Title: Some shirt design reject
Post by: TequilaClock on April 23, 2009, 04:55:45 PM
So uhh I offered myself to design the free shirt the school prints for the grads but uhh they rejected it for not resembling any significance at all to the generation. It especially sucks how I am all surrounded by chavs and hardcore christians so it is hard to make it representative without making me throw up. It will be hard.

So anyway I felt like sharing this so yeah.

that's pretty awesome right there. I don't like the color on the rings but everything else is good. I would wear this shirt.

The discrepancy in the lines on the left-most ring is the only thing that troubles me.

Other than that,.

Ah I didn't notice that. Weird, all the circles are one symbol, I should check that.

Either way thanks guys.

EDIT: Actually, all the skinny rings have the outer circle too thin, fixing that.

Whale lines look a bit bulky and out of place compared to the rest of it. It's a pretty awesome design you got working there.

the only thing i find wrong with it is how much you go from using thick lines to thin lines. besides that,  flying whales

It's actually not THAT good. The guy riding the whale is pretty bad, I'd redo him. Also, the style you are going for is ok at times, but this looks like you've tried to much to reproduce it. The lines on the cloud are way too thick. Also the circles would look better with no lines imho.

Also make all the brush lines the same thickness. Otherwise it looks like you've just copied and pasted the whale lots and free transformed him smaller.

Convert the lines to fills in the ring symbol to make the width of the lines change with the size of the rings.

Thicken the lines on the man, so that it's not so obvious that you drew it large and shrank it.

The hand holding the sword has some problems, particularly with the thumb orientation/length and the aligned knuckles (though that can be excused as stylization). Grab a thick-handled object and turn your hand around so that it's up near your chin, with the back of your hand facing the other side of your body.

On the other hand, a line from the body overlaps the thumb. As well, the lowest fold of the skin from the bending of the digits should more evenly between the finger segments. If you look at your fingers while you bend the digits, you'll see that while the bend at the knuckles creates a fold that extends straight from the palm towards the major knuckle, the folds from digit to digit are along the wrinkles, extending towards the minor knuckles.

The first image has marked the problem areas of the sword hand, the other two are before and after corrections to the off-hand.

Apart from the fact that design is awesome and I'd totally wear that, they're still right in rejecting it. If you make a design for a school's t-shirt, the character needs to look a lot more like society's perfect teenager and the whales should probably be stamped with your school's logo.

Are you still allowed to try again? If you can, you should totally work this out to something they like.

I mean, flying whales. Fuck.

Oh, and try to 'streamline' it a bit. You know, lines the same thickness, no mixing of brush and line tools in different objects (diagonal lines on the whales are brushed, on the clouds it looks like line tool).

I'm just suggesting, don't do it if you don't agree!

its lovely

shame though if you put more effort into the whale they well wouldve accepted the shirt.

by that i mean make the lines on the whales smoother and curve the lines behind the whales mouth and youll have yourself a fine drawing
