Title: Batman: Arkham Asylum
Post by: ToadClock on August 20, 2009, 10:36:15 PM
After only playing the demo, I declare this Game of the Year.

It's Splinter Cell mixed with Assassin's Creed but exponentially superior to both.

I'm having a fangasm over this game. They got everything right about Batman. With the style of the 90s animated series and Frank Miller's story and inspiration from the Arkham Asylum graphic novel, it's everything a fanboy could hope for.
They even got Mark Hamil and Kevin Conroy for the voicing.

My mind is blown. This is the most awesome game I've played in forever. I can't even write in proper English right now. I'm having a stroke here. Wow. Just wow.

At first I thought it just looked cool. But now that you mention the voices, damn!

And the amazing thing is mark hamil has managed to make his interpretation of the joker sound even better then before. I especially liked the backround info and original artwork for each charachter you meet in the game.

Its gonna be this years Bioshock and I cant fucking wait!

Is it just those two or are all the voice actors going to reprise their rolls?

I was actually really loathing this game, the gameplay videos made it look like a shitty button-masher, but the demo was great.

Actors from the series who play Batman, Joker, Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, Two-Face, Alfred, Poison Ivy and Clayface are all reprising their roles. Not sure about the rest.

What I didn't know, however, is that Ron Perlman played Clayface in the series. Holy fuck. He is also playing Bane in this game.

Also, it would be pretty apparent that I am really excited for this game. I think I've run through the demo seven times at this point, haha.

Please tell me it's the kind of game children wouldn't enjoy, and that it requires patience and thought to play.

If it is, i'm getting my hands on it no matter what, i enjoy games i can play requiring tactical thoughts but still have decent action.

It would probably be best just to play the demo and judge for yourself. Personally I thought it had a good mix of tactics and bashing brains out.

I'm less excited for this than a lot of you, but I'm definitely looking forward to it. It looks like the best action game released in a while.

I agree. Like when you go into that large, open room with five guys walking around. How many ways can you take them out? You can glide down from above and kick them, string them up to a gargoyle, hide in the grates in the floor and pop out, drop through the glass ceiling on top of them, sneak up from a ledge and bash their head against it, etc. They really seem to give you a lot of angles to approach situations from. I am curious to see how they progress with the detective work, though, since the demo kind of holds your hand through it.

When I first played through, I got overexcited and ran into the midst of some inmates, intending to beat the hell out of their demon faces.
Took about two or three shots and Batman was down. His body armor helps him withstand some of it, but he's still human.
If you don't think in this game, you'll die.

That set of rooms in the middle, with the offices? Jump on it and stand on the glass. When one of the guys walks under you, it'll prompt you with the option of a take down.

Once I found you could lower yourself upside down from rafters and grab enemies from behind and above, I never stopped.

Also: I knew this game meant serious business when psychopaths started strapping guards to electric chairs or mercilessly filling them with bullets execution style for the fun of it.

Haha, yeah, my favorite thing to do is string the guys up from the gargoyles. I do that to them one at a time until the other guys get scared and start firing at the sound of the boiler or just randomly at nothing. It's really cool that you can use fear to effect them like that.

What I meant by "story" was the general background and characters of Frank Miller (poor wording on my part). Obviously the game is based on Morrison's plot.

Hmm. He is listed as a voice actor, but from all of my research it doesn't look like he's in the game very much, if at all in person. He is listed as escaped, so that just might mean he is going to be in the DLC or sequel.

I did find an awesome picture of the Scarecrow, though, which I had not seen before.

It's fun to string a guy up, glide kick someone if you have to so everybody comes over to the gargoyle, grapple to another gargoyle and hit the rope with a batarang so the guy falls right in the middle of the crowd of people.

It's also fun trying to take everyone out with just normal attacks and no takedowns. Not very easy, but fun.

Hot damn, I didn't even think about hitting the rope with a Batarang. Going to try this now, hehe.

Yeah, I normally buy games for the 360, but I might get this for the PS3. Not just because of the Joker thing, but you also get a big Batcave for PS Home. Not that I ever use it. But if I did, I would have the fucking Batcave. Hells yes.

So I just played this for about 4 straight hours...  Scare Crow was one of the best boss fights (albeit a bit too simple) ive seen all year. This game also reeks of atmosphere and the gameplay is top notch.. Its a great mix of stealth, beat em-up and in some ways its reminding me alot of Metroid.

I dont want it to end ever.

Post by: PropagandaClock on October 19, 2009, 05:34:21 PM
So I got it for PC and it's quite good, the combat is flowing, the levels are ok.

I find the work with the Riddler more entertaining than the general game but the Joker is doing a great job at making the whole scenary come alive.

My only main complaint is that Batmaaaan can't kill anyone. I mean he can't even watch bad guys die but have to save them. Yeah I understand he is all about lawful good and justice but in all honesty they've cranked up the wickedness of all the enemy characters to the point that they're really dark and morbid; Joker talking to a worried wife about how he has beheaded her husband guard.
Surrounded by corpses of civilians and guards batman still goes around punching people and throwing batarangs as if they were plastic toys.

Once I even got to make a evil guy fall into poisonous gas in which Batman says "I can't let him die, I must save him." which even if it might be canon is extremely corny.
And it also ruins the gameplay in the sense that you can't use height/cliffs to your advantage because god forbid a crony would die so instead they hit an invisible wall when thrown at mortally challenging abysses. And explosive gell... yeah that won't cause any limbloss.
There isn’t much satisfaction in knowing you’re locking them up in the same comfortable asylum as always.

Still it's a good game and I like it. Sadly playing so much Silent Hill made the Scarecrow part look like child splay and all I can say about that section is "Warning huge fucking laserz."
But I love the surreal feel of his intermissions.

But playing it right now and having the thugs use worse and worse weapons I am really getting aggrivated that I can't just fling up a huge damned Batogun and bust some croonies.

Also Batmaaaaan is the biggest crybaby known to man.

EDIT:
No seriously I'm getting to hate Batmaaaan for being such a great guy to never break someones neck. When some of the guys you've already beaten up come back to haunt you (not to mention one with especially frustrating voice) I just hate batmaaaan.

EDIT2:
The stealth part without any checkpoints, that's just amazingly horrid design.
