaneously.

The reason I didn't do much is because it was mostly only practical in combat situations, where your reflexes are all you have.  Though adrenaline puts a huge strain on your body (iirc), and I really had no reason to.

I would like to have the power to control the world with my mind. For instance, I'm walking along, and I see this beautiful girl, and I think I'd like to see her naked, and so all her clothes fall off. And she's scrabbling around to get them back on again, but even before she can get her knickers on, I've seen everything. Yeah. I've seen it all.

lucid dreaming

or

astral projection.

you should look into those 2 things. I think you will be surprised with the things you will read and the things you have done yourself. also read about how to induce these things.

Quote from: Blue;1033988Aside from the other one I mentioned, I like doing dogie style while the woman I'm fucking is having oral sex with another woman... Requires a very large bed.

I also like fucking one woman dogie style while she is fucking another chick using a vibrator/strap on... It's the closest you can come to fucking two chicks with the same cock.

I haven't ever tried it :(, but I'd like to sit on the edge of a sofa while one chick sits in my lap (anal), while another chick sitting on the floor is finger fucking her (vaginally) and sucking her clit.

I don't believe in astral projection, but I have been lucid dreaming for almost 20 yrs now. I had night terrors as a child so sleeping has always been weird for me.

But yea, in the sleep paralysis state, I can picture any place and "transport" there, feel textures, cold, heat, smells, and sometimes tastes. Of course it's all coming from memories and imagination, I have no delusions on that.. It's like dreaming on steroids, and can be quite fun now that I can control it and prevent it from always turning into a horrific compressed nightmare from which I cannot awaken. :P

I'm doing lucid dreaming for 2 years now. its awesome :]

and astral projection. I can do that too, not been doing it for that long 2 months at most. its really all just a matter of practice. let me explain it to you in a simplistic way.

normal dream:  your in a bubble a dense bubble you cant interact with the outside world everything happens inside your head.

lucid dream: same as the normal dream but you have the ability to control your dream and direct the way its going at.

astral projecting: your dream bubble is no longer a bubble that limits you to your own mind. you are free to explore the universe in the body that you use in your dream state. but this can be dangerous however.

astral projecting doesnt have nothing to do with sleeping really though. so maybe thats why you dont think the way you do blue. its just about putting your body to sleep and not your mind. and then detaching your mind from your body.
I induce this with meditation. its quite powerfull.

lol I dont know if this helps you though.

actually, no, it is indeed an ability, every one has it, when you are at risk your brain start slowing down the things in the same kind as a movie, it induces more frames to your senses (Sound, Vision) but actually having control over it is kinda cool

Well, let me put it this way... I don't believe I can actually mentally leave my body, but as for fooling my body/mind that I'm in any other place... That I've mastered. Within minutes of deep concentration I can easily "feel" like I'm moving through walls, into other rooms and the like... But I personally believe it is just a matter of will power and self-hypnosis. I'm not one of those people who think my mind can interact with others on some other plane of existence... I used to, as a child... cause who wouldn't want that to be true. I just don't feel there is any real scientific evidence of it... Wish there was.

The human brain is basically just an extremely complex biochemical computer, so unless there's some kind of secret Internet for brains, I don't think telepathy or any kind of seperation of the mind from the body is possible without using actual physical technology like wires or implanted wi-fi antennas. The one thing that paranormal folks and the like keep forgetting about the mind is that it's limited to the physical organ that perpetuates it. The mind isn't mystical in the least.

Its simply a function of brain usage. As you let parts of your brain turn off or "sleep," it simply reprioritizes certain functions. Just like if you have a single program running on your computer, the less input and processes you use (like sight, hearing, movement) the faster your brain will function. Basically you're just using less resources allowing you to think faster.

This was my theory as well... a brain cannot be over-clocked, but we can close down some of the background services. At least thats the theory.

I hope not, specifically because Derren Brown, unlike a lot of other illusionists, doesn't operate under the pretense of having some kind of magical power, and fully admit's it'a all illusions and mind tricks
