God I love Moviebob
Already saw it earlier
I can understand the pigmies as it is an outbreak in fucking Africa, but the alternate costume... damn.
I have wondered multiple times why blaack people HAVE to be gangstas all the time, its time for a little change
The guy brings up some very good points about racism in that movie I hadn't considered. The whole part about white characters having the back story and crazy shit to identify them while the black guy is just black is something I never noticed before, but, thinking about it now, is totally true from the stuff I've seen.
Does the guy think there's no such thing as tribal people in Africa anymore? There are still tribes that actually dress like that and use that level of technology.
Watch the Namibia episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations if you don't believe me.
He brings up some good points but his narrative style and word choice irritates the shit out of me for some reason.
does not know what tabula rasa refers to

This.
I really think he's off the mark with this, recall another game where you go around shooting only blacks. Look at the other RE games, one you're in a typically English mansion shooting white zombies, two in an American style city shooting white zombies - this kind of persecution pisses me off, he's trying to stir a point which isn't really there anymore.
The world we live in today is a place where anyone who is honestly racist is looked upon as a moron and an idiot - racism is no longer a threat to our social structure, there are only small-minded idiots left, this doesn't affect anyone else.

Because the only blacks portrayed in the media are thugs, as they make the news the most often. Such as rappers and real gangsters. They do it to themselves.

Luke Cage doesnt deserve a costume, hes a hack.
So it's an 11 minutes presentation for saying put black guys in games.

No, it's saying put black characters in games, not cut-outs
Everything you say about black people is racist.

proper black people, not just what white people think black people are like.
this is actually a pretty common problem in writing.
it's difficult to write and find a voice for characters outside of one's comfort zone, and "outside of one's comfort zone" is where other ethnicities invariably lie- along with other genders, nationalities, age groups, and cultural spheres, amongst other things. that's why newgrounds is saturated with videos about
white male teenagers hanging out together, about a third of stephen king's protagonists are middle-aged, white, male, prolific horror writers who love their families, and there are no white characters in movies like Friday.
most writers, and I speak with broad strokes deliberately here, aren't good or worldly enough to overcome this problem, but there's an easy workaround, and I don't know why videogame developers (excepting maybe bioware) haven't figured them out.
comic books caught on to it a while ago and devised clever solution #1: hire minorities to write minorities. (chriscross wrote jason rusch, gail simone wrote birds of prey, and alan heinberg wrote young avengers.)
when kevin smith wrote chasing amy he used clever solution #2: he ran it by a lesbian friend for revision.
and that's really all it takes.
I guess we can't expect development teams that are japanese by nationality to know a whole lot of black guys, and honestly the fact that cole train doesn't give a fuck is what everybody likes about him, but it probably wouldn't kill the industry to see a couple more characters like Eli Vance, Jade from Beyond Good & Evil, or CJ from San Andreas.
He briefly mentions the people who make the games at the end, but didn't discuss how they are another major influence on the characters. Not only is the market predominately white (and lets face it, if a majority of the population is of some ethnicity, that will be the normal ethnicity of the culture, you wouldn't make 50-50 ethnically diverse media for an 80-20 population distribution) and thus the demand is mostly for an identical ethnic character, but the people who actually make the game, artists, designers, programmers, writers, will use characters that THEY perceive as the norm, which could out weigh corporate interests or the cultural and social norms of the market.
Since I'm white and grew up in a dominantly white society, I will probably create a default white character, anything else would probably either be pandering or some kind of race guilt. In America or Europe, even a black person (or other non-white) could likely also draw a default white person. But if all white people where some other X ethnicity, the same results would probably occur.
In the case of RE5, there isn't much room for ethnic diversity if they wanted to use this story line: Americans go to Africa. Americans of course are predominantly white, and people in Africa are, of course, dominantly black (except maybe South Africa). They could try a different locale, but look what they have used: Mansion (of a white guy), Raccoon City (white city USA), then they switched to some Mexican/Spanish setting. Whats next? Maybe Africa, since that doesn't seem to be used so often?
This brings me to another game set in Africa, Farcry 2. No racism uproar (to my knowledge). Yet I'm sure most of the characters were black, and you killed them, lots of them, like RE5. So I don't know if I'm missing something in the difference between killing people in RE5 and FC2, but it seems some games are just targeted for some reason, even if there is another game similar or perhaps worse.
Though there's a further question: How much of this is actually a problem? Cultural and social norms change from region, to country, to continents, even neighborhoods. I bet there are even LESS black people in China, and thus, a lack of black people in the media. Does that mean China needs to add more black people in media? I don't think so. The appearance of an ethnicity is generally proportional to the population of the region you are marketing too, along with the individuals developing the product.
There's a lot to talk about and I didn't really cover much, but that just some of my thoughts on the subject.
why didnt they just make the main character black ...
Quote from: poppa;1573353why didnt they just make the main character black ...
becuz we racialist
Quote from: poppa;1573353why didnt they just make the main character black ...
They would just have gangsta'd it or people would have sneaked a way in just to find a minor detail, call it racist and then people would fall for that bullshit.
Seriously if the main guy was black, everyone could have gone with "OMG HES A GANGSTA, NUT ALL BLACK GOYS R GANGSTA U RACIST" or "OMG IF THIS GAMES TOO HARD THEN IT MEANS U PLANNED IT 2 MAIK US WUTCH BLACK GOYS DIE ITHAR WAY U RACIST"
People are fuckers now and they will bitch about anyhting, and videogames are no wonder. I mean, Fox News bitched the hell of a stupid non-explicit sex scene on Mass Effect which all of their general audience doesn't know a damn shit of it.
Probably Capcom actually tried hard so people didn't moan so much about it but they slipped something on it.

Why do I always choose the black guy in a video game? Could anyone explain this to me? Is it because I like the underdog or just because I want to be black or something
