Considering this was made using garageband, it's pretty impressive. I remember trying to mash something together using the loops provided and it was just a mess.

I only started using the loops tonight so I've still got a lot to learn. I do like garageband though, I do all of my voice acting on it and it does pretty good at getting rid of background noise. Have you found anything better for loops on Mac?

I find Audacity does a better job at getting rid of background noise while recording voices. Aside from that, I'm not that much into music production so I wouldn't know any good programs. I just got curious as to how things work.

You should try out a tracker! MilkyTracker is what I use. It takes a little while to figure out how to use it, but after that it's a fine sequencer, and you can use any audio sample with one. You should consult Wobbuffet or myself if you want a crash course.
As for making the samples, Audacity is prime, unless you're willing to write a program for audio synthesis. Some techniques:
Record some shit, play with it, see how you can make it sound
Use the built-in frequency generator
-LFO effects are pretty self-explanatory. Pick sub-audible frequencies and mix them with audible ones
-Beats are created by the difference of two frequencies. A 400Hz tone mixed with a 404Hz tone will have a 4 beats-per-second pulse.
-Chords are just combinations of frequencies
-Add quieter and quieter multiples of the base frequency for harmonic depth
-Cut out a region of the harmonics for a hollow sound, good for drums
-Use aperiodic harmonics for drums, that is ones that are mutually irrational. So if you have a drum tuned to 150Hz make it's harmonics 150*piHz, 150*pi*piHz, and so on, instead of 150*1.25Hz, 150*1.25*1.25Hz, and so on (the approximate frequency ratio between a note and it's major third)
If you zoom in enough to see the dots on the waveform, those are the samples, and if you change to the pencil tool you an actually just draw a sound. Try generating an audible note for just one period (as long as a second divided by it's frequency), drawing some random pattern over it, and listening to it on loop (hold down shift while hitting play).
Yeah I thought of posting about MilkyTracker, but that involves actually making your own samples and putting them together rather than having a program loaded with samples and going on from there. I would definitely agree with loki if you're looking to actually get into making your own original music.
I got MilkyTracker when trying to make 8bit music, but it's really good for anything. It looks complicated when you first open it up, but it's really simple. I prefer using this program over anything else, and I'm a complete novice at music making.
