Title: Lost Season 5
Post by: iced tea clock on January 24, 2009, 07:46:05 PM
I just watched the first 2 episodes and I liked them.
I generally dig stories about time traveling anyway. ;) I hope they will execute this well in the course of the season.
Looks like they got rid of the whole flashback/flashforward thing and replaced it with jumping around the 3 different timelines.
Faraday was kinda annoing though, with his smart-ass attitude. And why did Desmond get the memory 3 years later? He should have got it a few days after he left the island, when Faraday met him at the hatch in his timeline, unless the time for the people on the island progresses extremely fast (like the already indicated it in season4?).

Also, Faraday (I think the time-travel scientist) and Desmond are excessively awesome

Is everyone happy with the way the show is heading? I'm going to have to be annoying vague, because I still haven't been able to put my finger on exactly what I find so irksome about this time travel stuff... but does no one else feel it's a little... naff? Another problem, for me, is the motivation for the O6; I just don't buy the fact that they all feel so very guilty, more specifically, that the guilt would ruin Jack's life. The writers make it sound as if they had selfishly sacrificed their fellow lostees for their own rescue, but who did they leave? Locke: dead. Jin: they think died heroically. Juliet: only Jack gives a shit. That leaves Sawyer and... Rose and Bernard. They didn't even willingly sacrifice them (unless I'm misremembering). Going back to the timetravel stuff... the mystical white-haired oracle... the island's magical fate-powers... the ghosts... it just all seems like the kind of sci-fi stock twists that Lost had only hinted at vaguely before, and I thought that the show was above. The way they're letting the characters fly through time you know that the four toed statue will be a lostee who was sent back WAY in time and lost a toe, Adam and Eve will be one of the couples (Bernard and Rose, I suspect), Jacob will be one of the lostees, the smoke monster will be something to do with a lostee... it seems a very glib and unsatisfactory was of tying everything up. I hope that all made sense.

I'd say give the writers mmore credit than that. I was afraid a good deal of the mysteries would just be "lostee's dunnit via time travel" but I have enough confidence. I feel that Hurley and Jack would be upset over leaving, mainly because Hurley is childishly good-natured and Jack was obsessed with the fact that he was the leader of the group, and it's probably more of a personal failure to him than a let down of the group (absolutely not to say that he doesn't care about them though, I'm sure he does). The time travel thing would be better if it were a tad morre subtle, but as long as it's still handled the way it is right now (more of a plot device than a plot impedence) I feel it will turn out okay. Seriously though, the shows worth watching just for Desmond and Faraday. I also feel the direction has been better the last two seasons, or certainly better than season three at least. I do have to agree with a lot of what you said though, but overall I'm going to give the writers the benefit of the doubt.

Truth drug? What shitty writing. The acting in that scene is cringeworthy, especially the spaced-out hysterics.

Sayid has become such a badly written character - his personality is mercurial; he'll just flip from reticent, philosophical and conscientious, to a cold motherfucking badass, to mr. sensitive; from sadistic fuck to mr. pacifist, and, in that awful Russian-carpark scene; to a clueless moron. That little scene was fucking awful; such bald exposition, and Sayid's character is portrayed as a gormless puppet, dependent on Ben's orders; whereas before he was the only one who saw through Linus' lies. What was so genius about the writing of Locke's character was that he was a mysterious, knife-wielding hunter in the first season, and you really wanted to make him the hero of the thing, but in reality he's a fucking chump. All his life. To be fair, they've kept that aspect of Locke's character consistant, but for all the other characters they seem to have forgotten to have their actions reflect their personalities. Instead this show is now about cliched time travel plot devices.

Again, time doesn't work that way.

Secondly, what are you talking about? Locke was in the coffin. Ben killed chilled him. Ben, after attacking Penny, got on the plane with Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Sayid (with Locke in the back). Ben is already back on the island.

Locke has already seen Ben on the island and has chosen not to take his revenge on him. Presumably, he feels that Ben too was just following the prophecies of his death. He's also the leader of the Hostiles (Others) now anyways.

I think what he meant was Ben might die from the injuries sustained in the plane crash

Faraday episodes ftw!!

I hadn't thought of the numbers thing, that would make sense on some level. The only snag being Hurley's lottery numbers. Without them it makes sense that they were just a perfectly innocuous serial code that got re-used a few times and due to time travel appeared to be controlling Hurley's life. But the fact that every single lotto number was matched perfectly, it blows it out.

Tangent: About 3 years ago the Irish lotto numbers came out as 4 8 15 16 23 24
I swear that's 100% true. Fucking nuts. The fact that the wrong number is just the right one reversed blows my mind. Unless it was rigged. Then it's just normal :D

Actually, Hurley being the origin of the numbers is the only thing that makes sense, because it would mean his lottery numbers WERE completely random and weren't influenced - he just knew what they were going to be

Wow that doesn't make any sense at all if you're not me. I can't explain it.
Title: Lost Season 5
Post by: Poltergeist on April 17, 2009, 02:49:24 AM
Quote from: Franklin G. Hamilton;1561935It doesnt make sense becuase if you watched the episode this week, the numbers were the serial number for the door on the hatch, hurley has nothing to do with it.

also they are key numbers in the valenzetti equation, which hurley still has nothing to do with. also it wouldnt explain how those numbers won the lottery when hurley played them. the numbers are just important, and at this point, not the result of anything except the island

Ah, I live in England and the newset episode doesn't air til sunday.

What I thought wsa that Hurley was the origin of the umbers, like, he told the numbers to the crazy guy who repeated them, who would then go on to tell them to Hurley in the past, which would mean Hurley was the cause of the numbers - If Hurley didn't tell the crazy guy the numbers, he wouldn't repeat them, and hurley wouldn't use them in the lottery, they would STILL be the winning numbers in the lottery, however.
Title: Lost Season 5
Post by: Biblo on April 19, 2009, 09:00:30 AM
Quote from: Franklin G. Hamilton;1562147its already been explained that the crazy guy got the numbers from the radio tower on the island that broadcasted them continuously until the french team crashed on the island and rousseau wrote over the message with an SOS. this was the reason hurley was on the plane in the first place. he followed the numbers to australia, found out nothing then headed back to LA on oceanic 815.

this is, atleast what i can remember from season 2 or 3.

so this circle would only really happen if hurley is the one that makes the numbers broadcast. it still doesnt make hurley the cause of the numbers, but more like a tool for the island. because the island wants hurley there, and the island makes the numbers important, not hurley.

yeah but if hurley causes the broadcast it takes a lot of mystery out of the numbers. maybe they were chosen as the serial code because of the valenzetti equation. then that influenced hurley to broadcast them. outside of the lottery everything is now mundane

My theoruy was the person possessing Locke was an older version of Jacob, which is why a loophole was needed for Jacob to be killed.

I know that, I thought the two of them looked very similar. It makes sense, too:
Older Jacob has lived through this before, and knows how it will end, so he is insanely pissed when his younger self does not listen to his warnings, so much that he wants to kill him. However, he can't because then he would also die, ergo in order for Jacob to kill his younger self, he needs a loophole

Quote from: CadillacClock;1580569That's even more ludicrous than the current set up. Especially since they existed at the same time and at relatively the same age.

Secondly, you can't kill yourself (younger) and still exist in the present. Time doesn't work that way. Not on LOST and not according to Physics.

Hahahahahahahahahaaha oh my God you brought physics into this

They can be there are the same time due to time travelling, they can appear similar ages due to Richards magic age-relief. I'm just offering up an idea I think is neat, plus I said a loophole was required in order for younger him to die - as hardcore a LOST fan as I am, I don't think the writers actually care abouth their own "rules"

Quote from: CadillacClock;1580589Jesus Christ, you're stupid. What was Faraday? What did he do for a living? Eloise? Whidmore? They are all or have been physicist and they have all followed the simple rule that time is linear. As it is.

Yes, they do. They do for this. That's why they're following and have trumped up that it is a linear time scale. There is no loop hole in time. That would destroy the foundation of it.

Desmond?

You're tooting Faradays horn like this is an actual absolute science and he is the be-all end-all of knowledge on it - if the writers should choose, they will do whatever they want, and they've already shown they can do whatever they want with time by having Desmond screw around with his past and constantly mention loopholes - you know, the key theme of the last episode this series?

Finally, LOST is a show were a dead mans body is possessed featuring a monster made out of smoke, time travel, dissapearing horses and magical cursed numbers. If you keep thinking LOST if going to have a scientific and explainable ending (or at least one using real science) you'll probably be dissapointed

I'm fairly sure he did - unless we assume that when he was in the army he suddenly went "WOAH WERE AM I???" then immediately forget why he said that without anyone bringing it up again.

And also let's not forget he convinced Penny not to move - and finally if he didn't change time we're meant to assume he just went to Oxford to look for a man he had never met before and did not know for no actual reason the first time?

Quote from: CadillacClock;1581083Hey! I bet if I go back in time I could give your mom an abortion and then you wouldn't be born, right? I mean, that way I would NEVER have read this post. That's how time works, right?

The most fun here is that you keep talking about this as if it is an actual science.
Seriously, J.J. Abrams does not give a shit, he just wants to make a kooky sci-fi. Watch one episode of Fringe and you'll be convinced he's willing to break his own rules if it suits where he wants the story to go.

Quote from: CadillacClock;1581083No, you have not been following the bouncing ball hard enough. That DID NOT change the past. It only reflected onto the PRESENT.

So something that did not actually happened affected the present? Yes - that makes complete sense.

I'm sorry guys I know I should be working way harder because Lost is such serious buisiness
