Title: AT&T Blocks 4chan?

In my opinion, if it's true, then good riddance. They'll bitch and moan, spew out another couple thousand memes, and hold gay protests in their fucking V for Vendetta masks outside of AT&T offices. And that's all that'll happen.

In America this technically breaks the first amendment, does it not?

Way to read your own article

QuoteUPDATED 8: According to CentralGadget, 4chan is now UNBLOCKED by AT&T. AT&T says they were «following the practices of their policy department», but that they have restored network-wide access to all areas of 4chan. Shitstorm averted? Also, according to CentralGadget, 4chan is currently down «due to a large DDOS attack, affecting most of 4chan’s servers.» This appears unrelated to the AT&T blockade, but may have been triggered by the high-profile attention that 4chan has received during the past 24 hours.

Fuck you guys. Internet censorship is bad anywhere. Also America doesn't own the internet but I'm pretty sure AT&T is based in America, the internet isn't some lawless wasteland you know.

But anyway, the reason they blocked them was because their customers were DDOSing 4chan and using a shit load of bandwidth, so instead of limiting the access to the DDOSers they block 4chan?

As I understand it a DDoS is orchestrated from a botnet meaning one person fires up a bunch of infected computers owned by your average less-than computer savvy person that somehow downloaded a trojan or virus or whatever, which allows the hacker remote access to their computer. Blocking 4chan entirely would seem to be the easiest solution in this case if you can't really narrow down any profile, basically anyone dumb enough to download suspicious material on the internet.

edit: note I'm not condoning using tactics like blocking an entire website for this reason I'm just giving what I think AT&T's reasoning behind this is.

Yeah, somehow I don't think censoring the Internet is a good thing.  It opens up more possibilities.  It's not good in any way.
At least they unblocked it.

It's not 4chan. It's other people who download trojans who are used by people who hate 4chan to DDOS it.

So am I right in assuming most of you guys don't care about Net Neutrality at all? If so I am very ashamed.

Either way AT&T did not block img.4chan.org as a means of censorship, but as a security measure. Albeit it was a hasty and not well thought out, I'd like to think they were going to remove the block after the DDOSing stopped, or they found a better solution. They failed to realize the 4chan user base would overreact to something like this.

Net Neutrality's important, but it can't last forever. In Australia (MY HOEM) the government's currently developing a mandatory internet filter that will block all X and R rated material. It doesn't matter if you're an adult and you are legally allowed to look at pronz, because a poor child could type 'tits' in google on your machine and be scarred for life.

Of course there's no way that this will be put into effect, seeing as literally no one in parliament besides the ALP supports the idea. Thank you Kevin Rudd, for wasting millions of tax dollars in a failed attempt to limit our freedom.

As older politicians leave and make way for newer politicians who are more knowledgeable about that strange fad called The Internets, Net Neutrality stands a better chance as they will (I hope) try to work on ways to make things better for it rather than try and get rid of it.
I don't know if, when newspapers die out, that will help with Net Neutrality or hurt it, though.

/b/ isn't the only board on 4chan. It is only the worst, most popular, and as a result loudest board. 4chan still has many quality boards when you ignore /b/.

Although I can see how it would be hard to ignore part of a site you've never been on except to find proof for your preconceived notions.

I'm pretty sure that wouldn't matter if the government couldn't enforce the law because they stayed out of the internet.

EDIT: In the end, being arrested for going to a website is pretty much the same thing as just blocking the website.

They don't arrest people for visiting those cp websites as much as they arrest them for downloading it. I would say it is less censoring the internet and more arresting people that help create a market for child porn by owning the pictures.

There was a reason behind it blocking 4chan.
Seeing how no other site gets DDoS'd as often as 4chan, there is no room for AT&T to go Internet Nazi and start blocking random sites.
