I'm doing a case study on the Watchmen for my film course, and I had heard that Snyder had actually talked about the CGI for the squid, but there were many conflicting stories.

Good movie to do a case study on by the way, been in production for 20 years, lots of lawsuits.

This reminded me that i still need to read the comic before i see the movie, i want to be one of those people that goes: meh, the comic/book was better.  I "bought" the entire series a while ago but never got around to read it, i shall do so now!

he dropped it because it required too much back story for it to work.
that's the only story i've heard. its exclusion raises a few questions.
par example:
the tales from the black freighter. yeah, it's not in the film but they're releasing an animated version and such. without the book's artist designing the squid, what relevance does it have?
bubastis. adrian veidt's mutant cat thing. never gets named in the film, never even really acknowledged by the characters. it's just sort of there. without veidt's genetic research for the squid also leading to bubastis, what the hell is it? i can't imagine what it was like watching it having not read the book. "ok, so... veidt has a pet... mutant... tiger.....
what?"

Also the movie calls them the watchmen when they're the minutemen right?

I'm gonna see it, but I still have the same problems with the original story that I aired a few months back when there was another thread for this.

no
they call the Crimebusters the Watchmen. the 70s team

it is a little annoying but it gets said like 2 or 3 times and is never really focused on
it ruins the poetry of the title though

A few things, I like that the "watchmen" are never outed, and it can be seen as either the group of heroes, the government or Manhatten/Veidt depending on your view

How did they do the ending without the monster?

and can you say any more about it than "s'pretty good yeah"?
Title: I HAVE SEEN WATCHMEN
Post by: Biblo on March 05, 2009, 04:08:32 PM
Quote from: Marlix Wright;1535023What was the significance of the title again?

it's a quote of Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? or Who watches the watchmen?

basically it means who makes sure those in charge and those with the power are not falling to the same vices that they are supposed to be guarding against.

within the book it's used by those who are opposed to the superheroes, they graffiti it everywhere and use it as their slogan. basically, who appointed these so-called heroes?

when the team gets re-named to "the watchmen" in the film, not only does it paint the team up as pretentious and self-inflated, the slogan now means "who makes sure those exact guys aren't bad guys?" rather than a more philosophical stand point

Quote from: CrustClock;1535195How did they do the ending without the monster?

and can you say any more about it than "s'pretty good yeah"?

i am, and i don't want to be spoiling it by getting into the nitty gritty details

at the end
Veidt's plan is the same except instead of using the threat of alien invasion as a way to scare people into peace, he detonates reactors designed by Dr.Manhattan to create the illusion that Manhattan has become angry with humanities threats to nuke each other and decided to give a demonstration of his power and is now watching over us, ready to kill us all if we start warring again, as many believed him to be some sort of god, or at least to have the powers of one. this alone is scary enough for humanity
i prefer the comic's ending but i don't know how they could've done it right without the movie being a shit lot longer

Just got back from watching the watchmen, sup clockcrew.

I found it was meh compared to the book. I mean, it was ok, but they left out shitloads of stuff, like all the minor characters who were ordinary people. They also left out a great deal of the bit when Rorschach reveals his origin and simultaneously mindfucks his psychologist, and the bit about the genetically modified alien monster, and Hollis Mason's murder, and all the changes to the world that were caused by Dr. Manhattan's contributions to science. It was just kind of like "So yeah, there were superheroes. Oh, and they're bored now. They're coming back." Also, I found that Adrien Viedt was really unlikable, compared to how he was in the book. I mean, in the book, he was someone you could admire, even if he did kill millions of people in a flawed plan to save the world from nuclear war. In the book, it really felt like he was the pinnacle of human potential. I don't know. I guess I'm being nitpicky, and it would have been way longer with all this stuff in it, but it just bugs me. To me, they left out a lot of the stuff that really made the book.

EDIT: Also, I almost won a T-shirt and copy of the soundtrack, but there were people in the front rows who knew the answers to the trivia questions. Meh, merchandise.

yeah true, but none of these things really drive the plot forward (apart of course for the squid but they replaced that as it came with a lot of extra backstory) and really just make the world more believable and interesting. this is the main reason why it works better in the graphic novel medium, film doesn't have time for things like that. the murder of hollis mason was actually shot but they took it out because the studio were pushing for running time and snyder realised the film worked without it. apparently we will see a cut with it on dvd in the future

comic: images and words combined
book: a load of pages bound together

it is a comic book. or you can call it a graphic novel if you like. it WAS released in issues. 12 issues over a year. it now comes neatly bound in one volume for ease of reading, storage and purchase.

it is an american production made by two englishmen. it is not japanese.
it is not a manga

I think it was his main plan, he knew that Viedt was willing to kill millions upon millions of people, so one more death would have been nothing, and he knew that he could never take Viedt down, Viedt being superhuman, so he must have thought that he was going to his death.

I saw it today. I thought for the most part they did a really good job. Most of the changes they made were for the best, the only ones I really had beef with were:
1. Veidt wasn't likeable. All the people I was with who hadn't read the comic knew that he was the bad guy right away because he looked like a nazi and talked like a bond villain. They needed to cast someone more likeable as well as more burly. Veidt's supposed to be the most traditionally superhero-looking character and changing that kind of ruined the twist.

2. Dan seeing Rorschach's death and getting angry about it. It didn't ruin the ending but it did make it a much less intelligent ending. Rorschach is supposed to die alone and the fact that no one knows or cares makes the ending so much more powerful. I think they kind of missed the point.
I also didn't like John vanishing instead of walking up the wall.

Besides that I thought it was great. Nowhere near as great as the book but still probably the best comic book adaptation so far.

The intro with The Times They Are A-Changing was particularly good.

Yeah, it is true that a lot of those things didn't really contribute to the plot, but I found that they were the parts that I enjoyed the most about it. After all, Watchmen is about storytelling, not storyline. For instance, I particularly like how the reader was introduced to the newsvendor, boy, psychologist, etc. It served a very real role in the telling the story, in that it forced the reader to care about the deaths of all those innocent people in the end. I found it to be a really ingenious way of counteracting the rule of "one death is a tragedy; a million are a statistic". I mean, it wasn't just "loads of people were killed", it was "Oh, shit, we've just lost characters! We know those guys! That's horrible!" It was like finding out that a few of your friends were murdered, versus hearing about a bombing on the news. That's what I found, anyway.

EDIT: Also, when me and my stepfather were walking out of the theatre, he said "Well, that was a pretty stupid movie." I guess that might have made me self-conscious about the bits of it that I liked, causing me to deliberately try to dislike it. I found it took some effort to get into, but then, I found the same thing with the book.

You're right, and it's a shame that they couldn't fit some of the minor characters' stories into the film. I think it would have worked much better as a mini-series, but probably still not as well as it did as a comic.

It's still nice to see different versions of things for some reason.

Very well put. If more people could figure out the difference between the two there'd be a much greater appreciation of literary and film arts in the world. And less knuckle dragging goons who insist that a film is shit because "UGH THERE WAS NO PLOT UGH"

Quote from: Marlix Wright;1536448How the hell did he know he could stop bullets?

Also I think you're looking too much into the repressed thing.

Rorschach knew that Veidt could stop bullets because Veidt was famous for being able to do that as part of his superhero persona. Many didn't believe he could though. Either way it doesn't matter, Rorschach doesn't use a gun you might notice.
Rorschach didn't know exactly what was going to happen, but he knew there was a huge cataclysmic plot at hand, and his death would be likely. Think about his last journal entry, he looks back on his life and talks about being happy that he never compromised himself.

Also, Rorschach's sexuality is up for debate, as is the ending, as is the morality of Veidt's plot. All these threads are intentionally ambiguous to cause the reader to ponder and think about these issues. Consider this, it's been 23 years since the comic first began publishing and there's still no definitive answer to things such as Rorschach's sexuality. There are hints at it in the book, but nothing to definitively suggest either way. It's all part of the wonderfully rich tapestry that is Watchmen.

They've done a separate animated version of it that will be on DVD and probably eventually get spliced into some big huge director's cut version.

Well that's the beauty, it is up to YOU to decide who was right and wrong in doing what.

And that is one thing they fucked up in the movie. John and Veidt didn't havbe that final talk at the end, and they made it pretty clear that, in the movie at least they DO use his journal in the crank file instead of leaving its possible usage ambiguous,

i forgot to mention the revelation that the Comedian was Laurie's father was terribly done in the film. really blunt and hamfisted. considering how MAGNIFICENTLY it's done in the comic, it pales in comparison. they could've easily taken a similar approach in the film.

Really I think the film lacked enough character development to do a lot of things the comic did well.

Oh I forgot about that, yeah that was pretty poorly done.

I thought the rape scene was a bit weak as well.

It didn't really detract from the story it was just a big shame.

Saw it today.

Overall I liked it, but there were a few very slow moments, and for some reason the ending (I mean just the last five minutes) felt very out of place. My friends and I agreed it was cool when it wasn't being a superhero movie. The prison fight scenes and saving people from the burning building were fucking dumb all-around, and they should have used that time for Veidt and Manhattens talk, or at least had Veidt explain why he had such famtasmical abilities and a magic awesome tiger thing.Actually, the only thing I'm really dissapointed in was that it didn't describe the way Dr. Manhatten viewed time the same way, which I really liked in the comic with the whole mars scene. ALSO ALSO Nixon had a really bad funny fake nose. Still, cool movie.

Also, Rorscach was slapped about by his mother and was happy when she died, right? He also made some kind of snide remark about silloheutte being a victim of her own lifestyle.

Also on the storytelling VS storyline thing, I have to agree, although there are some movies that do storytelling well but don't have a storyline (such as Hard Candy) that fail. The thing is, Watchmen felt very story-driven in the film besides the few instances of narrative, which I actually thought were the best parts of the movie (flashbacks for the Comedian, Dr. Manhattens backstory)

I think the woman playing Silk Spectre I wasn't really good enough to pull that scene off. She cocked up the bit leading up to it as well. If they'd got someone really good that whole section would have been way better.

I saw it at the midnight premier and then once more the next day. I was amazed at how un-disappointed I was. I liked all the little touches put in there specifically for people who read the book, like Hooded Justice having a russian accent and one of the computers in Veidt's fortress saying something like "S.Q.U.I.D INITIATED". Also, the soundtrack was bombin' and I loved the "Times They Are A Changin'" intro sequence.

saw it last night, had a few issues with it, mainly the girl playing silk spectre, she was a terrible actress. some of the songs were kinda stupid in the context they were used for most notably the leonard cohen song used for the sex scene in archie, i mean i like leonard cohen but with a chorus of hallelujah! during successful coitus after the previous attempt was marred by erectile dysfunction it played out more like a silly viagra commercial than the footnote to the underlying sexuality of being a masked avenger.

i felt the guy who played rorschach did a pretty good job, would have preferred if they focused more on his dialect but whatever i liked him. i really missed alot of the side stuff in the book which i felt was really important, the psychologists mental health deteriorating, the news vendor and the kid, the lesbians, the hollis mason murder, which i thought was incredibly important.

i dunno i liked the movie, i thought it was entertaining, didn't feel like nearly 3 hours, but it just lacked alot of what made the book great and i feel the movie was only salvaged by what it got right from the source material. i think it needed to be an indie film by a more competent director with better actors and a better screenplay. overall i'd reccomend it only to people who have read the book.

That was pretty good but to be honest I expect better from something accompanying a big blockbuster of a film. You'd think they'd have a bigger budget or maybe they did and just did a half arsed job of it anyway.

I felt the same way about the animated stuff that came out with the Dark Knight. I'd be happy to make a short animation about Batman at a higher quality than most of them even if I wasn't getting payed. People are lazy fuck.

More accurate is they're not given enough time to make the pieces, so in the end they're rushed.

Same here. I heard a lot of mixed reviews regarding it, and was a little hesitant to go see it, but I finally saw it a couple days ago and was impressed. I loved the way they worked all the little bits of history into the opening credits.

The one thing that really bothered me was at the end. In the movie, Adrian doesn't seek Dr. Manhattan's opinion over whether or not he'd done the right thing. In the novel, that really helped to make Adrian more "human" for me. I wish they'd left that part in.   But other than that, I enjoyed it.
