The next videogame console generation is likely to start in the next 2 years. Whoever releases something new first is going to be followed quickly by the other big two. At the very least nintendo is going to have something in 2011 because the last 3 consoles have been 5 years apart.
Anyway, I think we're close enough to the date now to make some unbased predictions and random speculation that has a chance of being somewhat accurate.
I assume that every console is going to have some sort of motion tracking standard (Project Natal, sony motion control, maybe some crazy ass gloves from nintendo or something), with a lot of support from developers. The new theme of the generation is going to virtual reality and simulation. Once again Nintendo is going to have the worst graphics and be the cheapest. Sony is going to steal everybody elses unique ideas. Game makers are going to spend even LESS time on good stories and game mechanics because they're going to spend all their time on graphics and getting the motion controls to work.
It'll be a grand time to be a casual.

Every past generation has assumed that virtual reality would be the future and it never is.
Can the graphics really get much better? Honestly i really think that Sony and Microsoft have kinda backed themselves into a corner on this one/ Nintendo, even considering the fact that they are a cheaper console will easily be able to use current tech in there future consoles and have it look just as good.
also: games where better before everyone became amazed with how real everything looked.
I predict more sequels to games that have been going on since the nes.

But whatevs, when motion control becomes the next big thing, I'll still play the games.
Nintendo will prevail next generation, because graphics right now are pretty damned impressive. If Nintendo's next console has PS3 level graphics, or possibly less, they'll still have the cheapest console out of the three as well as the gimmicks.
I still think xbox has OK graphics.
Well, I think that graphics can't get much(if at all)better. Unless you wanna make an interactive movie or something.
About gameplay, VR(even if in a more basic level) would be interesting, let's see how that works...however, we must not be too expectant about it, I mean look at the Wii. When I heard about "motion-sensing controllers" I thought of something completely different.
On a slightly related note, the Wii is suited for games that actually require arm motion. I dunno, it seems superfulous to me to make RPGs or Platformers for the Wii since these games can be played in a much better and fun way in the old way: pressing buttons and moving analog sticks.
I only hope videogaming doesn't get cornered by a graphical limit someday. I really can't imagine geting much closer to reality now, maybe Crysis and that stuff, but we are very close to that edge.
Maybe we will find better gimmicks like effective virtual reality or just going back to the good old analogs and buttons to have a good game too.
Every console will be designed for casual gamers and there won't be any controllers with buttons anymore, so hurray for PC-gaming?
I predict I won't buy any of them. Ever since I got my N64 (My first console) gaming has been going downhill. The 360 was a joke with all of its shitty hardware. All I have now are Blizzard and practically infallible Valve, both of which primarily make games for PC.

PC gaming is going to be shit because everyone who plays pc games these days just steals the shit so no one wants to make PC games. All the big pc franchises are being sent to console because businesses want to make money and thats how you do it.
