Being a thanatophobic sciophobiac I've always been to much of a coward to play through most of the Silent Hill games (or I've just not had them available) except for the Fifth one which wasn't scary compared to the First which is the one I've played second most.

Anyway I am thinking of running them through and I was wondering if there is any special order and/or recommendations on which to start with :D
Not counting Fifth and the First I haven't really played the others to the degree I wish.

3 is the sequel to 1.

2 and 4 are relatively independent, and if you're going to get a SH game, I would recommend 2.

Two and three are best IMO, I would say four is also worth playing as well even though it gets a lot of shit compared to the other games.

2 + 3 Are the best. You'll enjoy 3 more if you know the story behind the first one.

Maybe a little obvious, but always make sure you play these games alone, with the lights off and volume up.

I find it funny you being thanatophobic because most of your work is grim and more or less related to death. I don't mean this as a mock :D

Thank you all for the feedback, been listening to the Silent Hill soundtrack for days now (which is suprisingly great) trying to aquire the odds and ends.

Also the newest on Wii makes me sad :(

Haha I take it as an compliment :D
Well phobia does not always have to be hysteric reaction, mine is that of calm dread for the inevitable.

It sure was swell! Well not really but if you ignore 50% of it it is not actually half a bad a movie but quite nice. I do love the Siren though.

Well I'm playing the Fourth at the moment, not really scary but then again people have said it isn't.
I do however love the story, the atmosphere and the way the music is interwoven, mainly the maintheme start sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMvOkUMPZ0g
First 30 seconds are heavenly.

However I found a glitch in the graphics at one place (and one place only) but it got me wondering, is there a general lack of music in this game? I hardly ever hear it unless it's a special scene or when fighting monsters. I guess the silence speaks louder than words eh.

Only problems so far is the fact that I'm a melee junkie in every game ever so I have 200 bullets that I don't ever use but I'm still plowing through with it with somewhat ease (godamn quick button wasted alot of health drinks though).
And I always dislike immortal enemies which is ironic since this game is littered with them.

Yeah, the ghosts are why I never finished 4. 2 is light on combat, but like I said, its story is excellent.

qft

also, 2 has pyramid head so 2 is <3
3's combat system is better but is underused and the bosses are kinda easy/boring

tip: use melee unless it's a boss fight, ammo is sparse and enemies take a fuckload of shots to kill usually, so it's best to not waste ammo, especially in 3.

I recently bought the special edition case version of Silent Hill 2, I haven't actually started it yet though (never played any silent hill games). I'm planning on breaking it out tomorrow night and playing in a dark room like Poisonshroom mentioned, should be good!

Finished Silent Hill 4 The room, Escape ending.

485 enemies killed, bring the smackdown!
Although I only got a rating of 68 due to playtime and amount of saves... but I've always been a save paranoia and I love to explore so what do you expect from the playtime meh.
52/52 memos, 0 continues. (Although I died once).

All in all I really enjoyed it in a sense, the fighting was rugged but most enjoyable (reminds me of Deadspace nazi stomp on babeh), the story was solid albeit abit over rehearsed at the end when they told you the outline of Walters madness for the fourth time. However I am most impressed that they managed to make Eleein not seem like a pain in the arse... ofcourse you should be alone in a Silent Hill game but she never felt to close nor like a burden.

8/10 considering its an old game aswell.

Silent Hill 3 next :D

Wow Silent Hill 3 is quite different from Silent Hill 4, it really reminds me of oldschool horror games with hard puzzles because christ I choose "Riddle level; Hard" And the Shakespear riddle at the start really took me some time to figure out.

The combat is nice aswell, much more emphasis on fleeing or just overall rape by numbers, but it's nice aswell because it has some deph and you can overcome things with tactic... and sometimes you cant but you dont feel like a coward running away.

Also it's overall more scary and I'm enjoying it in a twisted way

Yeah I played them all out of order: 2>3>1>4(until I realized it was shit)

I'd say play 2 first because its way cooler if you don't know what Silent Hill is actually about and try and come up with your own conclusions. It is also the scariest one, followed by one, with three being the least scary of the first three. SH one surprised me with how disturbing it was for a PS1 game.

But yeah if you want silent hill you are talking to the right guy because SH2 is my top favorite game of all time.

You'll come to find that SH2 is not only a great game. It's the greatest game.

A lot of people might disagree with that level of adoration, but it's a fucking piece of art and some parts of it are beautiful enough to make you cry. It's also deep as Hell and I have fond memories of digging through the plot on forums and discovering all the little nuggets. It's also the scariest thing I've ever played.

SH3 leaves something to be desired... It's plot is derived from the first game, and after the subtle grace of the first two characters Heather is downright annoying with her teenaged-girl commentary on everything. However, it's still scary. But while SH2 built scariness from a sense of quiet, steadily increasing dread and tension that often never gets released, SH3 is all about making you panic. You enter a room and are met with the loudest, scariest shit and it'll make you want to just turn around and leave immediately.

SH1 is also quite good, though not as emotionally involved as 2. 4 had a nice, solid little plot, but the gameplay (even for a SH game) could become mind-numbing.

Also, not to toot SH2 way too much, but it also has in my humble opinion the best music of the series.

I got Silent Hill quite some time ag because I was hearing all these good thing about it and shit.
So I was happy and excited to play it but it turned out to be a rather regular game, rather it was kind of boring really.

The gameplay was bad and the graphics weren't particularly good either, but a lot of people say that the thing what made the game good was the storyline and frankly I couldn't find this fantastic storyline, but even then if all a game has to go for is a storyline, then you should try a book or a movie.

I dunno' about that... Videogames tell stories in different ways than other mediums. Shadow of the Colossus wouldn't work as a book or movie, but as a game it's brilliant.

Also, for what it was I think the original Silent Hill had some pretty good graphics. Plus the music was great, and if you go back to what it was up against with Resident Evil 2, the gameplay was much improved in my opinion (what with an instant turn-around button, controllable camera and strafe option).

I started on that sh2 like I mentioned earlier, very neat game so far. Haven't gotten far at all yet, but the mixture of the wonderful atmosphere, interesting puzzles and combat in between is quite nice. Right now I'm stuck in that room with the clock in the woodside apartment.

Oh man, Oh boy !

I just finished Silent Hill 3.

9-9.5/10 (for a survival horror game)
One of the higher scores I've ever given a game.
Mind you this is not an objective score but how I percieve the game and overall feeling, from a strict critique point of view it would be slightly less but still very high.

One of the main things is how godamn amazed I am that it is over 6 years old and still better than just about most games that come out nowdays, the graphics, the gameplay, the puzzles and most of godamn all: Immersion.
Dead Space is one of the best looking games I've ever played but they really fail at putting out Goo and alien envoirments at good places, Silent Hill 3 manages so much more with so extremely much less.
Valtiel was also epic.
(https://clockcrew.net/talk/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv237%2FXxPitiful_AnonymousxX%2Fvaltielisworking2yt.gif&hash=595214db44d83b23d3c6a793031029feb33550a2)

The combat was kind of like the Fourth game but just much better, more tactic, more running around, switching between weapons was actually neccery and with the right idea just about any enemy (exluding pendelums) were killable without getting damaged.
But the monsters evolved and got better/stronger attacks which also added to the experience aswell as rooms mixing multiple enemies for really mindrape scenarios.

Puzzles were borderline insane (I played on Hard) but most enjoyable.
Environments were awesome, Story was good; Not expecting much.
And indeed Heather was abit teenage sassy at times but even though I am usually the first to cry foul I couldn't find myself caring about it... Mostly just questioning the one who made her script.
But for every wrong there was so much right (the haunted mansion etc.) so overall even the "bad" voiceacting felt great.

Got 7.3 rating, max on melee kills and items... strangely enough I'm punished for only having killed 17 monsters with firearms (you gain more score from the more you kill). Got 0 from saves (187 saves :D)
What amazes me is that I only had 188 kills, now I equipted Perfume and killed just about every enemy in the entire game exluding some pendelums because they're godamn pain in the arses. In SH4 I had over 450 kills but it felt much much less compared to this game, guess the combat was just much better in this.

Lastly I feel sad when the further back in time I go the better games turn out to be.
Casual gamers are ruining the market, polarizing it forcing game developers to make more accessible games which kills any hint of originality/soul and instead gives cashcows like Resident Evil or every Wii game ever.

Now, onwards to Silent Hill 2.

I always thought 3 punished you in some way for the more monsters you killed? Like you would have less time to activate the final boss sequence.

I better see a 10.5/10 at least for silent hill 2 with that kinda score.

Hmmm you mean when forced to take the red pill ? I don't know, I had alot of time to run around and inspect things, shame what happend to Vincet.

However if you replay it you're punished if you kill to much etc. with the "bad" ending in which you find Douglas stabbed to death and yourself holding the dagger with hands covered in blood "Leading the way to paradise with stained hands."

The SH game I've played to conclusion was Silent Hill 5.  It was pretty good because of how surreal it was, and also how it's never conclusive.

The only other one I've played was number 2, and I never got into it.  All I did at the start was run around and get lost, but I didn't devote a lot of time to the game.  In the future I might pick up a ps2 and play the other silent hill games.  Maybe give 2 another chance...who knows.

The fifth isn't so much a Silent Hill game as just an action game with a hint of Silent Hill lore but only the very very bad parts of the lore.

I didn't I still found it to be lacking though, it's scary the first 1½ rooms untill you notice spamming attack works against 90% of the monsters in game and the fact that you end up killing more humans than monsters should turn of any real horror fan

Not to say it's a horrible game, I love Dead Space even though it aint scary at all

You should definitely give it another chance.

SH2 builds its horror really slowly. There'll be moments where you're walking down hallways that stretch for forever, and it'll start to just make you anxious for it to end. One of the things I love about it is that it doesn't play like a video game. The environments feel like real places. In the beginning, when you're slowly making your way into the town through the woods, you don't just walk a 10' trail and you're there, it actually makes you wander a bit. It expects you to maneuver actual distances (something SH3 didn't do, and it perturbed me somewhat). But that's just justification of the things you didn't like about it; besides all that, once you get into it there's some amazing stuff to be found.

So I finished Silent Hill 2
And I don't know if its because I'm to much of a gamer but I had way to much stuff on me during the entire game.
It had a better overall story than any other game and the most sympathetical main character but I find Silent Hill 3 to be an overall better gaming experience. I don't know why but SH2 just didn't manage to creep me out as much... though I blame this on the fact that I played all the other Silent Hills before it so I had built up quite the tolerance.

Pyramid Head is awesome, the music was better but 3rd had much more noise when monsters were there making it more panicing.

Still a great game and once again I am saddend at how modern gaming has just turned for the worse.

Game was damn tense and damn fine (and holy shit confusing at times, which really kinda scared me for some reason because of how confusing it got).
I got the worst ending.

They do so much so well with music in SH2, which sucks for me cause I was sensitive to every errant noise they threw at me. I could only last for an hour or two at best before throwing in the towel for that session.
