Title: Why do people even bother?
Post by: NintendrCkolc on July 18, 2009, 01:44:34 PM
Remember Chrono Resurrection (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YELRuYNBRDk)?

Well it looks like Star Fox is getting the same treatment. (http://kotaku.com/5317359/if-nintendo-wont-make-a-hd-starfox-these-guys-will) And it looks pretty orgasmic to boot.

Too bad we'll never get to play it. Why would the idiots who are making this announce it before its even completed? They're just asking for a cease and desist. It seems like any and all fan made projects always get canceled before they ever see the light of day. Wouldn't it be a better idea to finish the shit and release it before you go around announcing the project?

even if they DON'T get a cease and desist I'm sure we can expect it around the same time as black mesa source. mother 3 translation is the only fan project that was ever finished

they announce it because that is what drives the creators to go through with it: fan enthousiasm.

I don't see how publishers have any right whatsoever to sue over something that is free. Unless these home game makers were planning on selling the game that is.

Copyright infringement is copyright infringement.

Even if these people give it out for free, its going to be hosted on a site, and if that site has ad generated income, then the increased hits from releasing the project are tantamount to income garnished from the infringement.

The concept of copyrights are there to ensure income derived from properties can't be generated by people outside the owners of the copyrighted material or people the copyright owners have licensed to use their material. While I believe copyrights should not be as long as Disney has made them and continues to elongate them, I don't believe Star Fox or most any mainstream videogame franchise has been around long enough to outlive their copyright status.

I like how suiting your name is to this post.
But I must say this isn't too bad of a case of using other peoples ideas, they've basically been waiting on a game and decide to make it themselves.
At least someone is getting something done. It would be nice to see them use the experience of this project and develop their own proper game. Even if it had some similarities to Star Fox it would still be nice to see.

See, this is what they do...

Change the name to StarTigers and make it a "PARODY" of Star Fox. You can basically do anything you want if you are able to work under the parody law.

They would still be stealing character likenesses.

It's better than the alternative.

Edit: Oh I came here through New Posts, I didn't realize this was in Console & Gaming and thought it was a general existential question.
On Topic: Because they want to know if people will want what they are doing. Otherwise, what's the point?
