Title: A dying friend dedicated his life to solipsism
Post by: Solenoidclock on May 08, 2009, 12:01:04 PM
If you were in this situation, what would you do with their tombstone or obituary? Would you say, "well, I guess it was all for naught"? Also, he comes from a long line of solipsists. What do you say to his family? Do they believe they brought this upon themselves? Do they mourn?

For those of you who don't see what a bizarre thing this is, solipsism is the belief that nothing is known to exist outside of your own mind. Other minds cannot be proven, as can't the rest of the universe. Everything is seen as a construct of his own imagination.

He is my friend because I used to screw with him constantly and he concluded that I couldn't be from within his own mind because I confused him so much. He is really very interesting to talk to, and I'm sure he'd write a book if he believed in legacy.

He might not die, but I worry about it.

You only worry about it because you know that if he dies you cease to exist.

"M promised me I wouldn't have to write an obituary because everything would cease to exist once he died. I learned today that we are all actually a figment of his mother's imagination, meaning that his life and death are all at her consequence. I'd like to invite the mother of the deceased to say a few words."

I don't know, sometimes I think that when all life dies in some infinite amount of time nothing will exist as there will be nothing to observe it, but that's just me.

Of course, the concept of nothing wouldn't exist to, so then what?

Wasn't collective solipsism how they internally referred to totalitarianism in 1984?

Solipsism isn't untrue it's just a bit oversimplified. It takes the false dichotomy inherent in the general public's model of "me and not me" and shifts it slightly instead of removing it. In one way, it's more true, in another, less so.

I suggest your friend study Hinduism or Kabbalah.

That said, the universe doesn't end when you die, it ends when you wake. Or rather, when we wake.

Its all about state of mind. A solipsist could use their strange (and lazy) philosophy to their own advantage by using it to control their emotions and not be manipulated by the "negative" aspects of our universe (Because in the end its all just me.)

However because the philosophy is so lacking, it could be used in the opposite direction (I don't have to bother with others, as its all just me. I can hurt others, they're only there for me).

So I agree with albino. This philosophy could be used to understand a major aspect of the consciousness-phenomenon, however its so lacking; understandably it is most likely going to be misunderstood. Hinduism and Kabbalah do explain similar "realities" however their explanations are much more whole, and force the student to understand on a much higher level eliminating the "therefore nothing is real, nothing matters" logic.

Even if nothing is "real", especially if nothing is real, you're left with the way you feel about your actions, and generally socially positive actions feel good. On the other hand, a model involving an external reality greater than consciousness generally includes the idea of expiration of consciousness, so in the end your activities would be personally meaningless. Being assured of the impossibility of death is an unbelievable boon to the psyche, and having an understanding of the purpose behind other people makes it easier to love them, when you can remember. Solipsists seem to lack the second part to a degree. They suspect something important about the nature of individuals, but try to understand this using their old, now contextually meaningless, frame of reference. Such is the nature of awakening.
