Title: Bill Murray Award Thread
Post by: SouvlakiClock on December 16, 2008, 04:43:04 PM
You know the drill, i was waiting for someone else to make this thread but since most of you are chewing at the bit for the award i decided to make the thread.

Post your Bill Murray Award here and we will vote on it in 4 or 5 days.

...I was deliberately not giving out participation awards for this, so that people would hopefully just be happy with the fact that they had done a flash, but if you guys want awards so much then go ahead.

I demand a medal for the Bill Murray Space Jam Series! It took 27 years to make and I'm not getting beaten to number one by fucking Kanye West! What the hell do I look like Axl Rose? Fuck that guy and his gay braids and while we're at it fuck the police!

Someone should draw the Bill Murray in Joliet Jane's preloader.

By the way, I think participation awards are less an award and more like a historical record.

awards should be given for participation. motivation is motivation, and rewards for participation in an event is only positive reinforcement.

There's motivation and there's bribery. For an example "I'm sure motivated to do a flash and gain the respect of my peers" and then there's "Oh boy I can't wait to add another icon under my name to make myself look important." And yes I see the irony considering I've got 14 awards.

I understand the idea of awards as historical recognition, but the fact remains that a lot of people will participate in an event and make a half arsed flash just to get an award. I propose we get rid PARTICIPATION awards and only use awards for competitions.

This will get the quality of flash higher, as people strive to achieve actual meaningful awards. hopefully, consequently, if these decent flash are on show then it will motivate others to make some flash not for awards but for the pleasure of making it and showing it and receiving criticism or praise, so as to improve.

Taking the idea of historical evidence/recognition into account, I think it would make a lot more sense to have a short list of the users most recent flash right under their avatar, instead of, or just5 above, the awards. They could be little icons, even thumbnails.

Maybe this could work with a clockportal system if that ever comes back, and it seems to me a good idea to showcase a persons flash under their name, seeing as that's what we are meant to be about.

I mean quality not as in 10 minute long serious flash. just flash that is good. that can be short spammy but funny or long and serious, or anywhere inbetween. just something that people have put some effort into, that somebody else in their right mind may want to watch. most spam flash just consists of a few jpegs floating about and then an irritatingly loud scream at the end. that isn't funny.

Also, yes I very much agree that Bill Murray week was a fantastic success, and think everyone who made a flash just for the fun of making a silly flash is brilliant.

I mostly make spam regardless of getting a participation award or not.
Having a lot awards doesn't neccesarely  mean you're a great artist, and great artists don't neccesarely have a lot of awards.

If people only make a half-assed flash for a 20*20 pixel image, I guess that's their problem. Like Snake says, it's a nice representation of what users have contributed to (regardless of quality).

You said that you only did a flash for the award, you're being a dick.

I dunno, maybe for the fact that you should be wanting to do flash to improve, to do flash just to do it, not to win a bunch of pixels.

Because you probably just want to show it off. I'd agree entirely, if this was a competition, but this is an award that everyone gets, regardless of effort.

I like the fact that you tried regardless, and I know what you meant, but the way that you expressed it in the first post was wrong.

Also, we're a flash community, so unless in competitions, awards shouldn't be a motivation to do flash.

because it's absolutely ridiculous that after 7 years or so of people doing flash purely because they enjoy making it and showcasing it and being proud of their work, or making people laugh, we have been reduced to only putting effort in when we are assured a small picture under a bigger picture on an internet forum

But it is the truth, everyone is just trying to pretend it isn't.

This is how I would rank award policies:
1. Get rid of awards <--BEST
2. Only participation awards
3. Competition and participation awards
4. Just competition  <--WORST
Moving them inside user profiles would be fine by me too.

I think both a pixel award and beating out other clocks are bad reasons to make flash.  Both are higher-up attempts to manipulate clocks into making flash.  I think competition is worse than participation awards though - because only competition makes rivals out of the flash makers, resentment for the people trying their hardest, and losers out of almost everyone.  I don't think the extra flash competition produces are worth it.

I think the only decent way to get someone else to make a flash is to make a flash of your own that inspires them.  That's how the Clock Crew began..

Regarding what Update and Snake said, maybe we should split pixel images into two categories:
-Records(Participation Awards)
-Awards(Winning Awards, e.g Best Plot for a writing contest)

Regardless of what we end up doing with i think we should definitely do this

also zombielincoln makes some good points and i think we should just scrap the system. maybe keep what we have but not give out anymore. and move them to the profiles

I wouldn't mind if they were moved to your profile, just as long as we keep em somewhere. I like looking at them.

In profile awards sounds good, then you aren't flashing them about being all elitist and they are still there as a sort of record of what you've accomplished as snake is saying. Update is right, it worked with post count, I never look at anyone's post count anymore unless I genuinely wanna know it, which is rare and I think if the same thing came about for awards that would be good.

Of course completely scrapping them is my first preference I just think this is also a good idea.
