Title: Flash avatars
Post by: Sinister Clock on March 14, 2009, 03:28:22 PM
We have flash everywhere else, why not avatars? That would be cool as fuck, and be smaller sizes. Just think, you could have some dude on their which blinks at random moments or sighs every so often. It'd be like your avatar dude is trapped in the avatar.

Also image optomization ruins avatars.

won't dozens of flash files on a page slow the forums down a great deal? When you go to sites with lots of flash ads it certainly does.

I'd be against this, as much as I do love swf. Having a ton of them in one window would really do bad things to someones computer, and not to mention the AS people could code into it.

or music with autostart in your avatar

Swf avatars would cause the site to be slow and would be too big anyway, you can just put them in your sig if you want to have a swf. anyway, If you wan't an animated avatar anyway you can just use a gif.

The idea is neat, but too far ahead. Like what Crust said.

I don't see the difference between flash avatars and flash signatures. Why would flash avatars suddenly slow down everything yet we have much bigger flash signatures EVERYWHERE?

Also the autostart sound idea argument is stupid because you can do that in signatures also.

We could always just have rules concerning them like no sounds or complex actionscript or large amount of filters/they all have to be set to "low".

The flash signatures do slow it down, so they will certainly slow everything down when you use them as avatars.

But then what's the difference between allowing flash sigs and allowing flash avatars? Especially since avatars would probably be much less slowing downness since most sigs have full movies going on in them whereas a flash avatar would just be a dude standing around doing shit like my avatar there <<<< but in flash so it'd look slightly better and the loops wouldn't be as annoying.

Yes you can.

The only difference I see between flash avatars and signatures is that you can set a signature to display only once per page, which keeps the slowness of flash in check. Flash avatars would be cool but speed is still an issue for me. A system where you can choose whether to have flash avatars display or not would be swell, though.

I'm willing to live the lag, though, if this actually happens.

you can but why should you add a preloader to a avatar

So my computer doesn't lag like fuck.

You don't even need a bar or button, you can just have it start with a blank frame and play when loaded.

It would just bog the site down way too much.

The problem here is that an avatar is supposed to be a way to quickly recognize someone, and I'm just not going to click every single flash avatar.

Preloaders don't require a play button. It can go to the flash as soon as it is done loading.

How about you give away flash avatars for people who have submitted a significant amount of clock movies?

sounds reasonable

an option to turn off flash avatars in the user CP would help a lot, too, for everyone with lousy computers and such.

Probably it should be you have to PM a mod to get a flash avatar like you have to now to get a big avatar then they could say "no fuck you sorry lol" if it was really laggy or annoying or whatever.

Nah it would be far to gay. Besides the drop down menu's fall behind an swf. for some reason so that would be mucho inconveniento

This.

Although I don't mind if people want to just have the flash avatar or just the flash sig, but both at the same time isn't feasible.
