I have a feeling there are fewer group projects and events because of a lack of (A) companionship and (B) communication amongst members...

I use IM programs yes, not with a lot of people though.. mostly Dwarfinator, Chicken, Asshat and that asshole Steve. Almost never about flash related stuff ..i do talk to Grey in real life but he hates you all and hope you all burn to death.

I IM with lots of clocks a lot yes (I use AIM only for clocks even, all my real life buds have msn), sometimes about animation, sometimes about stuff, depends on who I'm talking to.

That is one thing I remember from Co.uk.
Even though the forums were evil the Msn community was flourishing, people chatted away making plans and such: That is how anything was ever produced back then even though the overall Moral was lower.

I often have msn open on which i have a long long list of clocks, but i rarely speak to any of them. sometimes i have aim open (which i opened because of this thread) which i olny use for clocks, but i also dont really speak to anyone on there much. i spoke to gir a couple of times on msn recently

My understanding though is that people are not "lazy" but unmotivated, because there is no network of appreciation. If one has friends with which to get excited about their creations, that's the first step.

There is some truth in this. I was thinking about why I did flash, and the reason was simply for recognition, not by newgrounds, but by you guys, and I get the feeling nobody cares much.

the concept behind the clockcrew, despite being developed over the last 8 years, is completely dependant on a vague, obscure, insider mindset that doesn't lend itself that easily to anything broader

Newgrounds may be a dead end in terms of the types of people we get noticed by and the amount of people we reach, but if you see the clock crew just as something fun and not something that's trying to become widely recognized then it's something that won't ever die.

I think it's more important that you get excited about your animations than what your friends think. If you get excited you will be motivated to animate, if your friends get excited nothing will happen.

Honestly, I don't see the hype to create flash. I would rather see continuous creativity and artistic growth than a series of half-assed animations.

Yes Tri and Caddy and Biggs too can be assholes sometimes but you get assholes in pretty much every chat and there are still plenty of fun convos if you chill for a while! Sitting there and bitching about the chat being empty is contributing to the problem, when joining and chilling out for a while could be solving it instead.
And you don't have to use the default built-in chat client, you can download a client like Chatzilla or mIRC instead, which will give you a lot more functionality.

I'll instant message with whoever contacts me whenever I'm online, unless I tell you otherwise (sometimes I'm only on to talk to my brother or close friends). AIM is cableshaft.
Same with Skype, if I'm on. I choose to go on that less often though.
I talk to Snake, Roman, and FloppyDisk pretty often.
I've been a bit too self involved lately to collaborate, but I'm trying to change that attitude, especially now that I have more free time again.
I never think to go to the chat room unless specifically reminded about it, like you just did.
